Despite the elements I could have done without, the movie is often very funny, and a lot of the credit goes to Del Toro, who creates a slow-talking, lumbering character who's quite unlike his image in "Usual Suspects."

But the bland plot involves nested crimes gone awry and a bad car chase or two, and its bulky, styleless exposition is hard to wait out.

Excess Baggage falls down as a showcase for Silverstone, who made a big splash in "Clueless" and whose production company is releasing this film. She comes across as unappealing and unseasoned in ways that go beyond the role.
40
Although Excess Baggage is not actually unwatchable, this is mostly due to Del Toro's dazed charisma and an inspired bit of weirdness by Christopher Walken as Silverstone's dangerous uncle.

As with so many recent films, this innocuous little romantic comedy suffers far more from the effects of art-by-committee than the ruinous domination of any one person.

Excess Baggage, a scruffy romantic comedy about a despairing rich girl who hatches a kidnapping scheme to test her father's love, is an aimless waste, a star vehicle without a compass. It wants very much to be both funny and poignant, but is more often just noisy and pointless. [29Aug1997 Pg 14]

Beautiful Alicia Silverstone makes this flick worth watching. The plot is less attractive. Spoiled chick fakes her kidnapping so Daddikins will pay more attention to her. Meh. Benicio del Toro is handsome as the love interest, but the ending is stupid, folks. Having said that, not a bad movie, albeit rather sloppy and dressed down.

The great cast and production value feel wasted here. The terrible screenplay and aimless direction contribute to a pacing that feels completely off. There is music cut over the top of dialogue sequences seemingly without purpose. Im sure there couldve been a good movie with these 'ingredients' but this was extremely underwhelming to watch.
