Unknown 9: Awakening

Unknown 9: Awakening is a promising start for a new series once you learn to love its combat.

Even when my time leaping into enemies was interrupted by these technical issues, Unknown 9: Awakening’s excellent cast of characters and inventive soul-hopping combat mechanics kept me invested all the way through its gloriously last-gen adventure. With how depressing this generation has been at times, that is absolutely meant as a compliment.

Unknown 9: Awakening boasts great combat and an ambitious story, but performance issues are too many to look past.

Playing through Unknown 9: Awakening left me with a cocktail of emotions when I finally rolled credits after 13 hours. I usually pride myself in my ability to see eye to eye with a game’s vision and try to find even footing even if I didn’t have a good time with it, but this is different. The experience of playing Reflector Entertainment's debut title is akin to watching a bunch of trailers for those Phase 1 Marvel movies alongside the opening act of the first Avengers flick. It felt like proof of concept for a multimedia franchise that doesn’t want to give away too much but hasn’t figured yet out what it’s even about. All of this is skinned onto the early 2010s cinematic video game experience which aside from a few fun, if janky combat encounters doesn’t know how to set itself apart. It's heartbreaking because there is a much better experience in between the in-between that didn’t work.

While many AA games manage to cleverly hide a small budget, the developers of Unknown 9: Awakening have failed in this art. Every element of this game reminds us that we are dealing with an underdeveloped product that proved too challenging for Reflector Entertainment. I don't understand why the studio didn't pick one style of gameplay and focus its limited resources on it. Add to this the poor performance of the PS5 version and serious technical problems, and you get a below-average title.

Unknown 9: Awakening is the video game adaptation of a larger scale project that incorporates other ways of content; and unfortunately falls short. On paper, the proposals seem intriguing, but they have gaps and fail to stand out. It has generic combat, a story that doesn't look interesting and graphics from two generations ago, the fact that Anya Chalotra plays the protagonist couldn't even save it.

This AA game offers a good promise, especially the stepping mechanics. The story is also pretty enjoyable. However I have to admit it has a few technicals issues, but I heard the studio had a bumpy ride during the production process. Animations are stiff, cinematics are weak,and there sitll a few bugs here and there.

Lots of good ideas, but somewhat poorly executed. Gameplay was great, but I ran into some graphics bugs along the way. Boss fights are unnecessarily challenging and way too easy at the same time (and I know that sounds odd). There is also one type of enemy where you basucally just hide and reflect bullets over and over to beat them, which is a waste of time. Still, I think this game is worth the play if you like "Uncharted" style games. Wait for a $30 price and it will be worth the play.

Alright, lemme break it down for ya, kid. Unknow 9: Awakening, huh? Well, let me tell ya, it's a real mixed bag. The cinematics are top-notch, no doubt about it. The mise-en-scene is a feast for the eyes, and the actors do a bang-up job. The lighting is like a movie star, and the art direction is a ****, here's the thing: the gameplay is a whole different story. The possession mechanic is kinda cool, but it feels like it's just there for show. The character progression is like a snail on ice. Haroona's just dropped into the world, and we don't really get a sense of her goals or motivation. The game mechanics are repetitive and feel unnatural. The white markers are like a babysitter, and the animations are a bit buggy. The sound is great, but it could use a bit more **** hey, the voice acting is fantastic. Anya's portrayal of Haroona is top-notch. And the UI... well, let's just say it's a bit of a headache. The power tree is a cool feature, but it's not **** it wasn't for the cinematics, I'd give this game a 4. The potential is there, but it's buried under a pile of gameplay issues. The developers need to step out of their comfort zone and try something new. Otherwise, they might wanna consider a career change to moviemaking.Final score: 7/10.

Summarizing Unknown 9: Awakening's problems in one conclusion is difficult - there are simply too many. In terms of gameplay and presentation, the title lags years behind all current standards; neither the story nor the cliched characters can be attributed any significant positive facet. The few good ideas are almost completely lost in the overwhelming presence of mediocre genre standards. And the tricky combat system is finally the nail in the coffin due to stupidly acting opponents and the chronically hostile camera operation. What was supposed to be the start of a new franchise could quickly turn into a stillbirth. No matter what audience a product like this is aimed at, it’s just not a good thing.
