Without a doubt the greatest game every created on the Playstation 2 videogame system. It is the best hands-down. No other game can come even close to this one...The possibilities of Grand Theft Auto San Andreas are endless.

San Andreas breaks the video game mold and emerges as something far greater. This is more than a game. This is entertainment at its best. [Dec 2004, p.170]

Only the graphical bugs, slow-down and other nit picks associated with the fact that the game is pushing the aging PS2 to its limits keeps this from being the first perfect entry into the series.

I finished the game after around 50 hours. I finally took the time to sit down and actually play through the whole game instead of playing the first few missions and just dropping it afterwards (I know it's stupid), and since GTA 6 will be coming out soon, there's no better time to fully play through this game. As I'm writing this, I'm just now realizing how generational this game is. For a game that came out in 2004, this game was WAY ahead of its time, one of the best open-world games I have ever played, and probably my favorite GTA game of all time, now surpassing GTA 5 for me. The gameplay is incredible; there's so much you can do in this game, it's amazing. The game features role-playing/life simulator elements, you can go to the gym and work out to gain muscle and stamina, and you can also eat so much that you get fat. The more you swim underwater, the more your lung capacity also improves, which is awesome! This game even has a weapon proficiency system! The more you use a weapon, the more your accuracy will improve. The more you drive and the more you fly, the better you will get. You can learn DIFFERENT fighting styles. You can even recruit gang members and take over gang territories! (Do y'all see what I mean when I said this game was ahead of its time? THIS IS INCREDIBLE! WHY IS THIS SYSTEM NOT INCLUDED IN ANY MAINLINE GTA GAME AFTER THIS??? WHY WERE WE GOING BACKWARDS??? It is actually mind-boggling and insane that this wasn't brought back for GTA 4 and 5. Hopefully, this is brought back in GTA 6, because this RPG/Life sim element can really have potential if they bring it back and improve on it more.) There are also a LOT of side activities/missions you can do! Such as: taxi driver, paramedic, firefighter, vigilante missions, pimping, valet, burglary, trucking, driving/flying/boat schools, spraying tags, getting collectibles, and SO MUCH MORE!!! The main missions are also really fun; some were annoying or were just outright terrible, but for the most part, the missions were good to great. The final mission, "End Of The Line," is easily the best mission in the game and probably the best final mission in the series; that mission right there is just what defines "Grand Theft Auto". Iconic mission. The map IS INCREDIBLE (and WAY BETTER than GTA 5). You have three whole cities (Los Santos, San Fierro, and Las Venturas) and a desert that you can explore, each with many different things that you can do. Truly amazing. The story is also incredible from start to finish, CJ is one of the best video game protagonists ever, and this game also has a memorable cast of characters as well. To conclude, GTA San Andreas is one of the greatest games of all time, and is now my favorite GTA game of all time (So far). Truly a timeless classic that I will definitely come back to here and there. If you haven't, please play this game, you will enjoy it! Highly recommend. 10/10

Massively expansive, even over "Vice City." The biggest game ever. [Jan 2007, p.106]

Holy f***ing s***. (Sorry...I'm swearing a lot more now because of San Andreas.) I can't wrap my head around how much stuff is packed into this one disc. It's grand, it's ambitious, and funny as this may sound, it's legendary. [Dan Hsu]

This could very well be remembered as the PlayStation 2's best game ever.

There is personality and atmosphere everywhere in this game and even small things such as the body language of pedestrians sets the scene in every neighbourhood you visit.

San Andreas's chief advantage over "Vice City" is size. And for many players, that's good enough. But another group of fans will come to quietly understand that, at least for the time being, "Vice City" remains the high point of the GTA series.
60
It would feel truer to the game's open environmental design if you could have more general goals: kill an enemy when and how you like; raise money for an objective through any method available; challenge random people to races.

This game gets a lot of praise from people purely because of its open world. Its open world is why people like it. And now the point is...Grand Theft Auto San Andreas is a bad game. It can be fun sure, but the game is designed very badly. This game is unfocused, which is a very bad thing. Gta has a very large story, missions built around these stories that you must do to unlock more of the open world...thats the game. Running around, jacking cars and shooting hookers is not the game. Sure you can do it but thats because the game is designed poorly. If this game was just story and nothing else this game would not have gotten a 95, maybe a 70 at best. If you like this game you like the open world and breaking the game with cheats. Thats another thing, if a developer puts cheats in their game pretty much confirms that they know themselves that the game isnt satisfying enough and need to add more stuff to keep you interested. San Andreas is very much like Gta 5 and suffers from the same problem. The story is not its strong point, its the open world and they dont work together unfortunately because the world is so unfocused and far from the missions that players just dont care for the story and end up cheating, resulting in a rebellious mood towards the game which is one of the worst things to have. Just Cause 2 is the perfect example of how to make Story, missions, open world and fun all work together. Gta does not do that well and the results are a messy, unfocused game with a huge open world that tricks you into thinking its a good game. Overall? Vice City is the best Gta to date, focused, simple and can still be fun. San Andreas and gta 5 are same. They can be fun sure but its not a good game.

Didn't age well, and frankly always was overrated. Yes, it had a massive map, it was important that one could do so many things, all of this is true, but the story of grown men doing graffiti, riding bicycles (when you are told to), getting haircuts (when you are told to), the rough graphics and the pop up, the lame story (unless you're really into 90s rap culture, I guess)...I never could get into it. It's a shame the story ruined what could have been a great game.
Summary[Metacritic's 2004 PS2 Game of the Year] Five years ago Carl Johnson escaped from the pressures of life in Los Santos, San Andreas... a city tearing itself apart with gang trouble, drugs and corruption. Where filmstars and millionaires do their best to avoid the dealers and gangbangers. Now, it's the early 90s. Carl's got to go home. Hi... Read More
