A packed fighter with gaming mechanics you’ll enjoy after the initial ten punches. Full of cinematic effects, cliches, big biceps, huge boobs and giant swords. [Issue#290]

Ultimately, that's what you want from a fighting game; something that anyone can pick up and enjoy on their terms. SoulCalibur VI offers an enjoyable story for people who want to get into the lore and characters, fanservice for people that like sex appeal in their fighters, as well as a blend of instantly accessible action and a learning curve for people that want to dig further into the mechanics of it all. Because it is so accessible and enjoyable, I suspect that SoulCalibur VI will become one of my most played fighting games, because it's just that versatile and enjoyable that I'll just default to it when I'm in the mood for a fighter (or looking to play with someone else).

I've played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of this game over all platforms that it has been released for. It the most rich fighting games avaliable and the fully dynamic 3D movement offers so much more than traditional 2D fighters. Online mode is dying out nowadays, but couch Co-op has and will keep this game alive for me. My all time favourite fighter.

A very well done fighting game – nuanced and demanding, but also fun in simple instances of waving some big swords around. [13/2018, p.70]

SoulCalibur is back with a great game that is a pleasure to play. We are not very happy with the DLC policy or the Reversal Edge moves, but everything else is very, very good.

Given all the recycled and only slightly re-touched assets and somewhat underwhelming presentation in the story modes, SoulCalibur VI feels more like a re-release with some additional content than an entirely new entry. It plays perhaps a bit too safe, wary not to change anything too much, apart from making fighting feel flashier and easier. However, it’s also somehow comforting that the game finds its footing in the familiar turf. Now, I can carry on where I was left off ten years ago in SoulCalibur IV (let’s just pretend that SoulCalibur V never existed) and quench the thirst the way-too early axed Lost Swords left me with.

SoulCalibur VI is an accomplished package and a fighting game that just feels great to play. In many ways it returns to the series' roots with a confidence that's been missing from previous entries, and the result is an approachable, entertaining, and rewarding weapon-based brawler. This is the most assured SoulCalibur since SoulCalibur II, and it certainly shows. At the time of publishing this review, we haven't been able to test the game's online features. Once online multiplayer is up and running and we've spent some time battering filthy casuals, we'll update this review with our thoughts and republish.

On paper, it seemed great. A new Soulcalibur game with 20 characters launching on the current generation of consoles! But what we got looks like a copy and paste from something we’ve played before.

It's fascinating, and at the same time, deeply surprising, how a video game can approach excellence in its pure gameplay and, simultaneously, stumble so spectacularly in its single-player experience. Soulcalibur VI is a prime example of this contradiction. The transition of this franchise (which historically offered some of the best single-player experiences in the fighting genre) to what we have today is a case study in itself. The main problem lies in the modern obsession with padding the experience with extraneous mechanics: an unnecessary leveling system, weapon management with stats, and a morality bar that, far from adding depth, turn the main mode (Libra of Souls) into an extremely tedious, boring journey with an unnecessarily serious tone that drags the game's pacing down.Soulcalibur VI is a work trapped in a profound internal contradiction, where the brilliance of its core mechanics constantly competes against strange design choices. Despite the slow menus and a tedious, role-playing campaign, the game shines thanks to its impeccable technical foundation. At its core, the combat is superb, maintaining the characteristic fluidity of eight-way movement and perfect weapon weight responsiveness. Adding to this is the brilliant decision to reboot the timeline, an ideal narrative choice that allowed the return of the franchise's most beloved characters through well-crafted individual stories that recapture the saga's lost identity. For all these reasons, this installment feels like a large-scale homage that rescues and polishes the most memorable virtues of its predecessors, crowned by a limitless customization system. Creating your own fighter is a fantastic experience due to such a vast aesthetic range that allows you to recreate almost any pop culture character, something the community keeps active online today; I fought against Princess Peach and Bayonetta. However, not everything is perfect in this mythical quest for the cursed sword, as the title suffers from several vices common in the current industry and failed mechanical experiments that disrupt the game's flow. The clearest example is Reversal Edge, one of the most divisive additions to the game; this mechanic takes far too long to complete and drastically interrupts the flow of combat, transforming what should have been a simple, technical counterattack, similar to the style of the Dead or Alive series, into a cinematic based on the randomness of rock-paper-scissors that frustrates all types of players. The atmosphere also suffers from a flat soundtrack that lacks the orchestral epicness of yesteryear, and from a worrying scarcity of battle arenas which, although very detailed and attractive, fall short in number compared to the series' golden age.Beyond its main modes, the ecosystem of this title coexists with certain peculiarities that add a unique flavor, starting with the undeniable fanservice factor that has always characterized the franchise. In competitive play, the ranked online mode suffers from a unique problem: allowing the use of custom characters can create a slight disadvantage for those inexperienced with the **** conclusion, Soulcalibur VI is a work of contrasts that functions perfectly as a refined competitive fighting game, but fails in its attempt to transform into a single-player text RPG. Its outstanding combat system and brilliant customization mode demonstrate immense respect for the franchise's legacy, managing to convey a continuous sense of freshness. However, the inclusion of tedious mechanics like Reversal Edge, the scarcity of stages, and the questionable downloadable content policies prevent this installment from surpassing the golden age of its predecessors. Ultimately, it works as an essential title for fans of online combat and visual creativity, but disappointing for those seeking a fluid and organic single-player campaign. RATING 7.5/10

It's fun to play with a friend and the character creation is good. The main story is just very forgettable if you care about that stuff.

I don't think any SC game will capture the passion that was in SC IV. All the characters look the same, what the hell? They all have the same model, no nuances whatsoever on their muscle tone, so all the women look like buff dudes with different height, and everyone has the same eyes and mouth. It looks way too bad. The gameplay also suffered from the introduction of the rock-paper-scissors mechanic which is perfect for amateurs to spam. The tutorials are insanely boring and fighting games need to work on that, especially on such a complex game as Soul Calibur is comapred to Street Fighter and Tekken. Finally, the story was very badly handled, both for the created character and the main story. Not only is the choice of protagonist very bad, but every character is separated into different chapters, so you don't get this intertwined story and get instead these "filler" chapters for all the characters you enjoy. The created character story is the most uninspired thing I've ever seen, and it took me 6 months of forcing myself to finish that utter trash, and even then I almost gave up on it. It also shows how BAD the character creation system is when all the NPCs you meet just look like randomised characters with the same face and model. A you should definitely avoid this game, I was only **** into it because of my love for IV and 2B being in it as a guest character, which by the way, they should be FREE, not paid DLC. The creators even had the gall to say the series would continue if it sold well, but the problem is, you gotta make a good product for it to sell well.

The game has a very deep and engaging combat mechanics which is very stratifying to master. However graphics looks dated, the loading is painfully slow and there is very limited progression system. The story mode is just a disgrace - basically you flip thru few powerpoint slides before the fight. They need to improve interface and make single player progression and stats better. I need to know what characters I already mastered, how many fights this character won/lost, best times, etc. Multiplier interface is even worse - no wonder almost no one is playing this game online. Bottom line is that great game mechanics ruined by horrible interface, slow loading and poor graphics
