For a game made in 1998 it's truly a graphical achievement with amazing gameplay at that time and mind-blowing boss fight

This game is wildly overrated. It's slow and boring and the character is meh. Story is pretty generic. It's basically one of those, the government is corrupt and run by a secret organization.

The game of my life, a true revolution. In 1998, when I got the Japanese version of this game and played it, my brain literally exploded. The second and third games are great, but this one is a masterpiece from beginning to end, combining espionage and fun in an intuitive and uncomplicated way, where going unnoticed through Shadow Moses is extremely rewarding, with memorable bosses in epic battles. Words fail me; there's certainly a lot of emotion involved in this review, but only those who lived through it at the time know how magnificent it was, and even playing it today, it remains a masterpiece.

Metal Gear Solid 1 is the best game I’ve ever played in my life. The mechanics, the story, the bosses, everything is excellent. Even after all these years, I keep replaying it, and it still gives me that same feeling I had when I first played it on the PS1 with my father. Trying to get past the first areas, struggling through the early zones, fighting the bosses, every moment felt intense and **** other modern game has ever made me feel the same way, especially in terms of difficulty and atmosphere. There’s something about MGS1 that modern games just can’t replicate.

Metal Gear Solid (1998) – A Timeless MasterpieceMetal Gear Solid isn’t just a classic — it’s revolutionary. When it released on the PlayStation in 1998, it completely redefined what video games could be. It wasn’t only about gameplay; it was about storytelling, cinematic direction, voice acting, and emotional depth.Directed by Hideo Kojima, the game introduced players to a complex narrative filled with political themes, moral ambiguity, and unforgettable characters like Solid Snake. At a time when most games focused purely on action, Metal Gear Solid delivered tension through stealth, atmosphere, and psychological mind games. What truly made it groundbreaking were its bold design choices — breaking the fourth wall, forcing players to think outside the box, and blending cinema with interactive gameplay in a way no other game had done **** despite being decades old, it’s still playable and impactful today. The controls may feel dated, but the atmosphere, soundtrack, and writing remain powerful. Very few games age this well. Even now, it stands as one of the most influential titles ever made. There’s simply nothing quite like it.

A stellar game that really pushes the edge of the Playstation to what it absolutely can be for almost every game! Espionage, stealth tactics, gun play and combat? Absolutely!

There’s literally nothing bad to say about this game. It can be difficult if you’ve never played it, frustrating yes. The voice acting can be a little bit amateur, but I think that’s part of it’s charm. If there’s anybody that gained in the 90s that didn’t play this game, I seriously doubt their involvement in the entertainment medium. This is a perfectly “solid” game.

**Metal Gear Solid 1** is one of the greatest PlayStation 1 games ever, pioneering ideas that were completely new at the time. When most games were just mindless “shoot and move forward,” this game showed that a true shooter requires strategy—every bullet must be carefully considered before firing. It was revolutionary for the gaming industry. I absolutely love this game and deeply respect the work that went into it. The story Kojima crafted is mind-blowing, and the narrative it delivers is something you just don’t see in modern games.

I finished this Game today, all the mechanics, history, characters, are soo well built, till the point it feels like a Game of 2026, the gameplay can be a Lil bit rough, but the complexity of the drama adds more joy to the game itself. I really suggest play this Game in 2026

This game remains one of the best games of all time even all these years later. It does things that no other game has done since and is so charming at every point. To me, Metal Gear Solid is everything a video game SHOULD be. It's quirky and comedic at the right times, but also serious and impactful. Above all, its self aware that it is a game. It frequently breaks the 4th wall like nothing else I've ever seen. Playing this game for the first time in 2025, I was repeatedly in shock at how special this game is. It is truly memorable and mesmerizing.

On PlayStation, PS2, PS3, PS4/5 or Nintendo Switch or your fridge (it doesn’t really matter where), Metal Gear Solid is a simple MUST-PLAY **** gem. Hideo Kojima’s baby pioneered modern gaming’s standards for cutscenes and stealth-driven gameplay, also putting the CINEMA in cinematic! Metal Gear Solid went above and beyond to be more than a game and became a genuine piece of art! The story was great, the acting similarly incredible and the music put many multimillion-dollar Hollywood blockbusters of the time to understandable shame. Metal Gear Solid balanced gameplay and cinematic elements to basically show that it worked as an immersive experience as well as being a feature film on the PlayStation (before DVDs were even standard stuff). Metal Gear Solid is a masterpiece: 10/10. 5/5. It’s that simple. It’s one of those rare perfect games that deserves to be played by EVERY self-professed gamer on Planet Earth.

Hideo Kojima's original classic remains a masterful example of merging cinematic storytelling with expertly crafted gameplay. It was a game that in its day pushed the medium forward in unique and creative ways, and it still manages to impress in all the same ways a quarter of a century later.

What should I say about this great game that was one of the most important games in whole industry, it was the first nonRPG to have a solid and heavy story to the point it looked like a movie. The graphics back then were impressive, using all the PlayStation Hardware as well as the animation was quite impressive. Kojima was truly a genius about breaking the forth wall, some parts of the game, one of the characters will tell put a controller in your arm or that specific boss will try to read your memory stick, also it’s worth mentioning all bosses are really great, all of them are quite likable. My only criticism was the controller that felt like moving somewhat a tank, if we compare with Mario 64 that is still amazing when it comes to controls, MGS 1 didn’t age nicely in terms of control. Overall, my score this game is 9/10.

I've always had this opinion, but after recently replaying the whole series, I'm even more certain: Metal Gear Solid 1 is the best game ever made. The number one, the GOAT, and I can explain why. It's 2025, yet it's still hard to believe this is a game from 1998. Back then, we were playing things like Resident Evil, with its incredibly cheesy voice acting, or platformers with little to no story. MGS1 changed all of that. Not only it was extremely ambitious for its time, it succeeded on everything it tried to do. This game has some of the best, if not the best, voice acting in the history of video games. David Hayter, Cam Clarke, Greg Eagles… honestly, pretty much everyone delivered an unforgettable performance. Rewatch the Gray Fox death scene if you don't believe me. I've been playing games my whole life, and no other scene has ever delivered the same raw emotion. Gray Fox, torn to pieces, using his last breath to beg Snake to fire the Stinger. Snake's voice cracking as he screams Gray Fox's name, torn between killing his friend and stopping Metal Gear. Every codec call, every line, every dramatic quote is delivered with weight: "We're not tools of the government or anyone else." "Your brother just saved you, me, and the whole world." "I gave in to my fear, I gave in to my pain, I sold your life to save my own!", and the list goes on and on and on. The soundtrack is equally PHENOMENAL. From the very start, the atmosphere is set with "Introduction" on the title screen. Then you've got iconic pieces like "Encounter" during alerts, "Enclosure" during emotional moments, the eerie "Intruder" tracks when you're sneaking around, and "Escape" blasting during Gray Fox's final monologue and the jeep chase. Every track is a masterpiece, there isn't a single weak one. It's perfect all the way **** story is amazing. Even though it constantly references Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, it does so in a way that fills in all the blanks for newcomers. You won't need an old MSX to understand what's going on. A newcomer might ask, "Who the hell is Big Boss?" Snake lays it out during the prison scene: Yeah, there was this Big Boss guy. Yeah, he was the greatest soldier of the century. Yeah, he was my father. Yeah, I killed him anyway. Some people just need killing." Or, "Who's this Gray Fox ninja lunatic?" The game explains Frank Jaeger's entire story, even the minefield fight from MG2SS. By the end, you've got the complete package. That's something no later Metal Gear game ever fully pulled off, as we all know Metal Gear games are heavily dependent on context from previous titles. The gameplay is perfectly balanced. Every single item has its use. Compare that to MGS2, 3, or 4, all of which hand you a pile of weapons and gadgets most players will never touch. Hell, the first time I finished MGS3, I never even used the sonar thingy which is a mandatory item iirc. And the elephant in the room for me is that the game is not linear. From the very beginning, you have multiple paths and approaches. Take the route from the heliport to the tank hangar. You can go through the front door, the lower vent, or the upper vent, each with different consequences. Enter the lower vent without killing anyone and you get one cutscene. Use the upper vent and rack up a few kills with the SOCOM, you get a different cutscene and dialogue. Forgot the SOCOM in the truck before meeting Meryl? Different cutscene again, and this time he even steals her FAMAS instead of the iconic "Can you shoot me, rookie?" scene. The game constantly adapts to your actions, and every playthrough feels unique and different. As much as I love the whole series, I can confidently say MGS1 is my favorite. Not just my favorite Metal Gear, but my favorite game of all time. And having played most of the biggest hits released in the past two decades, I still wholeheartedly believe nothing compares to it.

By today's standards, Metal Gear Solid is outdated and frankly a chore to play. Unintuitive controls, archaic game design, restrictive saving system are already detrimental but typical features of older games. The real problems lie in the story and boss fights. MGS's story pales in comparison to later entries, with less stakes and more idiotic moments, portrayed by liquid snake, who's an unremarkable villain devoid of any wit or charm. It's not a bad story by any means, but it isn't the spy action blockbuster that it's hyped up to be. However, the worst part of this game is unequivocally the boss fights. While some can be decent, most of the boss fights in this game go from annoying to downright frustrating, especially when factoring the terrible controls. The last boss fight in particular is especially drawn out and terrible. While Metal Gear Solid was an innovative product for it's time, especially with it's decent characterization, game mechanics, set pieces and voice acting, it is antiquated, frustrating, and in dire need of a remake.

One of the greatest games EVER, solid 95/100 rounded up to 10 for metacritic. An extremely revolutionary experience for its time and clearly one of the top 5 games of the 5th generation. MGS1 is a game that aged incredibly well for having almost 30 years, the game has little to zero things to criticize such as bit of clunkiness of the controls which is normal for a game of that time. Incredible bosses, story, cinematography (Kojima excelled on this for a ps1 game) and gameplay. Totally recommended

Metal Gear Solid served as an introduction to the series for many players. Although the controls now feel outdated and, in my view, quite challenging, it is important to consider that they were likely more acceptable at the time of the game's release. Setting aside these control issues, the narrative remains exceptional—truly a 10 out of 10. I believe everyone should experience the Metal Gear series at least once in their lifetime.

I played this game for the first time a few years ago and man, even though it's like 30 years old, the graphics don't feel old and outdated but charming and artsy due to the artstyle and while the controls can feel a little clunky sometimes, in general, they were pretty responsive and crisp. Overall, for a game this old, it the gameplay and story are still so charming and fun that it can't be classed into anything else than a timeless classic. 10/10

It's hard to overstate just how impressive and original this game was back when it first released in 1998. When it comes to cinema, you could make arguments for other earlier games, like the Lucas Arts ones, but this game felt like the true arrival of Hollywood in games, despite it being made by Japanese. Plus, it pioneered the 3D stealth genre. Really hard to overstate the influence of this game. Kojima stories will never not be a bit wacky, but that's part of the charm, at least sometimes.

Metal Gear Solid is a landmark achievement in game design and storytelling, a pivotal keystone in the history of video games. Released in 1998, it redefined what the medium could express, blending cinematic direction, voice acting, and gameplay into a seamless, immersive experience. Every element—from its stealth mechanics to its psychological themes—was ahead of its time. Kojima’s direction turned a simple infiltration mission into a layered narrative about nuclear deterrence, identity, and the cost of war. The game’s pacing is near perfect, each encounter—from the sniper duel with Wolf to the mind-bending battle with Psycho Mantis—designed with narrative intent and mechanical innovation. Its tight level design, iconic characters, and unforgettable soundtrack still hold up today. Metal Gear Solid didn’t just raise the bar; it redefined it. It’s a 10/10 not just for what it was, but for what it made possible.

Easy 10/10. Metal Gear Solid is a masterpiece in storytelling, atmosphere, and gameplay. Metal Gear Solid is the most overrated series of all time. It has a convoluted anime plot that constantly retcons and contradicts itself with every new game. Nonsensical tacticool jargon to entertain easily impressed military otakus. Insanely long cutscenes with terrible choreography/cinematography that look like you gave a middle schooler Blender after having him watch The Matrix. Dialogue that is so pretentious and so far removed from how real people speak that it feels like you're reading through a chuuni teenager's poetry in his diary. Extremely simple stealth mechanics compared to its contemporaries like Thief and Splinter Cell. Thinly-veiled (AKA in-your-face) fetish fuel everywhere, they might as well have just had a golden shower scene or gay r*pe scene straight up for how much the games reference p*ss and feature male as* shots. Most memorable parts of the games are literally just gimmicks like Mantis referencing your memory card saves or doing something ret**ded like taking the fake death pill to get past the game over screen to fight the Sorrow (the entire fight is holding up on the control stick, LOL). These games are **** and have always been **** and I'm tired of pretending they're not. The only slightly good ones are Peace Walker and 5 because they at least are more gameplay-focused, and 5 has some great mechanics, but it's a shame that those mechanics are stuck in these **** games. Kojima is the biggest hack in the entire industry.

Hideo Kojima's PS1 masterpiece is a sequel to the NES game "Metal Gear". It is arguably the best action title on Sony's first console. The cinematic presentation and gameplay were groundbreaking and pushed the system to its limits. An interactive equivalent of a Hollywood blockbuster, MGS paid homage to "Escape from New York", James Bond and Rambo. While it's very dated, "Metal Gear Solid" is still a must play for stealth action fans. I would rate it with a 10 out of 10
