Formula Retro Racing
The lack of multiplayer is felt here even with an interesting eliminator mode, and so Formula Retro Racing is only one to check out if you aren’t able to play Virtua Racing and are starved of options.
As I stated before Formula Retro Racing is a straightforward game. Coming into this game I twas expecting a better, newer version of Virtua Racing – and I was right. It doesn’t need to have a bunch of new features to top the older game. All it needed to do was visually enhance it and to keep the same charm that the game had in the ’90s. If you haven’t played Virtua Racing, or just want to play a fast-paced arcade racing game for a reasonable price, then Formula Retro Racing is the game for you.
We’re hopeful that Formula Retro Racing’s myriad issues can be fixed further down the line, because otherwise this is a fantastic modernised version of vintage arcade racers. For only £9.99 / $11.99, anyone who remembers the good old days of Virtua Racing will be in for a treat, and even those who don’t may still appreciate its minimalist art style and high-speed action.

"Formula Retro Racing" Reviewed By: Carless Yen Publisher/Dev: Repixel8 Platforms: XBOX and Steam Release Date: May 15th 2020 Price: 12.99 Remember those sit down racing games super popular in the 90's? Well Repixel8 just did an amazing job at bringing that experience back to life on XBOX and PC. "Formula Retro Racing" brings Low poly visuals in HD and 4K at 60fps. So it is just a perfect flow in every race. The controls are so smooth and spot on and the crazy crash physics are just so exciting as you watch destructible cars just being blown to bits in the air and track around you. I had a hard time doing this review, because I just kept saying one more race, just one more race. There are 8 different tracks and they all really look and feel different. The difficulty for each varies as well. Some are just plain circles. Some are loaded with turns. Some are beaches, forests, plain simple round race tracks, and city streets. There are different game modes as well. You have "Arcade" which is just basic racing with a set amount of laps and a time limit with checkpoints that extend your time. You also have "Eliminator" mode which you have to stay in the top 10 as long as you can. Reaching lap 30 is the finale and an Achievement will pop. The Achievements are all fairly simple and I say you can capture them all in around a hour. Every type race you do will grant you racer skill points. These will unlock race tracks for you. Each track can be done on all three skill levels, and you are granted skill points for each of these. Like you will get less points for finishing first on Easy then you would hard. The same goes for Eliminator mode. Like you may get 1 point on easy versus 3 points a lap on hard. So you just rack up these points to open new tracks to play. Both these modes are really fun, I wish there was more of a campaign mode though to inspire a lot more replay. I understood why not though as they were trying to capture that Arcade feeling. Like I said before they nailed it. It really is for just about any one. If your good at racing games the hard level will certainly test your skills and give you the competitive feel you're looking for. If you **** at them easy will let you stay in the race without making it to simple for you. The sounds of the game are perfect as well. Really entertaining music. That has a different vibe each song. Like some feels retro and some feels kind of hypercrushish if you've ever heard of that band. If not check them out they are really into gaming as well. I wish there was a few more songs though as I felt I heard the same ones over and over a lot. I think this is an addictive game if you are into racing titles. Especially retro ones. It really took me back to the days of playing Daytona, Pole Position, Enduro, and Al Unser Racing. Those were racing games I just loved as a kid. I felt like I was right back on those classic consoles and playing a classic title. It just fits really well into that genre, and I hope it gets noticed as much as it should. It really is a quality modern retro racing game so if that is your thing don't pass on this one. Pros: Smooth and perfect controls. Skill levels for everyone. Captures the Retro Arcade feeling Great Track design. Cool Vehicle destruction Easy Achievements Cons: Music while good can be repetitive. Wish it had couple more modes Overall: 7.0 If your looking to capture that sit down Arcade racing feel you used to get in the early 90's without taking up a bunch of room in your home. Formula Retro Racing is about as close as you are going to get to that on modern consoles. It really took me back, and I played it for hours. so addictive and fun.

Formula Retro Racing is a Polygon Graphics F1 Racing Game. From the break the music takes you back to the arcade, your ready to sit in one of this uncomfortable fake racing seats and challenge the computer. Fortunately most of us have a comfortable seat and a controller. The graphics are simple polygons with solid colors and a fairly bright aesthetic. Coupled together with the sounds and music, the game delivers exactly what it set out to, no more no less. Your racing in an Formula 1 car, so there's no drifting, or powersliding, just good old grip and speed. The game is very arcade, you slow to nearly nothing when you leave the track, and the slightest impact will wreck your car and send you flying before depositing you back on the track several seconds back from where you were. There is a customization section, so you can differentiate your car aesthetically. Alas this is only for you as the game doesn't have a multiplayer mode. With eight tracks of varying difficulty it will provide a good bit of cahllenge yo most racing fans. With Elemination and Time Trial modes, you can put yourself to the test against the tracks. Formula Retro Racing brings back the old school feel, but doesn't have much in the way of content. It does provide a beautiful retro, arcade driven experience worth a look on the Xbox One family of consoles.

As if Sega made a sequel to Virtua Racing: Formula Retro Racing has a few minor problems, but overall offers a lot of racing fun nonetheless.

If it featured a variety of vehicles and more tracks, Formula Retro Racing would be a fantastic game for fans of early '90s racers.
