From dialogue that loads one line at a time to the lack of PS3-level graphics (high-res static art aside), everything seems like a remnant from the early 2000s. [July 2009, p.77]

A game that could have been an entertaining compilation of iconic Japanese characters turned out to be a frustrating, awkward mess of menus, gameplay imbalances and annoying dialogue scenes.
Cross Edge not only fails to be a compelling Japanese RPG but it makes for one seriously awkward and uninspiring game. Skipping this game isn’t a bad idea unless you can look past the many things wrong with this game.

Take this from someone who never played any of the other games in this universe. I felt no impact that would be present with the character canon in this game. So I can only really comment on the game play. It's a pretty straight forward turn-based foundation with a character placement/movement mechanic that is, at this point, present in most 2D JRPGs. The game kept introducing me to all these characters who, i'm assuming, I should know but since I don't It made it hard to follow the story. The world map is unappealing and the same could be said to the entirety of the game itself as it looks to be a PS2-era game. It became fairly dull to play after about an hour.

I love strategy rpgs and so I had to try Cross Edge I've started a game was introduced to a bunch of wonky characters and new battle system that I had to learn. I was excited. Unfortunately as I progressed through the game my excitement grew stale and the game provided no reason to play further as the only thing thing that I was getting is a bunch of the same random battle with same enemies and to advance anywhere required insane amount of grinding. I would be willing to overlook all of the above but the actual gameplay is lacking in a major way The battle system just does not make any sense to me there is no depth and constnat grind of same thing over and over again. I've now stomached around 10 hours worth of Cross Edge and I am not able to play this game any more so it will lie in wait until next yearly attempt of me ever finishing and I've had this game since release

This game had potencial but some flawyers made it uninteresting. The voice acting and illustrations are very good, but graphics are not anti-aliased. Battle animations are also well made and it has a cool system of combos. It has a lot of playable characters from many series. But the main problem for me is grinding. You have to grind a lot to beat the game, and that's something I personally don't like. I prefer grinding to make extra stuff, not main story. Also, the battles are relatively hard. You can die easily in every new dungeon. To progress, you need to grind and forge itens. But it's hard to find the items and there is lack of guides out there. It's also hard to find the monsters you search for. In short: if you don't care about grinding and spending many hours, it's a good JRPG to play.

This game has everything a great game needs except a good graphic. But there is a fantastic story with deep characters and great sound effects!

In the end, I can’t recommend Cross Edge to everyone, but I can recommend it to people who like deep RPGs and don’t mind a little bit of camp with their story.

Definitely a game for JRPG fans, for others not so much. If you don't mind 2D sprites and an okay plot (its a crossover game so the plot won't be as epic as something like FF9), then it might be for you. Game does end up focusing on Item Synthesis and and grinding more than I would like it to but still not that bad ****.

It's overly complex, cliquey and not exactly the kind of thing you expect to see running on a PS3. [Issue#182, p.78]

If you're looking for a relaxing game, with a good story and deep fights but not too much complicated, keep yourself away from Cross Edge. Otherwise, if you love titanic and frustrating quests and love to complete games at 100%...buy it!

It's not a broken game, just a joyless one, and it's obvious that there were far too many hands in the pot.

In the end, this is a movie for collectors and fans with a casual game tacked on.

This game ****. Another terrible NIS game, what happened to all the good quality RPGs like Suikoden, Breath of Fire or Dragon Warrior? Instead we get this low quality joke that would've been better suited on a handheld system. The amount of jokes about bad cooking will make you feel ****. Graphics are really bad even for cell shade. Music is awful. Story is really bad. Characters aren't likable. Battle system is the best part because it is pretty unique but this game has lost so many points from me for everything else that I cannot even bring myself to give it a single point. Games like this are the reason JRPG's are pretty much entering the age of dinosaurs and becoming extinct. Unfortunately people are so desperate for jrpg's that they will keep buying these low quality jrpg's and as long as people keep buying NIS's shovelware they will keep releasing them without putting any effort into their games.

The whole story progression in this game is absolutely inane. You have to walk around a map consistently scanning just to get anywhere. There are no towns at all and no NPC's. Sure, this is a fan service game but the story is told in the most mundane way possible. Most of the characters relay jokes from their respective games; you won't understand these jokes unless you played all the games from which these characters come from. The most idiotic part of the game is that your allies are the shop "NPC's" in which you pay them money for using weapons that everyone uses; not to mention that this story takes place in a world devoid of an economical system.
