The graphics, the animation, the UI, everything here looks like we've gone back a good 17 years. The technical state of the game is also bad, reminiscent of clinical death, making the game almost unplayable. [Issue#328]

A superb Gollum isn’t enough to save the game he’s been parachuted into, which is by turns dull and frustrating. It’s destined for Mount Doom (the bargain bins). [Issue#29, p.92]
From its abysmal graphics to its utter failure of delivering Middle Earth in any interesting way, this is an example of a game that should be scrapped from its concept inception.

I played this game at launch and oh boy, there's not many games I've regretted buying after 5 minutes of gameplay but this is one. Visuals are horrible, technical issues and bugs galore. Incredibly boring and a wasted opportunity to create something truly unique with an iconic character. At least it taught me to always check reviews first.

A mini-review can't cover everything I want to say about Gollum. I wouldn't recommend the game or even say it's "good", but I don't subscribe to the popular notion that "bad" games are bad at their core and can't be fixed with more bug-fixing and polish. That's usually nonsense. I ended up liking this game, but for every one positive (Gollum's cut-scene animation, his bits of witty sarcasm, climbing and stealth that I enjoyed) there are two negatives (early-game dialogue that repeats at every checkpoint load, a game-breaking glitch in Chapter 2 where I had to start C2 over). It's unfortunate that nobody wants to *be* Gollum in a game and he comes across as accidentally comical, because he's a tragic character that's very fleshed-out and conflicted. The bugs though. And yes, I know the developer was shut down and those bugs will never get fixed.

Just like Gollum, I'm a bit split. The Lord of the Rings: Gollum features a great story that adds to the lore, along with a terrific stealth system, but it misses the mark in other areas. A finicky and redundant platforming system, mixed with a dialogue system that lacks bite makes for a combination that drags the rest down. Gollum is always so close to The Ring, but ever so far.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum shines brightest in the moments where Gollum has a dialogue with secondary characters.

LOTR: Gollum is a failure on almost every level. Beyond an interesting story, it’s hard to salvage anything worth your time in this adventure.

With dated design, LotR: Gollum is a slow and tedious slog through Middle Earth that even the staunchest LotR fans will struggle to enjoy.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is nothing more than a failed project that should have been cancelled, but since it is a lucrative IP, it was released to the market to deceive the unwary and that, gentlemen, is a scam that should not be be tolerated in this industry.

What makes Gollum stand out is that most other developers and publishers then use their creative teams to try and hide the crass cynicism and capitalism. Daedalic didn’t bother with Gollum. This game represents the games industry with its mask off.

With phenomenal next-gen visuals, a rich and compelling story, and a great lead character, The Lord of the Rings Gollum remains a peak for what gaming should be like, especially in a year like 2023. The gameplay is simple as any stealth platformer can get but there's several incredible elements that make this game in a league of its own. There are instances where Gollum will undergo a seizure while climbing vines which I think adds an element of challenge to the platforming and punishes players for going about it mindlessly. I also really enjoyed the choices between Gollum and Smeagol, really makes me feel like I'm molding his character and the story into how I want it to be, something that should be implemented into more games because it makes the player's choices matter. Overall, LOTR Gollum is up there for one of my favorite games of 2023 due to its challenging yet engaging gameplay that I can revisit plenty of times.

SummaryThe Lord of the Rings: Gollum is a story-driven action adventure. Take on a perilous journey as Gollum, chasing the only thing that is precious to him. Gollum is skillful and cunning, but also torn by his split personality. One mind, two egos you decide! Athletic and agile, sneaky and cunning. Driven by the desire to once again hold ... Read More
