To its credit, Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files offers a lot of value since it is three adventures games plus new DLC scenarios that were created for the iOS versions. These are milquetoast and boring adventure games where the humour probably landed better in Japanese. The hand-drawn backgrounds and character designs are appealing, but get used to seeing them be recycled across all three titles. The wait for the third Touch Detective does not seem like it was something gamers were begging for. Anyone who enjoyed the first two will likely be happy the with third entry since it is more of the same, but fans of the point-and-click adventure genre will probably find these to be uneventful and dull.

Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files remains a classic series on the 3/DS now home in its remastered, complete state on the Switch. Its silly stories and charming characters provide hours of entertainment for gamers of any age but will especially delight those who remember the titles fondly on their original hardware. If you’re looking for a franchise to fall in love with but don’t want to break the bank, it’s an open and shut case — grab Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files for the Switch.

Touch Detective 3 is a missing piece of a puzzle that is just as delightful as the previous two games, and it’s great to have the full collection of all three games easily accessible on the Switch as Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files. There is a downside to the release, however. The port doesn’t feel optimized for the console, both when it comes to its graphics and the control scheme.

The collection itself is a very sloppy port that just barely manages to cling onto "decent enough to get by". Somehow they managed to make Touch Detective 1 & 2 (DS games) look worse than Touch Detective 3 (3DS game) in this port, which is remarkable on several levels. The localisation of Touch Detective 3 is also very sloppy--there are a number of notable errors that are just absolutely unacceptable for a retail release, which is why I've knocked several points off the overall rating. Apart from a number of typos, and the fact that many of the jokes in Touch Detective 3 have been localized so badly that they lose all the humor (which was still somewhat of an issue in the other two games, but is intensely noticeable here), the Investigation report has a line break error that means that many entries have "n" in the entry titles. One of the entries also forgets to use Norman Touche's localized name, referring to him as "Tachi". While not the biggest issues in the world to someone who knows what these errors means, it's gonna confuse the stockings off anyone who doesn't, and is just absolutely not acceptable for a retail release of an officially localized port. I can only assume they figured no one would really care about errors on an optional screen. Most of the professional reviews don't even bring these things up (only one of them mentions that the jokes don't translate well, but they seem to be referring to the trilogy as a whole), so I guess they weren't wrong. but it just shows how sloppily put together, and how much of an afterthought it was, to actually make this a decent localization. Going back to the port, the porting over of the trademark touch controls (which, let's not forget, is literally in the name of the series) is very half-assed. Playing in docked mode on a TV, using the cursor, is absolutely finicky, and makes certain mini-games in Touch Detective 3 that require quick touch reflexes basically impossible. Yet, even while playing in handheld mode, for some reason the game still requires you to use button controls for a lot of the menu options. Which wasn't so bad on the 3/DS, but when translated over to the Switch and it's removable joycons, it feels needlessly restrictive. Okay, so the port & localization are utter garbage. But what about the games themselves? Well, Touch Detective 1 & 2 are still as charming as ever and still maintain most of the highs & lows they used to have. The new (for us) Touch Detective 3 is the same deal as the first and second--it's full of highs and lows, but, thankfully, mostly highs. The characters and their dynamics remain as quirky as ever, and the humor, in despite of the underwhelming localization, is very on brand for Touch Detective (for better or for worse). Without spoiling anything: Cases one to two felt underwhelming and rather paint-by-numbers without much in the way of standout charm--they felt kinda like they were trying to be a little too consciously "Touch Detective-esque" , but the self-awareness didn't really land. Case 3 went in an opposite direction, and did something a lot more character focused, but that had mixed results. The game thankfully makes up for that by having two of the best cases in the trilogy with cases 4 & 5. Case 4 is the most character depth you're gonna see Touch Detective and combines this with the mystery aspect decently, while the final case feels like a fitting climax for the trilogy Touch Detective 3 streamlined the gameplay a lot, making the puzzles not only simplier, but very linear. Whether you think that's a good thing or not will depend on if you like the puzzles in the first two games in the first place. It also has a hint system, as well, so unlike the first two games, there's not going to be much room to get hopelessly stuck here. Overall, Touch Detective 3 is a good final game in the trilogy--it is the same kind of "flawed gem" that the other two were. Not quite as polished as Touch Detective 2.5 was, but still very much worth playing. Just ignore the very crappy port and the very lackluster localization, and make sure you play it in handheld mode--NOT on a TV screen.

As a 15th anniversary celebration of an incredibly marginal series here in the west, but a far more popular one in Japan, the Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files collection is just blindingly good value. Each game combines classically entertaining and surrealistically funny point-and-click mechanics with memorable characters and some delightfully eccentric moments. This is in so many ways a perfect example of the heart and soul of Japanese game development.

Touch Detective 3 + The Complete Case Files offers a delightful dive back into the charming and bizarre world of Mackenzie and her adventures. While the game shines with its engaging storytelling and character dynamics, the graphical presentation and simpler puzzles might not appeal to all. Nonetheless, the collection provides a comprehensive and accessible experience, making it a valuable addition for fans of the series and newcomers alike, especially those looking for a lighthearted and whimsical puzzle adventure.
