Legend Bowl is a game with some strengths and just as many flaws. Its retro look is exquisite, but the gameplay has some issues that can cause a certain sense of annoyance and frustration.

Legend Bowl is well meaning enough with a fair stab at the Madden games of yore. Just don’t mention the kicking mechanics. They’re awfully implemented and will lead to you being on the back foot in matches rather more often than you’d like. The extensive franchise mode and pixelised gridiron are fun enough, but our frustration at the kicking meant we found Legend Bowl whiffed wide right rather than being on target.

Whether you are looking for a quick game with friends or looking to study a screen full of statistics like it was Money Ball, this is a jam-packed football experience crammed full of content, customization, and engaging gameplay. If you’re burnt out on the bigger offerings and their micro-transactions, then Legend Bowl is a sports game with plenty of value.

Back then, I wanted to support Maximum Football 2019 to stick it to madden. Unfortunately the game stunk! Made me lose faith in indie sports devs...until now. Saw Legend Bowl advertised on the playstation store but was hesitant after getting burned by Maximum Football. After doing research on the people involved I decided to give it a shot. I was not disappointed! We need more sports games like Legend Bowl. Not perfect but would rather play this than the newest madden!

It’s a pity, then, that the football part of Legend Bowl is so underwhelming. The ideas here are good, and the developers deserve credit for making a game that feels both modern and retro at the same time, but if you’re looking for a football game where you’ll actually want to play the on-field game, this isn’t it.
