Most importantly, Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein doesn’t pretend to mask itself as something more than a cheap thrill, but it’s that tongue-in-cheek self-awareness that not only made it a box office smash, spawning several sequels, but the birth mother of an entirely new genre altogether.

You can almost hear a Universal Studio executive coming up with the idea: "Let's take our two top comedians (Bud Abbott and Lou Costello) and throw in our top money-making creatures - Frankenstein's monster, the Wolf Man and Dracula. The fans'll love it!" They sure did.

This one transcends the subgenre to be a respectful and very funny horror spoof. [11 Feb 1999]

It's a giddy blend of horror and comedy.

The comedy team battles it out with the studio's roster of bogeymen in a rambunctious fracas that is funny and, at the same time, spine-tingling. Stalking through the piece to add menace are such characters as the Frankenstein Monster, the Wolf Man and Dracula.

A little bit of going through the motions with this horror spoof but fans will enjoy.

Most of the comic invention in Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is embraced in the idea and the title. The notion of having these two clowns run afoul of the famous screen monster is a good laugh in itself. But take this gentle warning: get the most out of that one laugh while you can, because the picture...does not contain many more.

Amusing, harmless. Nice old school horror movie sets. Classic Universal monsters battle it out. Wackiness ensues.

The film looks great in the dark. A glass of wine and a loved one nearby wouldn't hurt. Actors who once played iconic characters play here the same roles that made them famous. The presence of Bela Lugosi in the film adds a good old Dracula atmosphere. Of course, Lon Chaney Jr. is an excellent werewolf. It's a pity that Boris Karlof didn't show up. Of course, the clash of famous franchises is interesting in itself, and doubly so in a comedic performance. I recommend it to all fans of classic American cinema.
