There is an odd sombreness at the heart of what is effectively a slick, flashy, highly entertaining and otherwise quite superficial career celebration, a quality of unease imparted by Elton himself.

The portrait of Sir Elton today — the astonishingly gracious gentleman he is, the family life he found — is revealing and moving.

This hopeful and insightful look into the life of such an icon creates an inspiring and beautiful story that stands tall from the beginning until the very end.

Elton John: Never Too Late is an affecting movie that the musician's fans will likely appreciate, but it's the equivalent of those official oil portraits that the more intelligent and self-aware royals used to commission.

If this is a bookend to his incredible performing career, at least it’s a respectful and tender one.

Elton John: Never Too Late comes across as a safe and well-tooled piece of a carefully managed relationship with Disney.

Apart from a few quippy anecdotes, the only thing holding Elton John: Never Too Late together is the songs.

Maybe 5 of 10 is a bit hard, but the movie didn't show any breathtaking scenes. I hoped for some more background information about his life and career.
