Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride
Great for those who haven't played the original, not so thrilling for those who have. [Issue#26, p.81]
If you have a Nintendo DS and you love the RPG genre, Dragon Quest V is nowadays one the best options to enjoy the classic gameplay of an epic adventure with a retro taste.

Dragon Quest V is a must-play RPG, pure and simple. By extension, that means that Dragon Quest V: Hand of the Heavenly Bride is also a must-play RPG, though I can’t help but wish we were getting it sooner than 17 years late, and with a bit more fanfare and polish.

Having just completed Dragon Quest V on PS2, my second Dragon Quest game, I was thoroughly impressed. After comparing the SNES, PS2, and DS versions, I chose the PS2 version for its extra battle slot, 3D visuals, and fully orchestrated soundtrack, and I was not disappointed. Despite some complaints about the fan translation, I found it flawless, arguably the best I’ve encountered. The story, which follows the hero through three distinct periods of his life, is heartwarming and family-oriented, starting slow but building to those unforgettable "WTF" moments that are a hallmark of lengthy JRPGs. The world is richly detailed, with memorable NPCs that you bond with as you progress. A notable feature is the monster-catching system, which adds depth to the gameplay. Rather than solely recruiting NPCs, you're tasked with catching and leveling a selection of 30-50 monsters to join your battles. This can be a grind, especially since the recruitment odds for some monsters are abysmally low—some even have a 1 in 256 chance of joining you, odds that would be illegal in a gacha game. However, the developers seemed to anticipate this, as the more easily recruited monsters, like the Slime, Slime Knight, and King Cure Slime, are among the best. I relied heavily on these throughout the game, rarely feeling the need to pursue the rarer catches, as melee combat reigns supreme in this JRPG, and having a balance of monsters and human characters with healing abilities proved more valuable than relying on wizards and mages. The difficulty curve is inconsistent, starting off tough with the expectation of early grinding but easing up as you build your monster roster and acquire a wagon that can store and swap additional party members, who can also heal between battles. This setup is crucial in some dungeons, but strangely, certain dungeons don’t allow the wagon, leading to sudden spikes in difficulty, an odd design choice given that even the final dungeon permits it. The orchestrated soundtrack is simply top-tier, with boss music that hits hard, and I’ve even found myself listening to it while working for the past two weeks—it’s that good. Overall, Dragon Quest V on PS2 is a solid title that has further sparked my interest in the series, and I’m excited to explore more, likely starting with Dragon Quest VIII or XI.

DQ V has an amazing story with memorable characters. The progress is well paced, it has the right amount of grinding, collecting and training monsters is fun. Up to three party members (monsters or humans) follow you visibly like in Pokemon Yellow. It has the typical great Dragon Quest music and the sprites are pleasant to watch. DQ V is the best 2d Dragon Quest game. What could be improved: an alchemy system like in Dragon Quest 8 would have been nice. Monsters being visible outside of combat. Some kind of voice acting would be insane. Weapon skills being added. It plays alright on android. You get used to its controls.

If you like classic JRPG's, you can't go wrong with this amazing remake of one of the historical landmarks of the genre. Square Enix did a great job by crafting a brilliant re-telling of one of the greatest and most amusing stories ever told in the videogame industry.

I never played the Ds version, butit is the same story as the Snes version, so, great story, miss games that had a actual good plot and characters, good music, and from ehat i remember, also had good imersity, but as all Rpg's, it sadly does not give us an option,we are allways forced to do some things even though we dont want to, but aside from that, i give this game a 10 ou of 10, i i could iwould give it an 11 but the maximum is 10

A genre classic. Though its component pieces may be basic, they all conspire together to create an experience that’s the measure of anything to have come out of Square or Enix’s collective stable, and whether you’re a veteran of the series or a debutant, this is a slice of indisputable role-playing perfection - and one of the greatest RPGs the DS has to offer.

This game takes what it needs to become one of the greatest RPGs of the Dual Screen, with a superb story that pushes everything what we've seen so far beyond the limits. Its not the perfect Dragon Quest though, with too many combats and a weak monster system that still have to prove its real value. We'll be looking forward to DQVI.

Painful level grinding aside, Dragon Quest V is a fantastic, innovative experience.

Another strong offering for RPG fans to sink their teeth into, with some great graphical updates, but be warned: this is two parts work, one part play.

Hand of the Heavenly Bride is a solid, old-school adventure with the same problems and delights that any title from the period has. If you’re supporter of the series or just a sucker for this type of action, then you probably won’t be disappointed. But for the rest of you, HotHB does nothing that will change your stubborn opinions.

Dragon Quest 5 did something I really don’t see RPGs do, and yet it still was the same game from the same series I grew to love. Aside from a few hand selected problems, DQ5 charmed me with its life growing story, interesting characters, and inspiring monster/ally system.

One of my favorite JRPGs of all time! I love the story, the graphics, and the soundtrack. But above all else, I love how the combat makes you think. Some will argue that you hammer the A button repeatedly (probably true in the early parts of the game). But it felt like a good balance between using skills, buffs, de-buffs and items all in tandem, especially when taking on a major boss. Since completing this, I've beaten DQ8 and I'm currently working on DQ6, so clearly this game turned me into a fan of the series.

This game is a masterpiece, The music is amazing (sadly the music in this game is synthesized and not orchestrated because of stoarge limitations), The story is amazing and complex and deep with a lot of emotional moments (the best part of the game), The graphics are old but serviceable (the animations in battle look pretty good even today), The battle system while pretty basics requires strategy and the "Monster Taming" mechanic is very refreshing and gives a lot of options for you to make strategies for certain fights in the game. Overall a 10 out of 10 masterpiece.

Still the best Dragon Quest for what concerns story and characters, but being able to recruit monsters was amazing too.

I loved Dragon Quest 4, but i just couldn't bring myself to finish this one. It's just boring some how. The pacing, the areas, the fact that you have monsters as party members instead of characters. I just couldn't get excited once I became an adult. The childhood part where you go explore a haunted castle was great fun however.
