Spider-Man 2 is what we want from a sequel, a much better story building on the foundations that the previous versions built, improving the gameplay in every possible way while the previous games are already among the best in terms of gameplay, using all the PS5’s powers and turning the game into a completely next-gen game, next-gen visuals, extraordinary and non-repetitive level design, deep characterization at the disposal of the story, use of dualsense’s features, much more entertaining boss fights, much better cutscenes and much better animations.

It doesn't matter that the second Spider-Man doesn't really move the gameplay forward and offers, with a few variations, just another helping of what worked in the previous two games. But in this case, we're really talking about excellence, so any experimentation and novelty could lead to disappointment. [Issue#331]

For the most part a thrilling story with fist-pumping missions. New mechanics are a mixed bag – but it’s still one of the best superhero things ever. [Issue#34, p.74]

Summary: Spider-Man 2 is much like a block buster action movie; Even though it’s obviously some of the best craftsmanship in Hollywood, and it’s undeniably entertaining, it just doesn’t connect with me emotionally and therefore it’s ultimately deemed forgettable even though it was a good experience. Notes: Visually stunning environments and graphically top notch looking characters. Great animations as well. Audio design is wonderfully crafted, both design wise and functionally. The amazing, game changing stuff we take for granted from last game; traversal, zippyness in combat, etc, is just as awesome as last time. The narrative is well written and probably great for a younger audience, but too childish for an adult, which is fair enough given that it is Spider-Man... It made me distance myself from the game, like I didn’t wanna be associated with it. But Spider-Man’s witty comic book gags really work though, good writing there. Voice acting is also absolutely top notch throughout. Combat took a couple of hours to get into. Too many moves, upgrades, skills, and status bars, felt overwhelming. Combat is also ”imprecise” in that it’s difficult to actively select an enemy to attack. I just end up mashing buttons sending Spider-Man flying all over the place beating people up. Super fun at times, but I don’t really feel like I know what I’m doing and it’s just messy. 10 hours in I understood all the systems better which improved my experience a lot. During the final bossfights of the game, combat mostly consisted of using my EIGHT special abilities, managing their cooldowns, which to me isn’t ideal. The general idea of the combat is undeniably entertaining but personally I’d like it to be a touch more controlled and focused, Respawns Jedi series is a good example of that. The stealth parts are a bit too easy to exploit by just waiting for the enemy to suddenly turn into prey for seemingly no reason. The web line mechanic is also too advantageous. I wish it was constructed more like a puzzle.

Full of emotional highs that will make you get out of your chair and cheer at the screen in a way that few games have managed to achieve in recent memory, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 represents Insomniac Games operating at the apex of its considerable powers. Spectacular and amazing, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a superior, spectacle stuffed action adventure that provides players with the ultimate superhero fantasy. Full of surprising heart and delicate moments that balance beautifully with the sort of blockbuster superhero bombast that its developer has refined to a fine art, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a toweringly polished, unparalleled masterwork that redefines the superhero video game genre at large and is better than the previous two games in every way imaginable. This is exactly what you've been waiting for.

A practically complete sequel that improves almost everything it can improve and offers us the best Spider-Man video game and one of the best superhero video games in history. Outstanding in every way, pampering both the main and the secondary and that will surely leave us wanting more.

Worth Playing
Marvel's Spider-Man 2 is a great sequel to a great game. It's bigger and more focused, and it captures everything that made the first game work. From start to finish, it is as fun to play as its predecessor, and if it has one "flaw," it is that you're getting exactly what you'd expect. I can't get enough of the game, so when I completed it, I instantly set out to finish all of the challenges. Kudos to the development team.

This is an amazing fantasy come to life and realised like never before. Insomniac Games has crafted yet another heartfelt Spider-Man story bursting with twists, turns, and show-stopping spectacle. While I wish it had taken a few more risks in changing up its open-world formula, it’s tricky to remember those criticisms when I’m diving from the top of the Empire State Building and firing out a web line at the last second as I swing away in search of ass to kick.

Spider-Man 2 made me feel like the web-slinger himself – two versions of him, in fact – as I played through the game. I loved the feeling of getting around the city, fighting crime and saving the day. I didn't like how weak Spider-Man sometimes felt against bigger groups, nor did I like when the story slowed things down and took me away from the high-flying action sections. However, the overall experience was able to surpass both of these issues, and Spider-Man 2 is worthy of every accolade it receives.

Even if these faults are eventually fixed in an upcoming patch, it’s clear that this game should not have been released in its current inexcusable state. It’s a shame because, critiques aside, there’s a genuinely addictive gameplay loop here that I’m sure I would have found more compelling if there was stability. Ultimately, bugs are not guaranteed in everyone’s playthroughs, so you may get lucky. But I do recommend being aware of these potential problems and making backup saves should something go awry.

Once more, after the first game, which I dropped for exactly the same reason, I'm forced to play through snail paced missions, which are the antithesis of what a superhero game should be about. What is so hard about understanding that I don't want to play Mary-Jane 2, but Spider-Man 2? Not only that, but we also now have Harry missions! Just walk around really slowly and waste half an hour of your life for what should have been a 2-minute (skippable!!!) cutscene. I'm giving the game a generous 4/10 instead of what it ACTUALLY deserves (0/10 for wasting my time and annoying me), because the parts I was allowed to play as Spider-Man were fun, even if simply an inferior copy of Batman Arkham series.
