This is a very boring and bad game, and the worst sporting spinoff in the Mario franchise. The features are boring, and not even the Mega Mushroom gimmick is fun. Plus, many characters we love, such as Diddy Kong or Bowser Jr., aren’t on here. At least it does have Dry Bowser, but still. I’d rather play Mario Power Tennis on the GameCube or Mario Tennis Aces on the Switch instead.

This is pretty much an E3 demo that was $50 when this game came out. The modes are pretty much the exact same thing with the only change being that you either get Mega Mushrooms or you have to rally a big tennis ball back and forth. Plus, the stadium also have no unique gimmicks or themes since it’s pretty much the same court but with the textures changed. It’s one of the most lazy Mario sports games Nintendo has ever put out and I would not recommend this game at all.

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash is a visually stunning game, but its immediately noticeable lack of content left me wondering “Is this it?” If you’ve played any of the previous versions like Mario Tennis on Nintendo 64, the RPG lite Mario Tennis on GameBoy Color, or even the quirky Mario Power Tennis for the Gamecube, you’ll come in expecting something new and interesting that builds on top of the already compelling franchise. Unfortunately, other than the brilliant colors and cool effects we come to expect from Nintendo, Ultra Smash lacks enough playable characters, modes, or a rewarding progression to justify playing over older versions. Mega Battle is the only new mode where Toad randomly throws Mega Mushrooms onto the court. These oversized mushrooms cause your character to get bigger and minimally increase their stats for longer than you’d expect. It’s an interesting idea on the surface that fits the Mario theme, but ultimately it was more annoying than I expected it to be. The larger character blocks the view of the court and the short animation sequence caused me to lose track of the ball more times than I’d like to admit. You’ll earn some coins at the end of each activity much like Mario Kart 8, but these coins can only be used to bypass unlock conditions for any of the 25 generic rewards. If Mega Battle isn’t your thing, there's still Singles or Doubles in Classic Tennis which is just basic tennis without the mushrooms. Knockout Challenge lets you train an AI amiibo partner by increasing their stats every 5 matches, though I couldn’t tell any difference in their performance. The AI character still regularly missed volleys or hit me in the back with the ball. If you don’t have an amiibo of each character, the only point here is to win 15 consecutive matches to unlock a Star version of a character. Or, you can just buy the unlock for 5,000 coins. Star characters felt identical to non-star and I couldn’t find any in-game information that explained what made Star Mario different from base Mario. Mega Ball Rally is the only other new minigame and is centered solely around how long you can volley a beach ball back and forth until someone makes a mistake. The ball gets smaller every 30 volleys and exponentially increases your coin reward the longer the game goes on — and that’s it. Online servers were shut down for the Wii U in April of 2024 so I couldn’t give matchmaking a shot, but it appears that the only options were causal or ranked. You couldn’t even set up an online match with a friend which is pretty disappointing. One of the few positives here, the Wii U GamePad continues to prove its worth as the best part of this console. I chose the GamePad as the main play screen while the TV showed camera angles akin to watching a real tennis match on ESPN. This worked great for streaming and I would think it would be fun to play a few matches with multiple GamePads while onlookers enjoyed the dynamic camera shots on the main screen. Final Verdict Omitting a story mode and a lackluster rewards system gave me little reason to come back and play more. The Mega Battle and Mega Ball Rally lost their shine quickly and I’ve played enough Classic Tennis in the past. Online mode may have been fun for a bit, and without servers to host games, I don’t feel like I’m missing much either way. Knockout mode is probably the most captivating to me as it briefly reminded me of grinding levels for Nina and Alex in the GBC Mario Tennis. Needing every amiibo to get the most of it or just buying the rewards hobbles the replayability quickly. Sadly, Ultra Smash is an uninspired step backward for Mario Tennis and worth skipping over or simply returning to previous versions. Rating 5/10 Mediocore Review by Thomas Bisom | @darkshadows61

Mario Tennis Ultra Smash? More like Mario Tennis Ultra As*. This one of the worst game ever and it does not help that it is on the Wii U. Don't buy it, Don't waste $60.

This game is an underrated gem, people hate it for lack of content, but honestly I like everything included in this game. I found the core gameplay in this game more fun than Aces. The mega mushroom gimmick was fun to play around with, and mega ball rally is really fun to kill time in.

I have to consider it my favorite Mario game of the entire Wii U catalog. We have to be thankful that at least Nintendo gave us a Mario Tennis for the Wii U. I would give it a 6/10 for the material on the disc but this game makes for a fun and relaxing time. I even really enjoy collecting 🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙🪙coins and the Knockout mode is a good challenge to beat all the characters in a Match Tennis at the Marina Stadium. a good game for gamers who care about a record to have a fun time!!

This might just be one of the most boring games I have ever played, I bought it thinking i was gonna a great time looking at the nice box art and stunning graphics. Eventually, after playing it I'd rather clean up cow **** One of the most advertised things about this game is Mega Battle and when you get the Mega Mushroom the other player will also get one making it useless and dull. I played one of the other game modes Mega Ball Rally where you hit a ball as much as you can before it starts to shrink, and again I felt no enjoyment. I would talk about other things but that's it, this game has two other game modes one being amiibo. But why I have amiibo's. Then i tried playing Online, good luck with that because knowone has played this game in years. This game is trash don't buy it

So barebones in content and boring as hell, for $50? Terrible considering how much effort and content there was in previous Mario Tennis installments. Nintendo and Camelot, please do better.

Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash suffers from its content much too weak for a tennis game (roster below, online limit). Lack of ambition for the license and in 2015 despite beautiful graphics.

The game itself is not that vast but when you play it with someone like a friend it becomes a great experience, but it's really sad to see that the game is mediocre in it's content.

This game is a tennis game made on probably a really tight budget since all it is, is a tennis game with a mega mushroom which doesn’t even do much. It looks nice though.

This game is a shining example of how NOT to do a Mario Tennis game. It's so lacking in content that it really shows how fast Nintendo was just trying to rush it out for the sake of sales. All the stages are the exact same in size and functions, doing nothing different from level to level than a normal tennis court. There's absolutely NO special moves other than becoming giant, which A., is completely unoriginal and boring, and B., is oh so extremely lazy. Rather than program in numerous different specials for different characters, they'd rather there be one with little to no substance. The online is next to dead of course, with no one having been on, even AT release. Overall, this game is just a shameless cash grab from Nintendo with no care or effort put into giving it substantial content. If you want a tennis game done RIGHT, go play Sega Superstars Tennis for the DS.

I gotta say that this game was not worth $60. Most characters don't have special outfits, the knockout challenge is the worst mode in the game. There's always the one regular stadium to play on which ****. On the Upside, the graphics aren't too bad. They were a slight improvement to the last Tennis game. But, there's 4 things I should address:1. Do not play a heavyweight. 2. Do not pick the sand court or the mushroom court. **** not use a Wii Remote. 4. Do not play any mode except Classic Tennis, because the other ones are bullcrap. This is the worst WiiU game, and it will stay that way.

This game is just empty. There are few game modes which are either boring or too short. The only thing this game has going for it is the amino functionality which is actually quite useful for once. This game has no replay value and I have no wish to return to this game whatsoever. This game simply feels rushed.

Graphics: 7.5 Sound: 7 Gameplay: 8 Fun/Story: 7.2 Nintendo´s old game of N64 with some refreshment but lacks of innovate ideas and deeper gameplay. Some Nintendo´s franchises are not going in good direction due the repetition sensation.

This game is okay. Not as good as some of the previous ones but still good. For some reason, Mario Tennis Ultra Smash feels...a little rushed. I really don't know if Nintendo was trying to do. Maybe they wanted to release early? The character selection is good. The graphics are okay for the Wii U. The controls are okay but I can screw up at times. The courts are simple but fun. Mario Tennis Ultra Smash isn't the best Mario Sports Games (The GameCube and Wii ones I enjoy more) but I'd say it's worth getting ONLY if it is $40 or less. I think $50 is a bit too much for this title. Months ago, I was lucky enough to find it for $30, which is what the price SHOULD be. As of this review, I play it quite a bit these days. I'd say it's a fun game.

The core mechanics of Mario Tennis have potential but there is simply not enough here to justify more than a few hours of entertainment. I can't recall ever seeing such a light return investment on a full priced game.

Solo dire que es entretenido en los ratos libres o con los amigos por un rato igual. Pocas modalidades de juego. Y pocos personajes y dificultad floja.

No settings? Mario tennis ultra smash gets to much hate the game has many new things like amiibos mega mushrooms and even jump shoots! And you can even play old school mario tennis when turning off chance shoots! Mario tennis ultra smash maybe don't have a tourment mode it has instead knockout challenge which is also very fun try it out! The next thing is online which is the only reason it got a 9 you can't play with friends only local but it's okey mario tennis has always been most fun playing local with 4 friends anyway but it would be nice. Next thing is dlc it's likely gonna happen cuz the game has updates. Mario tennis ultra smash is a good game and you should definely get it! 9/10

The core of this game is very solid: it's a fluid tennis game. I don't think many can argue with that. The character roster was acceptable, if not a little small. Novice players can easily jump in with the automatic shot feature, and more experienced gamers have the depth of shot selection. So, yes, the core is very strong. However, that's the only thing it has. It's like Nintendo baked an excellent cake, but then forgot to frost it. The game modes are shallow at best, and there could have been one or two more characters at the least. The lack of motion controls is frankly baffling, as well. The Mega Mushrooms are interesting for a little while, but soon become fairly dull. If you're going to use power-ups, there should be some variety. As a stand-alone game, it's a decent (though not excellent) purchase. As a Mario Tennis game, it lacks some of the fun of previous titles.

I hate to give a Mario Tennis game such a low score as Tennis is only one of two Mario spinoffs I have enjoyed for decades (the other being Mario Kart). However, this game isn't worth anything higher than a 4 due to extreme lack of content, limited modes, and shoddy online and coop gameplay. The game is mechanically sound but c'mon, it's TENNIS. In the history of video games, tennis is what started it all so if the game was NOT mechanically sound I'd be disappointed. Graphically yes, it looks good but it's the typical graphical stylings of the Mario games which means it would look very similar on the 3DS (and, in fact does when compared to Mario Tennis Open from 2012). Graphics and mechanically sound core gameplay alone is not worth a full retail AAA-studio price tag. It's not even worth the recently reduced-by-$10 price tag. I strongly encourage anyone interested to do what I did: rent it, spend a couple days playing it, then return it to your nearest Redbox or Gamefly. You'll see everything the game has to offer and be tired of playing it after only a few hours. I give it a 4 for being competent in graphics and core gameplay but the lack of content and almost non-existent replay value keeps the game from being worth any more. If you have a 3DS, buy Mario Tennis Open. It's not the greatest but it's ten-fold better than this in terms of replay value. If you don't have a 3DS and want a Mario Tennis game, buy one of the Wii U's virtual console offerings.

Boooo! This isnt anywhere near as good as Mario Power Tennis! (which i still play on my trusty GameCube) As others have said, it just feels...empty, shallow, lazy. Call it what you will, but it really isn't fun. If you REALLY want a Mario tennis game, id recommend buying a GameCube and finding a copy of Mario Power Tennis, both are cheap now, and i guarantee you'll have more fun! :)

As an Xbox gamer, I give Nintendo deserved props, Gamexplain previews had a bit of slanted misinformation (catering to a "nerdier" Nintendo “fan” which frowns upon games considered too "mainstream", so variety or party games get shafted.) Ultra Smash isn't ‘barebones’; it has a decent amount of activities, even local and free online multiplayer ranked modes. Ultra Smash has 3 minigame/alternative modes, while streamlined, most complaints were nitpicks copy/pasted from one outlets clickbait preview. Other games had more minigames (con), but weren’t as tightly woven into the core game as it is within this game (pro). With classic simple mode, there’s technically 4 minigames. The gimmicks courts include Ice, Sand, Pink Fast Court, Mushoom Bounce, Morph, Arrows). The Mushoom mode is one of the core minigames and is based around the risk/reward factor of a mushroom that makes your character giant and more powerful briefly. Items shots return as chance shots featured in Standard Classic mode, featured on the main menu. This features longer matches of doubles / singles, with No Megamushrooms. This is a great place to practice the core elements of the game, as Knockout Challenge will require you to understand this: you can't always rely on the Mega Mushroom advantage. KnockOut Challenge is the core single player mode, Ultra’s reworking of Smash Bros 4's single player mode with elements of crazy hand modes, a money earning system used as you advance through an endless stream of challenging players. The courts and skill required steadily increase with extreme difficulty. Once you hit 14 or so wins, you face an overpowered boss character with extra abilities. It is based around chance shots, and mega battle mushrooms. This mode will eventually provide you with opponents with star skill advantages over your character. Save coins for rematches! This doesn't include cutscenes, cups like its predecessors (or stadium aesthetics), however these are Nitpicks. Being real: this doesn’t take much away from the game. Cups are replaced with rackets which are presented to you when you lose a match (each represents a win. You can use your money to retry matches or spend on unlockables (which can be achieved or paid for through the “Challenge List”) Achieving is more rewarding. Mega Ball Rally is based around a floaty basketball : moves slow, then faster as it decreases in size. Whether you win or lose, you gain extra points for keeping the ball going. Winning is easier in singles games, however is challenging on gimmick courts. Classic Simple mode is a tribute to MarioTennis64, which removes almost all techniques except y-button power shots. (No chance, mushroom, charge or jump shots). Amiibo training is a pokemon style training minigame and can drop in/out at any time. You can unlock custom skills from The Challenge List. Cons: No ‘Friend’ list, some occasional minor lag, Could have slightly emphasised more on the importance of return charge shots and the choice of return shots to lessen effects of chance shots (whether purple or blue). But players will learn.

I really enjoyed this game. I found it fun, although it was my first Mario sports title I have played. I enjoyed the tricky types the most, as to me, they were the easiest to play as. Bowser Jr. and Boo are at the #1 spot on my list of favorite characters. Toad/Toadette share the same move set, but are different types! I love how Nintendo pulled that off seamlessly. My vote would be a 9.7/10, but the closest thing is 10/10, so I'll give it that.

I really wanted to buy this game. Looked cool from the trailer and all but the game itself has no "special effects" as in super powers. It's as if they wanted to make it more tennis like. This game was very dull/boring and I wouldn't recommend buying it unless your into that kind of stuff. I enjoy it of course because it does have very cool graphics and a nice concept but the over-all game isn't as fun as Mario Power Tennis. I really do hope they sell an new version or at least create an update

Really wanted to like this game as I love the Mario sports titles, but this version is strictly a bare bones, phoned-in stopgag so there is something new on the shelves for Christmas. Basic core gameplay is solid, graphics are beautiful, but a severe lack of gameplay modes, courts, character variety and even basic online friend matchmaking hinders this title before it even gets out of the gate.
