Easy A

Why, then, am I so pleased with Easy A? Because the movie, despite a few flaws, seems to have been made by higher intelligence, and because it catapults Emma Stone into a higher place reserved for American actors who can handle elevated language with casually dazzling aplomb.

Judged on a curve, set by the testosterone-fueled raunch-a-thons that have dominated teen comedies from "American Pie" to "Superbad" and beyond, Easy A deserves an A+, with extra credit for lack of misogyny, c--- talk, or flatulence.

Director Will Gluck (Fired Up!) shows wicked comic timing and uncommon warmth in an overworked genre.

Gluck also directed "Fired Up!," another teen charade with lots of quick-witted verbal raunch. Easy A does a few things better.

Easy A isn't nearly as good a movie as "Clueless," Ms. Heckerling's contemporary pastiche of the Jane Austen novel "Emma." But the one-liner-loaded screenplay has the same insouciant charm.

Easy A has some agreeable fast banter, but it's so self-consciously stylized that it wears you out.

The script, credited to one Bert V. Royal, seems to have been run through an out-of-control sass machine (seriously, it'll make you appreciate Diablo Cody's tact).

Easy A is not a good movie. The first half is incredibly boring and uninteresting, while the second half is the exact opposite of that. And this does not make a good experience. The writing is mostly bad, most of the jokes didn't land for me, there was only one or maybe two occasions when I laughed out loud. The writer's view of the world is too simple: Christians are evil jerks and they are extremely dogmatic, people with old way of thinking are dumb and liberals are awesome and fun. These are too basic stereotypes, in other words: a false representation of the world we live in. Maybe I didn't really enjoy this movie, because I need the characters to be layered and not just stereotypical representations of their race, religion etc. The directing, cinematography was average. The only thing I liked throughout the whole movie is the acting. It was generally good. Nothing extraordinary, but that's not always necessary. All in all, this movie is a fun watch at the end of the day, but the first half is very boring.

A movie we have seen before told with an element but at times seems more concerned with sassy and stylish it is. A breakout role for Emma Stone.

Basically, it's a crude, cruel attempt to make fun of Christians, and make them look like annoying and self righteous jerks. As a Christian myself, this movie was extremely annoying, as we are, for the most part, nothing like that. I also found the movie to be overly politically correct and shameless. It even tries to make teenage sex look harmless. Then there's the problem of the movie thinking it's so much more funny than it actually is. So no matter how good the performances are I just can't recommend it.

I couldn't sit through the first 30 minutes of this; it was like torture. Once again, the media has another annoyingly stupid teen movie that has dumb, unlikeable characters and a dull plot.
