Working from a script written by original helmer Romero based on a trilogy of lesser works by King, Creepshow 2 is a satisfying little anthology of terror that won't scare you so much as entertain you.

The production values are downright dowdy. Creepshow looks more like Cheapshow. Yet the strong writing offsets the film's weaknesses. Creepshow 2 may not have the major-league excitement of The Exorcist or Aliens, but in its own right, it succeeds. The persistent screams from the audience tell you that. [13 May 1987, p.D7]

Creepshow 2 maintains the entertaining presentation of its predecessor, even giving the titular Creep more of a persona, but the stories within the film are repetitive, predictable and a far shriek from the comedic horrors of the first Creepshow.

feels like watching some subpar episodes of TALES FROM THE CRYPT, but they're charming and really cheesy. The first tale was the weakest, a simple supernatural tale of revenge, but the main villain was kinda great. The second tale is my favorite, because it reminds me of some classic GOOSEBUMPS mixed with a bit of gore, speedo action, and some creepy ****?! The third tale is just crazy, you basically watch a woman (who is crazy because she recently had six orgasms in a row) drive around and crashing into a lot of stuff in her undestroyable 80's Mercedes. It's fun! And wtf does "Based on ideas by Stephen King" mean?!

The episodes are marginally interesting, but each is a little too long. And each could be fully explained in a one-sentence synopsis.

Like the nasty comic books of many a misspent youth, Creepshow 2 is, deliberately, a sometimes lurid and overdrawn anthology. It consists of three unconnected tales of modern American death, a Creepshow comic book come to life. It is as if Romero and director Michael Gornick are determined to spare grownups the embarrassment of taking horror seriously. [01 June 1987]

Tied together with some humdrum animated sequences, three vignettes on offer obviously were produced on the absolute cheap, and are deficient in imagination and scare quotient.
30
First-timer Gornick's direction is so painfully inept that not one of the episodes is even slightly scary, let alone horrifying. The only terrifying thing about Creepshow 2 is the thought of Creepshow 3.

Whereas Romero's approach to this material is distinctly tongue-in-cheek, Gornick makes the mistake of giving the stories a straightforward treatment that merely heightens their inherent weakness. Both pictures use animation to tie things together, though the cartoon work in both is weak.

Though not nearly as memorable as its predecessor, it's still a fun adaptation of some creative Stephen King short stories (particularly The Raft). When I saw it during its theatrical run, my parents got offended and made us leave about halfway through. So it was years later as an adult that I revisited it, and although it wasn't very scary, it had a few great lines and memorable scenes. "Thanks for the ride, lady!"

Abysmal directing, acting, and some of the worst cell-shaded animation I have ever seen.
