Guns of Icarus Alliance works as a competitive multiplayer game still. It offers a unique steampunk setting with ship battles that are highly intensive and a lot of fun when you get a good lobby of people together. But with an annual player count of 80 to 200 players, newcomers should be prepared to prep themselves with tutorials and PVE content.

Guns of Icarus is a hell of a lot of fun when playing online because of the required teamwork. There's plenty of ships to choose from which provides some highly needed variation. Audio-visually the game is a letdown and the AI is very dumb. The game also suffers from plenty of bugs that really need fixing sometime soon if you want to keep enjoying it. Apart from these gripes however, the game is still pretty entertaining.

Guns of Icarus is the kind of game you might fall in love with if you go in with a team of pals, but if you go in alone you might spend a bit too much time waiting for other players and dealing with AI to be too besotted. It's a game that has so much potential, but will likely need a much wider playerbase to reach that point.

-Quick Review-Guns of Icarus is a Team-based steampunk themed first-person shooting game, where you play as either an Engineer who repairs stuff, Gunner who shoots stuff, or a Pilot who directs your airship. Guns of Icarus Online was developed by Muse Games and released in 2012, Guns of Icarus Alliance was released in 2017 and added a PvE mode (previously Guns of Icarus was only PvP), and added in factions, and some new airships! -Detailed breakdown review-Story: When I played Guns of Icarus Online, I thought originally the story was simply “You’re living your best life as a Career Engineer/Gunner/Pilot who is fighting in a perpetual war” … Actually, the dev’s probably had some long explanation about a war which destroyed humanity and collections of civilization’s clustered together to build airships to take to the sky and battle for dominance… because after all human beings are nothing, if not predictably self-destructive?I’m not sure where people are finding “Lore” for Guns of Icarus, there’s some stuff on the Wiki (but I dunno where that comes from), and on reddit I was reading most of the lore comes from Map Descriptions. Gameplay: Where to start with Guns Of Icarus Gameplay… First, you’ll make an account (It’s been so long since I did that, I forgot you needed to do it), then you should play the first Engineer Tutorial… I’d definitely advise giving all the tutorials a shot, especially if you’re planning on being a pilot. I don’t remember there being a tutorial when I first played, I remember learning by making Practice games and trying out weapons and airships there.Next, you’ll need to select your starting class… but unlike picking your starter pokemon you can switch between them at will. Engineer and Gunner are recommended for beginners because they have the most straightforward roles… but I’d add weight to learning how to Engineer as it’s the most beginner friendly role because you normally double up on Engineers.Next you decide if you want to play PvP or PvE… back in the day we had to walk up hill to school, both ways… An’ we didn’t got no fangled PvE option. Now there is a PvE mode, you should learn the game against AI controlled airships! You can make your own match and even sail with an AI controlled crew, or you can wrangle up 3 friends and play together the way the game was **** is definitely fun, and the next level experience for Guns of Icarus… but the people who know what they’re doing will DOMINATE the game, and everyone else will spend a lot of time respawning. Not to discourage you from it, definitely give it a shot… but you’re less likely to see PVP games going unless they’re hosted by the community events, or by clans. But as long as you have two people willing to be captains, you can make a PvP Game! Conclusion: Guns of Icarus Alliance is great! It enables me to play the game by myself at the worst… and at the best I can drag friends into this great team building exercise! Depending on what class you play as there are tiered difficulties and complexities, definitely start out as an Engineer or Gunner while you learn the game. Then maybe take the next step and try piloting!I said in my old Guns of Icarus Online review that the game is designed to be played for a long time, easily wracking up hundreds of hours of play time. I wish there were more people playing this game actively so we would have more PvE and PvP matches going. However Guns of Icarus Online would be harder to recommend due to its dependence on having enough people around to fill up two ships, it’s far easier to fill up one ship, or just make your own match and have people drop in to join your crew.Hopefully my review was helpful. I'm limited in text format just how long I can make these reviews, but in video format I can cover so much more, so I’d like to footstomp checking out my video review, anyway. Thanks either way for taking the time to read this review. …There's more to the review... If you want to know more, please check out my YouTube Video.

It's a good game, it's hard to learn, but if you get into it the concept of the game is good. The problem is, there is only online game mode, there is no single player, and the community is dead. There is not much info about caste in the tutorial.

An enjoyable -- if rough around the edges -- coop multiplayer experience. Guns of Icarus is not a game for everyone. I would only recommend if you are interested in PvP. There is a PvE component, but I did not find it very compelling mainly due to poor enemy ship AI. But for those looking for competitive multiplayer, Guns of Icarus shines. It is a team game that rewards knowledge and cooperation. Some will find the gameplay tedious, and I can understand why. But to those who give it a chance, the real joy of the game is knowing your role, working seamlessly with your team, and blowing enemy airships out of the sky. Performance wise, this PS4 port is not great. It seems strange that a game over 5 years old cannot run at a consistent 60fps on console. Even with crossplay with PC, the player counts are fairly low. At launch, the waits for games have not been too bad, but I would expect the player numbers will soon dwindle. If you enjoy cooperative PvP games, try it out for $15, especially if you have a crew of 3 friends to bring with you. Maybe you like it, maybe you won't. For a particular type of person, this might be their favorite game in many years.

At just $14.99 USD, however, Guns of Icarus Alliance is recommended for those who want a different kind of co-op experience.

Guns of Icarus Alliance is a bold new addition to the PlayStation multiplayer roster. If you're in the mood to invest some time in becoming the best of the best as a team, there is much airborne fun to be had on board your shiny steampunk airship.

Guns of Icarus: Alliance is one of those games that has some great ideas and thought out implementation, but with some aspects of the performance and execution, it starts to hit some rough patches after a while. Finding a crew that works well together and does the right jobs at the right time can most certainly make this game stand out with some fantastic moments.

it's another example of a game with a great idea that flew too close to the sun.

I had almost forgotten about this game. Then I remembered I got it free from Humble Bundle back in October. I just hadn't gotten around to playing it. It seems I really didn't miss much. I'm sure this type of game is for some people, but it just isn't for me. I did all the tutorials. I found them excruciatingly boring. But I figured, well, it's not really fair to quit now when I haven't even played one online co-op game. I'm sure that where all the fun is. So I got on the queue to join a coop game. This is the day of the daily deal on Steam, surely there's lots of people online. Well, I was on queue for about 3 minutes so it wasn't that bad. I can imagine a normal day, however, when it's not the daily deal. Anyways, I get stuck as an engineer. Great, the one class that I was most bored with in the tutorial. You basically run around and bang on stuff or put a fire out. Maybe you get to shoot stuff if you're not taking too much damage. And sure enough, that was the whole game for me. We successfully completed our wave too. There were some rewards. But the biggest reward was being able to quit the game. The game mechanics were just too simple and not very fun. The graphics are outdated. The UI and gameplay are clunky. (However, this game would probably be fun in VR & everyone has a mic and headset there.) Rate 3/10. Do you like busy work? Do you like group projects at work and look forward to coming home so you can do some more group work? Then this game is perfect for you. I don't. So I didn't enjoy this game at all.
SummaryGuns of Icarus Alliance: PS4 Edition is a player-vs-player, player-vs-environment, steampunk airship combat game, complete with an ongoing war between six elite factions vying for control of a world ravaged by machines.
