The film positively swills in its disreputability and all-around low-budgetness; sporting a healthy disregard for respectability, Schrader has just gone for it here with a highly focused recklessness that he turns to his creative advantage.

With the bawdy and intoxicatingly batshit Dog Eat Dog, Schrader is off the leash once and for all.

**** crazy and massively entertaining. From the opening scene you have to buckle up. Sharply written and directed with no fear whatsoever. Does for Cleveland what The Friends of Eddie Coyle did for Boston.

I give it the highest mixed. This is a well-shot, stylish film that is seemingly both conscious of its own absurdity as well as completely devoid of any coherence, even in subtext. As my friend said, it's sort of a take on Pulp Fiction. I would add that its purpose seems to be to troll the viewer. The soundtrack was brilliant.

Lacking the earlier stylistic exuberance, Dog Eat Dog loses all momentum, taking forever to come to a conclusion both foregone and deeply dissatisfying.

Dog Eat Dog is all bark and no bite, playing around in a sandbox of vulgarity with little rhyme or reason.

There’s half an argument that this schlocky lowlife caper energises its director’s visual imagination more than we’ve seen lately – hey, at least he’s trying something – but it’s not a juggling feat he can keep up all day.

That’s not to say Dog Eat Dog is bereft of interesting choices. Far from it, though its infrequent bursts of gonzo brilliance are all in service of such an uninteresting premise.

Movie fans might be better off watching a dog actually munch on another dog. Paul Schrader's latest action drama is downright awful.

Even though this movie starts out interesting and has some premise in it that you think it might be somewhat decent or at least a good b-movie type, in the end it ends up just dumb and you think why did you waste your time watching it.
