Skate changed skateboarding games forever for me. Skate ruined the THPS series for me, those are no longer skateboarding games to me, they’re just skateboarding themed score-attack platformers to me now. It’s been difficult to find anything to fill the Skate-void since the Xbox 360, but this game does the trick. First things first, this game has a lot of rough edges: graphics aren’t great, off board stuff is super janky, there is some onboard jank here and there as well, trophy progression is broken for quite a few trophies, and the animations aren’t always the greatest looking. Admittedly, that seems like a lot of stuff, but the game is so much fun to play if you are looking for a game that feels like skateboarding. There is so much more required from the player mechanically in this game to pull off tricks, and it feels so satisfying when you’re able to do it after trying over and over. To give you an example, in Skate, to do a kick flip you would flick your right stick down then diagonally up and to the left (regular footed), and your avatar will do a perfect kick flip that they will catch and land all on their own. In Session, each joystick controls a foot so in order to do a kick flip you have to flick the right joystick down and then flick the left joystick diagonally up and left after your tail hits the ground, but you’re not done there, you also have to time it and flick the right stick again to catch the board before you land. This gives even simple tricks like kick flips some real depth and difficulty in Session, because the timing is based on how fast you flick the left stick, faster flicks will make the board flip faster so you can do double, triple, and quadruple kick flips and a slower flick can make a nice stylishly slow kick flip. This trick system combined with a physics system where angle, speed, and timing are all integral to being able to connect with a rail or ledge make Session’s gameplay feel incredibly deep. The game also has a large number of settings that you can tweak to make the gameplay more like a sim or more like an arcade (essentially easier or harder) based on your preferences. It can sometimes take 30 min - an hour just to do a flip trick into a grind on a rail/ledge, completing a line can take well over an hour to perfect and it feels so damn satisfying when you do it. This game makes you feel like you actually achieved something through persistence and practice. I’m 39 years old and have been working a manual labor job since I was 18, so skating is a lot harder on my body than it used to be and it’s risky for my career to try certain things; this video game is the closest thing I have found to giving me that feeling that skateboarding does.

The best skating game there is. Better than skate, better than Tony Hawk. And yes, this game has less content than those games. But the gameplay is just miles better, it feels like you are the Skater. Everyone who doesn't like this game is a diaper wearing noob. This game is peak skating

This has to be the most love hate relationship with a game. Half the time it works as intended but the other half is game breaking glitches

If you like skateboard games or skateboarding in general, this game is better than Tony Hawk PS!

If you thought not being able to skateboard in real life was fun wait till you can't do it in a video game either. What almost feels like a fun skateboarding game is held back by a learning curve that most will probably just give up on. Sessions opts to go with a two joystick control system for tricks which requires you to input potentially multiple flicks into two joysticks back to back which isn't impossible but isn't a skill most people will have right off the back and causes the game to feel less fluid. When you do manage to do something on purpose or that you wanted to do it does feel good. But do to controls and lack of any real substance most will probably put this one down to play something else.

One of the most difficult and rewarding gaming experiences I have undertaken. As a real life skater, I have to appreciate a game like this. As of September 8, 2024, it is the most played game on my PS5. And that is after I had already beat it on Xbox Series S. I decided to beat the game with manual catch on just to torture myself, and I loved every minute.

User reviews on here are largely populated by ignorant troll psyho-babble and this game's user reviews are no different. This is akin to THPS as much as Mario Kart is to a truck driving simulator. This is not an arcade game, the controls are complex but intuitive due to the fact they reflect the real life motions required to execute different tricks. Like skating, it's hard at first but gets easier the more you play; after not too long all your favorite tricks will become second nature. Considering how small of a dev team the game looks pretty good, and if you're a fan of skate videos you'll recognize a lot of famous spots, something that other games have attempted but never have pulled off in this amount (or this well). If you enjoy skating in reality you'll likely enjoy this skateboarding SIM.

I FINALLY GOT THE PLATINUM TROPHY. What torture!
I believe my review is made with sufficient knowledge of the facts. This game is simply too buggy. In some historical challenges and main missions, the game does not register the correct trick sequence even after completing it several times precisely as requested. On top of that, all game counters (tricks, grinds, hours of playing, etc.) reset THREE TIMES at some point for me for no reason. Therefore, the grind trophies (such as performing 1000 kickflips, 500 smith grinds, etc.) got stuck, and I had to repeat them all from scratch to get the corresponding trophies! Besides that, the game is surprisingly poor, crude, and unpolished. It explains nothing to you except for a far insufficient tutorial. It expects you to perform tricks without clarifying how to do them (the menu isn't much use). This game should have been fixed before release. It is a shame that it is still in such a status after so long. Basically, it's not even remotely worth the money, and, above all, it's not worth even a second more of my time. Play it and chase the platinum only if you are crazy enough

Bad game, the gameplay is bad, even Tony Hawk is better than this, it's complicated, in the tutorial you realize that it's an unknown game with horrible quality. It's basically the same as those games that are unknown and disappointing in many ways.

No other Skate Game feels as good as Session, since the controls offer you full control over the board.
It has some flaws and a couple of bugs but it also is a small dev team so a lot of it is forgiveable

could have been cool. but you spend half the time searching for"how to"since the game doesn't help you much outside of a couple of text lines. too bad.

Doesn't work: mission objectives do not register. Players have been locked out of the game for over a year. Currently free but NOT worth it because the programming is sub-amateur. This review is supposed to be a Zero, but metacritic keeps changing it to a 9.

This was even worse than tony hawk last games! I think we should be able to request refunds more often!

No other skating game or sim to date comes even close to mimicking the feeling of failure and success of skateboarding like a session does. Session teaches you about the hardship of learning to skateboard and rewards you with the same euphoria you get in real life. Hard to master but worth your time.

Hard to master but once you get used to it then it becomes really good and hard to go back to skate. Easily my favorite skateboarding game. Has a few issues but its a small dev team so they are doing the best they can

I give it a 6. It is fun but still has bugs and no updates. Also I don't like the fact that they charge full price for what seems a beta version of the game. They released a DLC for which I thought would be free considering the base game feels kind of unfinished and lacking content.

Incomplete game filled with bugs that hinder your ability to finish the story mode. Either the people that manage this game are lazy or incompetent. Waste of time and money, finish your product before you start charging money for it.

Graphics look very old If you do not know everything about skating tricks you will spend 50% of your time googling what the game wants you to do Controls are so non-intuitive, it’s like you have to learn a new language just to play the game a little Camera usage in Film-Mode is not smooth at all Would recommend this game in a 15$ Sale

Skateboarding is difficult, and this simulation reflects that. If you want for the days of pressing X and up on the d pad to do a 900 Christ Air then go do that.

This game is simply not fun. They ruined it with the latest update, and the controls are a total mess, and they seem to be unwilling to fix that in the future. Get Skater XL instead.

Good- Great physics-driven systems; plenty of moves and tricks to master; great gameplay customization. Bad- Lackluster story mode; bland visual presentation; steep learning curve. Thoughts- In conclusion, Session: Skate Sim is a hardcore simulation game which means it might not probably appeal to anyone not willing to spend dozens of hours in trying to understand the many nuances of this complex web of mechanics and physics. On the flip side, the bland visual presentation and the lackluster story campaign will put off even the most ardent fans of the genre.

The character customization is humorously lacking and basically unacceptable in 2022. The controls do not feel intuitive at all. I had high hopes, which just makes the drop-off even more pronounced. I couldn't be more disappointed in this game.

I played this game on pc when it was still in early access and I liked it, but as a complete version 1.0, I can't accept it. There is too much wrong with it. They programmed the skater to be regular and if you try to make your skater goofy they just give you a regular skater who is skating switch. I chose my skater to be goofy and as soon as the game started I was like "why is his footing so weird?" Well, that's why. One of the first missions is to do a trick on a manual pad that has a curve in it. Turning while manualing is so incredibly frustrating. The triggers just don't feel right for turning no matter how you adjust the settings, and he seems to just give up and put all 4 wheels down arbitrarily, despite me still holding the stick in the manual position. So why did they choose a curved manual pad for the location of their 2nd mission? Did they want to showcase how broken the game is? I finally did a manual kickflip out on it in hardcore mode and I wanted to pull out my hair by the time I landed it. Like many things in this game, it would have been easier to learn the trick in real life. THE GAME DIDN"T EVEN RECOGNIZE THAT I DID THEIR CHALLENGE! Then I did it again but this time I put 4 wheels down by accident before kickflipping off the ledge and then it recognized it as a make. That happened a bunch of times on the previous challenge too. I did like 4 nosemanuals and then on the last one I hit my back wheels on the way out and it recognized that one. Character models look really bad. You meet Mark Appleyard and he looks like a bum, then they show you the photo of him (there is no voice acting, just static photos with text) and you wonder how they made such a hideous in game model of such a handsome guy. Controls are way too finicky and don't give you feedback about what you're doing wrong, nor does the tutorial go in depth about the subtleties of the (questionable) game mechanics. For instance, I can't seem to frontside crooked grind without heelflipping out. Eventually I figured out that you have to pop out at the opposite angle that you're locked in, but even knowing that, he still heelflips out most of the time because it's so finnicky about the angle. It just feels broken in so many ways. If you try to do a line with quick footing, the game just doesn't respond to what you want to do. If you don't stay crouched long enough before you pop, the skater will just shuffle his feet to the front of the board to set up for a nollie. This game needs WAY more playtesting, fine tuning, and quality control. I'm more than happy to revise my review down the line because there are things I like about this game, but I'm offended that it's being a released as a complete game, and it's broken-ness extremely apparent even seconds into playing, that's why I'm giving this abysmal score. The game is decent as an early access game, but don't tell me this game was ready for launch. As much as I want to try and show love to smaller studios, this is a prime example of why bigger studios dominate the market.
