Perfect. Amazing story and gameplay. You really feel be in another country and the game surprise you with little details and bigger scenes. The develepment was amazing and the remastered version in PS4 is so great. Once again Square Enix give me a full experience that I will never forget. Thanks

A great improvement over a very good surprise of 2012. PC players of the original game could not see the difference but gamers on PS3 and Xbox 360 and especially newcomers have a great opportunity to (re)discover and enjoy a very good game.

Definitive Edition is not quite an essential purchase – especially if you already played and finished the original release – but it’s definitely worth picking up if you’re hankering after the kind of open world criminal action that doesn’t take itself too seriously.

Whether you've played it before or not, the value for money makes this an impressive package. [Christmas 2014, p.76]

The Definitive Edition of Sleeping Dogs is first and foremost for new gamers who haven't played the fun original. The extra missions are decent, but more of the same and the graphical improvements, while fine, aren't stunning.

While it can look nice under the right conditions (usually during well-lit cutscenes or when the sun goes down), Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition is the least impressive new-gen remaster I've seen so far. And as somebody who played through the entirety of the game upon its original release, the visual tweaks on offer here did little to convince me that I need to play it, or more importantly pay for it all over again.

Alright everyone, I wanted to introduce a new series for those times when there aren’t any new releases that really catch my interest—but I still want to keep the content flowing. So welcome to Rewind Reviews, where we go back and revisit standout titles from previous ****’s 2012. The PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 are at their peak. The industry is dominated by first-person shooters, open-world crime games, and a wave of titles inspired by Grand Theft Auto. Amidst that landscape came a game that carved out its own identity—a love letter to Hong Kong action cinema. Today, we’re revisiting one of my favorite games of all time: Sleeping Dogs.Years earlier, following the release of True Crime: New York City, Activision attempted to develop True Crime: Hong Kong. After years in development, the project was ultimately cancelled. Fortunately, United Front Games and Square Enix revived the project, rebranded it as Sleeping Dogs, and introduced it with a striking live-action trailer. As a martial arts practitioner and lifelong fan of action cinema, my excitement was immense—this felt like the game I had been waiting **** step into the role of Wei Shen, an undercover police officer returning to Hong Kong after spending much of his life in San Francisco. His mission is deeply personal and extraordinarily dangerous: infiltrate the Sun On Yee Triad, a criminal organization he grew up around, and bring it down from **** begins at the bottom, working as a foot soldier for the Water Street Boys—collecting protection money and asserting the gang’s control over its territory. Early on, the tension within the organization is palpable, as a power struggle unfolds between Winston and Dogeyes. As the narrative progresses, Wei rises through the ranks—from street-level enforcer to Red Pole (Underboss)—all while struggling with his identity. Much like the internal conflict depicted in Donnie Brasco, Wei begins to blur the line between officer and criminal, questioning who he truly is. Periodic police missions and investigations serve as reminders of his original objective, anchoring him before he crosses a moral point of no return.During an era filled with open-world crime titles such as Saints Row, Red Dead Redemption, Mafia, and Just Cause, Sleeping Dogs distinguished itself through its gameplay focus. Rather than emphasizing gunplay, the game centers on visceral hand-to-hand combat inspired by kung fu and mixed martial arts. Combat is fluid, impactful, and deeply satisfying.Players can expand their move set by collecting jade statues scattered throughout Hong Kong. Returning these statues to a dojo unlocks new techniques, encouraging exploration and mastery of the combat system. Side activities further enrich the experience: hacking security cameras, identifying drug dealers to improve your police ranking, visiting health shrines, collecting lockboxes for cash, competing in fight clubs, and building “Face” value through favors, races, and other challenges.Although firearms are present, they are used sparingly and strategically. When they do appear, the game introduces a cinematic bullet-time mechanic—slowing time during vaults and headshots, extending the effect with precise execution. Another standout feature is action hijacking, allowing players to leap from one moving vehicle to another at high speed, creating thrilling, film-like moments rarely seen in other games.Revisiting Sleeping Dogs after five years, I can confidently say it still holds up remarkably well. It delivers action, drama, romance, and a uniquely cinematic experience that remains distinct even today. The story is compelling, the side content is abundant, and the combat system continues to feel fresh and engaging.Unfortunately, the game has since been delisted from digital storefronts, meaning physical copies are now the primary way to experience it. Nevertheless, it remains, in my view, a near-perfect title.Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition — 10/10I’ve been your host, The Maritime Nerd.

It’s fun and a great homage to all kung-fu movies from the 80s. Gets a little bit repetitive rafter a few hours, but not as bad as RDR2.

I rarely give a low score to a game (you can check my profile), but for sleeping dogs, I don't know how I can rate this game high, because every aspect in this game is *below average*. It is understandable that in the past PS3 gen, this game is doing fairly 7/10, but nowadays there are many great AAA openworld games out there. Sleeping dogs does not have anything to compete with them. Graphic - very outdated The world - lifeless, not as good as other AAA games. Main Story - mediocre at best, I mean, this kind of plot that police becomes a spy to get into the criminal gangs is happened everywhere in action movie. Boring. The pace is slow too. Sidequests - Nothing worth mentioned. Gameplay - still below average in my opinion. Coming from someone who has play Yakuza series, Barehanded fighting is not nothing special at all. Other things are very average. Music - below average for AAA games. No music that catched my ears. In conclusion, if I rate 5/10, that means the game has all aspect average with no strength, but for Sleeping dog, most aspect are below average with no any strength to compete with other AAA games at all so I had to rate 4/10. I played the game for several hours then had no motivation to continue. If you want to play a game that has better street fighting and much much better story writing, I strongly suggest Yakuza 0. If you want openworld AAA games, there are ton of them out there. Sleeping dogs is not worth any of your money, unless you have so much free time that you finished all of great AAA games, then maybe 10 bucks for this game, but don't expect anything good here.

This game is just riddled with bugs and **** and it crashes completely at least once a session. The most infuriating bugs are the disappearing objects, which either cause you to fail a mission (guy you're tailing just disappears), or causes you to lose exp (sudden vehicles out of thin air). Second thing is the melee fighting mechanics, which are the whole core of the game as the weapons are truly scarce. The only real strategy that works in a fight is to (a) grap smaller opponents, beat them up, run away, (b) kick bigger opponents once, run away, (c) wait for the guy with a knife to strike, counter and hope none of the others are too close, run away. I think the countering system is essentially broken, where even if your reaction time is on spot, the character just does nothing to avoid damage. Best just to run in circles and grab, grab, grab. Driving is frustrating as hell, and it's almost impossible to get full points on cop missions due to this. Also, the ramming? Why do something this cartoonish in an otherwise "realistic" game.... Just ridiculous. I give props to this game for the story though, and the dossiers on the main characters are actually well written and entertaining.
