This is a truly immersive experience that makes the best use of every element of filmmaking, and it all comes together to create a uniquely chilling horror.

Lesser-known horror films continue to inspire me. Just a few minutes ago, I watched a movie titled An Eye for an Eye, which also goes by Night Terror. Both titles work, but the first one feels closer to the spirit of the film. What we have here, as I see it, is a psychological horror with elements of Southern Gothic, best described as a hallucination — or a nightmare. A young woman named Anna, after a personal tragedy, goes to live with a relative in a rural area. The countryside is known not only for its beautiful views, fresh air, and aggressive mosquitoes, but also for a local legend about the Sandman, a spirit said to punish acts of injustice. Unfortunately, the Sandman’s influence reaches Anna as well. Why? The answer is already embedded in the title itself: “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth, an ear for an ear.” If you’ve done something wrong, be prepared for the local spirit to come after you. As for its methods and its backstory, those are best discovered on your own. What I want to highlight is the film’s oppressive atmosphere, built patiently and deliberately. Minute by minute — through a soundtrack that feels like shifting quicksand and visuals that evoke nightmares and hallucinations — I found myself sinking into a state somewhere between sleep and waking. I didn’t always know what to expect, and I wasn’t always comfortable surrendering to the images created by the filmmaking team. This is a solid piece of work that relies not on jump scares, but on a carefully constructed mood. Together with Anna, the viewer moves from one nightmare to the next, confronting a central question: how can a person resist the spiral of violence? And if violence is one of the elements of a nightmare, is it possible to wake up from it and become more civilized — so that chthonic spirits and a disturbed conscience no longer torment you? For me, both the story and the atmosphere came together into a cohesive experience, one capable of knocking you off balance for several hours. For that, I’d like to thank this film, which I experienced almost as a lucid dream. It was an engaging and, at times, frustrating journey.

Eye for an Eye (2025) Nightmare on Grandmother’s Home (12,351 – 24 Mar 2026 – Claudio Carvalho) In the 60’s, a black teenager loses her eyes while sleeping. In the present days, the teenager Anna Reeves (Whitney Peak) moves from the Brooklyn, NY, to the South of USA to the house of her blind grandmother May Roberts (S. Epatha Merkerson) after the death of her parents in a car accident. She immediately befriends Julie Cross (Laken Giles) and her boyfriend, the bad boy Shawn Heard (Finn Bennett) and spends her leisure time with them. She learns about the local legend of the Sandman, who punishes mean people. When Shawn bullies the boy Conner (Carson Minniear), he breaks his arm and Anna’s aunt Patti (Golda Rosheuvel) tells him to go to the forest and write the names of the abusers in a tree. Now the trio of friends are terrified by nightmares, and the Sandman is looking for their eyes. “Eye for an Eye” (2025) is an American movie of the style of “Nightmare on Elm St.”, when people are attacked in the dreams by Vincent, the Sandman. The story has a good beginning but becomes messy in the rushed end. If the viewer sees with less expectation, he or she may like it. My vote is six.
