“Babyface isn’t even that bad, f*** the critics.” Layers of Fear is a Haunted House romp in the key of House of Leaves with inspiration drawn from The Picture of Dorian Gray among others beyond my artistic grasp. The player spends their time walking through the impossible, ever-shifting geometry of the manor, contending with the protagonists psychosis while uncovering the history of his family and the tragedy therein. All while attempting to complete his magnum opus. On the pantheon of psycho-horror walking sims, Layers of Fear deserves a place, but perhaps on a lower rung. It’s not perfect - fatty around the edges, short in its list of spooky-tricks. Still, it’s a theme park ride I would recommend, at least once. Presentation and atmosphere are what excels for as long as the player is enthralled by its spell. Exploring the manors surreal spaces, uncovering clues to the past - there’s a good story being told well here. Thematically, the world, and narrative make a nice tight knot. Voice performances are solid, and music, when used, is beautiful and effective. Gameplay consists of walking, opening containers and collecting notes. Occasionally a simple puzzle will rear its head. It’s not noteworthy, nor should it be for the genre Layers of Fear aims for. The term “walking-sim” is not an immediate death sentence for me. However I was a bit dismayed at the ratio of opened containers to missing notes by the end of the game. I think the games length is its primary flaw. Layers of Fear eventually runs out of new spooks, and the story is so revealed as to piece together the full narrative well before the climactic ending. With no additional twists, in either gameplay or story, the game begins to outstay its welcome. A problem which perplexes me, as the game asks you to double-down and play it again, making obscure choices, in order to reach a “true”, “conclusive” ending. Imagine going through a haunted house attraction and then immediately going back in a second time, with none of the scares changed. With a game that is so singularly focused in setting and theme, I think slicing an hour off would be to its benefit, as well as nixing the multiple endings. Make it more concise. Keep the magic from running out early. I dare say the Inheritance DLC is an all around upgrade compared to the main game. It serves as both a new perspective and an epilogue. Some of the scares are familiar but the presentation, its setting, its use of the main cast, are all excellent and kept me hooked. A combination of presentation and shortened length ensured I remained interested, avoiding my aforementioned problems with the base game. Additionally there’s a Halloween season specific mini-episode of content that exists in the Basement. I had no idea and unintentionally stumbled into this bit. Another fun bite-sized vignette which strengthens my belief that the shorter these pieces are, the more enjoyable they become. The more pure they stay in my memory. On the whole, Layers of Fear is a haunted house theme park ride. A solid ride but one that lasts maybe a bit too long, spread a bit too thin. But theres a lot of good at its core and I look forward to experiencing the next Bloober project whenever I get around to it. If The Inheritance DLC is any indicator of their new direction, then I won’t be disappointed. A play-it-once enjoyable 7 out of 10

The biggest plus i found playing in this game in 2024 was great audio experience. I highly recommend to play with headphones. I don’t like that type of games, but that one had something.

The Masterpiece Edition includes both the base game and the DLC "Inheritance". The DLC is about an hour long and features two endings. In it, you play as the daughter of the protagonist from the base game. It serves as an epilogue to the events of "Layers". Overall, I would rate this with 7.4 out of 10.

I'm not a fan of horror games and when I started this game I thought I wouldn't finish it. However, it turned out that Layers of Fear is a walking simulator and the story itself is not interesting and does not stay in the player's memory for long.

Podre.

An effort in emulating P. T. that ultimately ends up being a walking simulator with average or below average scares. Of course P. T. was a walking simulator, too, but it was way more original... and also it was meant to be a playable teaser, not a published game you actually had to pay in order to play. Putting this aside, the game offers nothing aside a decent ambient/atmosphere and an over-the-top, pretentious narration. This game is nothing special but thinks it is. The main form of narration is through flashback voices, documents, paintings, drawings and sketches, but sometimes it forces the narration through these means. The result is that some of the sketches and letters appear to be far-fetched and cringe. I don't even know if this can be considered to be a game since all you have to do is to walk. It is an interactive experience -- and not a particularly brilliant or compelling one. Also the depiction of mental illness leaves much to be desired: that's not what actual mental illness is... trust me on this, I'm a psychologist. All things considered, a forgettable experience. Not horrible but surely nothing worth of mentioning.

Don't understand the hype about this game. Terrible game. I like walking simulators, but this one is far away from being interesting.

Appeal to the Bloober Team. It is necessary to separate people and their creations, so here - I liked the game, but for populist, hype and most stupid choice of position Bloober Team put a disliked. And as you know, every choice has consequences. If you think you'll come back and you'll be expected here, no.

Layers of Fear, more of a suspense game with jumpscare than a horror game in itself, is based on that formula already used by many other games nowadays, first person, where you can only walk without defending yourself. The game is based on events from the protagonist's past, and the game is practically a "rail shooter" in horror format (and without the shooting) with some puzzles along the way, the focus really, is the story behind the game. Your choices during these steps also define aspects of the upcoming rooms, history and so on. The ambiance is cool, the audio also with the squeak of the house, the rain and the voices are OK. Some challenges in the game can be boring for those who want to 100%, such as "staying 1 hour looking at pictures". Nothing special, but it's not to be thrown away either, if it's on a promotion, it's worth it. There is a "sequence" by DLC Inheritance

Great horror game, Amazing visuals, super creepy and unique atmosphere. I would have like if they had puzzles or something to get your mind working. The game was pretty linear and the dlc was mediocre. The game itself was short, about 3-4 hours to complete, and the dlc very short-20-30 min. If you are a fan of the genre then you should try to get this on sale.

Layers of Fear is a mediocre to the decent psychological horror-themed walking simulator with some minor vague storytelling and a sole gameplay mechanic of item browsing. Be aware going into this game jump scares are frequent, and that Layers Of Fear is lacking in core game mechanics. Any engagement or investment into the characters and story falls flat on both. The story is difficult to piece together and is a bit dry and boring albeit unique compared to Amnesia, Penumbra, and Soma. Layers Of Fear is visually beautiful, one of the best visually attractive modern horror games comparable to Red Barrels Outlast and the visuals of Resident Evil 7. The setting of Layers Of Fear distinguishes it from modern games similar to Amnesia. But unlike Amnesia which has puzzles to be solved and a physics engine that is actually used, a linear story with enough mystery and intrigue to keep the player interested, browsing mechanics that are actually utilized, and common enemies this game has none of these except for the browsing mechanic. Because of this lack of game in the game the overall experience is a bit sterile. The biggest draw is the trippy screen effects employed but everything feels very scripted and gamey. At the same time, there's an absence of game mechanics that makes Layers of Fear feel rather artsy and thematic like Firewatch this places Layers Of Fear squarely in the walking simulator genre. it relies too much on shaky metaphor and not much else. The sound design is great apart from some dodgy voice acting, overall it's a polished Unity engine first-person walking simulator. It doesn't warrant the full price tag but it's not awful, just disappointing. If you appreciate walking simulators like Dear Esther and the visuals of games it may be worth a purchase.

There is a reason why I don't play games like this, and I know why now. All it really is, is a walking simulator. Exploring is not really a part of the game. You explore, and hit a dead end. Then, you go to where the game wants you to go. You do interact with objects, and other parts of the world, but you just head in one linear direction. The game is not even that scary. I jumped more in Rainbow Six Siege, than this game. I guess you could say it was creepy, but that's about it. The ending was just not satisfying as the game never comes out to explain the story either, you can only gather hints while playing through. I guess it makes sense for a game like this, but I was completely lost at what happened to this guy. I am glad I got this for free, paying for this walking simulator is a rip off.

This is game actually has no set goal and basically just consists of walking around and perceiving the atmosphere. There are some minimal puzzles, and at the end you get told how much you missed. This sounds boring, and it is, but less so than you would think. I suppose this could have been a great game if they had taken a cue from genre role models.

This game is like reading a good horror book. I suggest you have a free afternoon with time also to continue through the night if need be,but the game is around 3 hours, maybe 4 if you look at everything and I mean EVERYTHING. Gameplay wise it doesnt have lots to do,so that will probably push people away that seek something in terms of Resident Evil with a bit more action but for fans of the psychological side of horror it's a must play I think. The music is phenomenal and the house is pretty fun to walk around. As the story unfolds, the house gets more and more disoriented and destroyed just like the protagonist's psyche and maybe the players. It has 3 different endings, each appropriate to the story, something that is rare. Again it is pretty short though...

Gives Amnesia: The Dark Descent vibes. Very well made and enjoyable. You'll like it if you're fan of horror genre. I wasn't disappointed at all, but still not the best game in my opinion.

Was a decent horror game with a tense atmosphere. It is more likely a walking simulator with a bunch of jumpscares in a tense environment than a real horror game. I would recommend it to any horror fan as these kind of projects should be supported for further development.

The words to describe the game are all too repetitive at this point. To put it simply, this is a great game to experience. The game is focused on the dark and melancholy, but there is dark humor to be found as well. While certain achievements can become a bit tedious to acquire, playing without caring about achievements is the best way to experience this game. Make sure that you read all of the notes that you pass to be able to enjoy the story to the fullest, as this is a story driven game with options based on you understanding what is happening up to that point. This is not a mindless go get 'em game, which makes this well worth the value of the game and more in my opinion.

Walking sim horror game that has pretty nice visuals & audio. There's some really neat physics involved. However, walking sims really need to provide a strong story and sadly they failed to do that. At first it seemed that they were on to something really deep and interesting but it just faded off and became nothing. I'd say it's okay but it could be so much more.

pros: - looks good - decent soundtrack cons: - even though it looks good, there are glitches - confusing plotline - relying too much of jumpscares - no puzzles whatsoever - got too lost many times - most boring gameplay but if you ever got scared one of the sequences in this game, kudos to you but i just had an emotionless experience within this game so thank you, Layers of Fear for not giving me an adrenaline rush xoxo

So, this game is not scary. It tries to affect your psychological health but after 1 hour playing this game, you begin to accustom to this atmosphere. Also, it tries to scare you by some screamers and a lot of fast running models. you're not afraid to play it. Perhaps a couple of times you will jump out of your chair, not from fear, but from surprise. I`ve completed a lot of horror games and I am sure, that this game can not be scary. In the conclusion, I want to say that I recommend playing this game only if you want to feel something unusual, but this feeling will end in 1-2 hours of gameplay.

In this game you just go forward through corridors, open doors, turn around. Rinse and repeat. Almost no puzzles, nothing. Sometimes, the game's so dark you'll find yourself turning up the brightness just to later turn it down. Wasted 4 hours.

Layers of Fear's excellent art and sound design is too often poorly accompanied by the lack of stake, resulting in an average horror experience that could have been more.

So this game was top rated in steam, what the hell I can't see what the fuss is all about, it's just a linear walkiing simulator filled with jumpscares and a somewhat interesting story. Other than that... You're pretty much off ****.

Let's cut the crap and get straight to it: this game is massively overvalued. The story is cookie-cutter and predictable. The atmosphere becomes dull within the first half-hour. The game play is stale. I'm not entirely sure why the larger gaming community looks favorably upon this game. To start, "Walking simulators" are games which I have always tried to give the benefit of the doubt. That is because they often evoke a strong mood or rely on robust writing to make-up for their lacking game play. Some manage this formula to great effect and successfully immerse the player in the game world -- e.g. What Remains of Edith Finch. Yet, Layers of Fear has none of these qualities. It is a haunted house affair that wants you to mindlessly enter room after room, gasping "OH MY GOD THAT LOOKS SO WEIRD!" in your best Twitch streamer voice about a hundred times. I'm not even joking with that number. It is the same game play loop: enter a room, be unsettled by something, repeat. This goes on for a mind-numbingly long time. It was as if the developers consisted of about 50 artists and animators that each wanted to showcase their skills and one part-time writer. I'm sorry, but that is not stimulating game play. It honestly seems like an incoherent, jumbled mess of a "horror" tech demo more than a game.

LAYERS OF FEAR great example of psychedelic horror game. The key feature of the game it's how it playing with your mind, all this smooth transitions between rooms in this strange house can bring you a thought who was an architect of this?=D What about story ? it s story about mad artist and how he trying to finish his masterpiece, and how he start see world around him while he trying to finish. You as player see all this by first person on behalf of the artist. What about horror? game trying to scary you in different ways, as for me its no so scary but story line more than covers this disadvantage.

Picture this 3/5 • LAYERS OF FEAR is a claustrophobic little chiller. It relies a little too much on jump scares, but it does also succeed in creating a fairly compelling air of creepiness and dread. The story lacks originality but the structure of the game is unusual and the incorporated puzzles are simple and yet inventive. The graphics are excellent and the limited environments are used to good effect, although it’s a shame that you remain confined to the house throughout the game – I would have liked a little variety to the setting. Overall it’s enjoyable without being remarkable, but at just 4 hours long (unless you replay to explore different options, which is possible to some extent) I think it best bought in a sale. Good, but not great.

Layers of Fear is psychedelic bone chilling haunting experience **** with amazing visuals (and it was build using the Unity engine). and a well executed premise. Despite of being short the game manage to be chilling at every second... every corner, every corridor will make you unease thank to it's sound design that will totally emerge you into this world inhabit by a mad artist. Still... the gameplay is way to simple for being a walk simulator in which you can interact with the environment to add immersion into the game. Yeah... the game contains a few jump scares but as the rest of the game it's spooky by it's own i really didn't mind this jump scares sequences. If you love horror and you wish to give yourself a treat, this is the game for you.

It's a horror walking simulator. You can't fail, but it's still scary because you don't know what's going to happen. The story is generic but strongly realized, and the graphics are detailed and immersive. It took me a long time to get around to playing this game, but I will definitely try the devs' other similar games.
