A brilliant but completely muddled concoction about the relationship between fantasy and reality. [16 Jul 1992]

As a technical accomplishment it is extrely impressive. But as a work of entertainment, almost any 10 minutes of it are enough. [14 Jul 1992]

Every instinct in me tells me this is a bad movie that has very little redeeming it. YET, for some weird reason I actually like it. I think it is one of those movies that it is so bad that it is good, at least for me it is. The animation is substandard, even when it came out. The references are also dated. The jokes are either nonsensical or just stupid. But then there's Holli Wood: Damn she's fine! Also, it's pretty funny to see one of Brad Pitt's earliest roles. It also has a pretty decent soundtrack. Overall: A cult movie for sure, and sadly I am one of its followers.

Decent, though a disappointment after enjoying Bakshi's great run of Spider-Man cartoons from the 60's. The animation style and great soundtrack--dated in a fine way--make up for such a lousy and uninspired script. I'd much rather come across Shirley Clarke's similarly titled film from the 60's instead.

Underdrawn and overheated, Cool World will leave you cold. [13 Jul 1992]

Austin Chronicle
The interfacing of the two-dimensional and three-dimensional characters is so shabbily accomplished that it makes you start noticing all the other technical glitches in the work.

A fatally compromised, half-realized execution. [ 10 Jul 1992]

Cool World's numerous plot holes and illogicalities might be forgiven if it had interesting characters or impressive visual effects.

Variety
Style has seldom pummeled substance as severely as in Cool World, a combination funhouse ride/acid trip that will prove an ordeal for most visitors in the form of trial by animation.

Boring, dreadful **** mess. One of the worst films I've seen from Brad Pitt. Incredible that just one year later he delivered Kalifornia.

There are two different worlds: The Real World and the Wacky, Animated World. Only one of them will survive.
