Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty

You never feel like there's anything extra that doesn't fit the original idea, less is sometimes more and more limitations are better. This is the distillation of the best of Cyberpunk. [Issue#330]

Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is not just the biggest expansion released by CD Projekt RED, but also one of the best pieces of content. The quality of the storytelling, art direction and level design in Phantom Liberty is incredible, even in comparison with the base game. Instead of getting more of the same, CD Projekt RED created a spy thriller that’s taking place in a dystopian slum, offering both search Cyberpunk fans and newcomers to the universe something to enjoy. Featuring two extremely different endings, which I strongly recommend all players to unlock, Phantom Liberty augments the entire search Cyberpunk 2077 gameplay experience and brings it to a whole new level.

Except for some lingering bugs and other graphical issues, the Phantom Liberty DLC serves as an ideal swan song for this iteration of Cyberpunk 2077. The story is gripping from beginning to end thanks to some expected but exciting plot twists, a big diverging point in the story that occurs way before the end of the campaign, and some very memorable and fleshed-out characters. The tale may be somewhat self-contained, but the ties to the rest of the city make it feel like a proper expansion versus something completely siloed off from the rest of the game. That would be a good enough reason for existing fans to take the plunge, but given the various changes made by patch 2.0, it's a game that's definitely worth jumping into if you've been waiting for a good chunk of the issues to get cleared up.

Playing Cyberpunk 2077’s Phantom Liberty expansion in 2023 is by-and-large a wonderful experience. It genuinely feels like CDPR has managed to zero-in on a lot of what the base game did well, as well as finding ways to polish up some of the aspects of it that didn’t quite live up to their potential.

Phantom Liberty is a fitting send off for V, Night City, and Cyberpunk 2077 as a whole. After a rocky launch, CD Projekt Red has delivered with an incredibly dense and impactful expansion to one of the medium's best cityscapes, even if the narrative choices on offer hold it back a smidge.

Phantom Liberty is a good expansion that adds an intriguing storyline filled with memorable characters and that, together with the 2.0 version, manages to also improve the gameplay, adding new features and changing existing ones that help Cyberpunk come closer to what we were promised years ago.

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty makes some improvements, but it fails to live up to its own lofty promises.

Give credit where credit is due: Cyberpunk 2077 went from an ambitious mess to one of the greatest games of all time. And it took years of updates to get it there. This expansion, however, is more of the same. The side quests are more fleshed out, and there’s a liveliness to Dogtown that we don’t find in Night City. But the espionage storyline is pretty by the numbers, and I don’t feel like it did enough to make me care about the main characters the way I should. The ending is really weak, and it runs objectively worse than the main game. But hey, more **** game is never a bad thing, right?

A decent addon to the main game, which I do not regret playing. It adds a lot to the game and manages to keep its influence in the game world. The added side story is actually great, I liked it alot. However, the way the missions play is just different. They feel very Hitman-ish and less Cyberpunk, the approach you do missions with is basically given to you, you can´t choose as much as you could in the main game. What I did expect after the horrendous launch of the main game was for this DLC to be polished as all hell, it was not. The added missions contain just as many bugs as the main game right now (2.1) which would be fine if CD Projekt would not have a reputation to repair. I guess we can be glad they´re not game-breaking. And without spoilering: I have noticed 2 voice lines which were added into the main game storyby the DLC. And they ****. One sounded entirely different like it was jammed into a preexisting conversation (which it was) and that pretty much ****. Would have loved to see a bit more effort.

I couldn't play more than 10h this game it's just not good in my opinion, both the story and universe aren't enjoyable.
