Nintendo's formula of bringing its past archive to the present day has once again yielded successful results, resulting in a role-playing game that tastes like sweet, sweet strawberry ice cream.
Super Mario RPG on the Nintendo Switch does an irreprehensible job at bringing back a 16-bit era gem and gives the source material a modern treatment that's able to delight any Mario fan. While it does not revolutionize the RPG genre, and its relative ease and short length fall short of the expectations of hardcore RPG enthusiasts, Super Mario RPG is a marvelous experience for those with a soft spot for the Mario universe, and its adaptation is brilliant, from the improved mechanics to the new challenges.

This globally available remake is a great success and cannot be criticized for anything. It was never a blockbuster, but the basic design influenced a lot of other Nintendo RPGs, and that counts. [Issue#332]

The original is 10/10. This remake is good too, but I wish they did more to make it modern. Gameplay, it’s simple which I personally like. However the mandatory platforming can be stiff and frustrating. It's still a good cozy game though.

3 - Mediocre I’m going to be stone cold against this poor, cute, innocent game. Just know it doesn’t deserve any hate and you will play it and say “wow! Good game!” And be a happier person than me. What this game had on release was a completely new concept: Mario, but a turn-based RPG with action commands. The simple novelty of it was enough to get sweeping praises as a very unique experience in the 16-bit era of gaming. Baller, 10/10. No notes. That novelty is no longer there in 2023. Mario as an RPG? Large catalog of that. Turn-based combat? Evolved so beyond what this game did. Action commands? Outdone repeatedly since. So how does this game stand out today, what’s its selling point amongst a sea of RPGs? I can only identify 1, or 2 depending: it’s probably the only short, 10-20 hour RPG out there. And the other potential selling point is extremely powerful but holds no effect on me: nostalgia. You can like other things about it, or just like the game because you like cute things that make you feel good. But I’m cursed with being a chronically over-critical **** so here we are. I realized early on that all the special abilities and party attacks were superfluous. I killed enemies faster by basic attacking everything endlessly. After realizing this, I proceeded to steamroll the entire rest of the game, barring select special enemies that have to be hit by special attacks to die, by just pressing A. I beat the entire game with the analog stick and the A button. An RPGs combat mechanics live and die on the strategic depth that they offer, what’s the right move against this enemy to edge out the victory. I asked myself that exactly 0 times during Mario RPG. It is babies first RPG, and I’m very happy for baby. Lots of cuteness, and silliness, and cute silliness for baby.

Un juego excelente, el humor se siente muy diferente al del día de hoy pero te saca muchas sonrisas, y aún siendo un remake se nota bien hecho y trabajado, me pareció espectacular

The Super Mario RPG remake is an impossible wish come true. The biggest complaints for this release pale in comparison to incredible visuals, new intense challenges, fantastic music, and well-retained charm. This release is sure to be worthwhile for both fans of the original and first-time Mario players.

This new version of Super Mario RPG still feels fresh. It's another win for Nintendo's approach to remaking their cult classics; as faithful as Metroid Prime Remastered, but updated just enough to entice new players.

some of you need to be reminded that this is a mario family-friendly game for KIDS. It is not some JRPG and should not to be compared to Octopath Traveller. The game is easy, the story is simple, it's a MARIO GAME.

This was a great 1:1 remake of mario RPG. Much better than the terrible paper mario games. It doesn't add anything new (other than boss re battle) but what it does do is faithfully remake the best mario RPG ( and one of the best rpg's in general). It's just as good as the super nintendo and the remade soundtrack id worth it alone. It's still one of my favorite soundtracks. Gameplay still holds up well while actually making the game a tad easier with that special build up. I was hoping reviews and scores would be better as I'd LOVE to see them go with this formula rather than the abysmal paper mario series.

Super Mario RPG is so faithful to the original that calling it a remake feels disingenuous. The game is more of a top-to-bottom remaster. Every scrap of it had been re-built, polished, and reborn for the modern era. The visuals, the music, and the controls all feel crisp and clean. The writing holds up quite well. And there are a few pleasant surprises for fans of the original release. Since I'm so familiar with the game, I wish there was more new content, but I'm at peace with this. It's better that the game be preserved for a new audience. But whether this is your first time playing or your fifteenth, you're gonna love Super Mario RPG for the Switch.

Beautifully polished classic that offers an entertaining adventure for Mario fans and RPG beginners. Experienced gamers shouldn't stumble over the low level of difficulty.

Super Mario RPG is a strong remake from Nintendo thanks to the updated graphics, music and animations. It shows that the 1996-game is a timeless classic due to it's great story and memorable cast of characters.

Super Mario RPG is one of the strangest Mario games in its history: with its world of characters seemingly drawn from an entirely different universe, its darker-than-usual graphic style and its turn-based gameplay, the late Squaresoft's game is one of the Super Famicom's diamonds in the rough that had never before made it to the Old Continent, with a proper localization. A mistake that has now been rectified, with a meticulous translation, a graphical overhaul that does justice to the 1996 game and gameplay adjustments that allow younger players to enjoy it.

The Enemy
Even without some necessary changes, Super Mario RPG remains one of the plumber's most charming and eccentric adventures. The remake faithfully maintains it's quirkyness while expanding the magic with one of the Switch's most impressive graphic treatments. If you are a fan of the original, however, know that this is not exactly the remake that the original deserved.

Love the remake and believe it or not the original classic was what brought me into the Super Mario world

It was a good game, but maybe I am too young to fully enjoy it for what it is

A charming albeit overly simple RPG. I think this is a game I would've had to experience as "babies first RPG" to carry in particularly high esteem. It's a magical little toy box fantasy experience. It feels like you're living inside of a children's book. A storybook that's come to life. As for the actual gameplay and fighting mechanics, it slightly bores me. It's just very rudimentary and something you can kind of run through on auto pilot. Overall it was a pleasant experience that put a smile on my face.

This game is extremely boring and tedious. I bought into the hype and I’m disappointed. I think Wonder is a 10/10 game. I love Mario. I even love turned based RPGs. But I like depth and this game has zero. I don’t get the hype. I see the charm but that is absolutely it. Play a real turned based RPG. Buy Octopath 2 instead.
