Blasphemous 2 felt incredibly good to play despite its challenging nature and complex combat. It’s a great Soulslike 2D action-platformer that doesn’t rely on nonsense gimmicks that make the game artificially difficult for the sake of being punishing. Its exploration, art direction, and worldbuilding are unmatched in a sea of modern Metroidvanias released in 2023. If you’re down for a good challenge or path of penitence in a Roman Catholic-inspired 2D platformer, look no further. Like it or not, you will pay for your gameplay sins.

An aggravating mix of truly gorgeous visuals and some fun platforming challenges with unsatisfying combat. It feels often flat, and doesn’t live up to the first game. [Issue#32, p.72]

Our pilgrimage is one marked by the cuts and bruises we accumulate along the way, yet we find ourselves encouraged by a familiar mantra: how sweet the pain, indeed, when it is our own. [Issue#389, p.106]

Muy superior al primero en todos los sentidos, mucho más divertido, variado y difícil. El ser el segundo creo que le quita todo el frescor y lo especial que fue su antecesor, por eso no le llego a poner el 10.

The game has a bug where if you die after defeating a boss, you lose your progress. Even after three years, it has never been fixed.

This game improves on almost every aspect from the first game and doesn’t have a single bad boss. I loved the enemy variety and the art is genuinely beautiful. I loved every second of this game and thought it had some of the most fun metroidvania moments and gameplay.

Blasphemous 2 is not for the faint of heart. The battles can be difficult at times - to a controller-breaking level. However, if you’re a fan of the stresses and strains found in Souls-like games and are willing to learn the moves inside out, then this Metroidvania will reward you with beautiful finishing kills and adrenaline-filled boss fights.

While it’s unlikely to win over anyone that tried the first and didn’t vibe with it, Blasphemous 2 is undoubtedly a treat for fans wanting to spend more time with the Penitent One. With more variety in terms of both visuals and gameplay, this is a confident sequel that builds on the foundations of its predecessor. And while its story may be confounding at times, we can’t help but be mesmerised by its dark and mysterious world.

Blasphemous 2 leans heavily into its inspirations, and therefore doesn't reinvent the wheel – but with more to see, more to do, and, of course, more to slaughter, it improves on its forerunner's familiar formula across the board with devastating results.

This is a must-play game for all Metroidvania enthusiasts. The sequel gets rid of the problems of the first entry and manages to push further beyond all of its virtues. There's almost no flaws at all in Blasphemous 2: the game boasts incredibly addictive gameplay, fun misteries, exploration and a bearable yet challenging difficulty. It can certainly be considered amongst the best Metroidvania games of all time.

Though Blasphemous 2 lacks the wow factor of the first game, it does smooth out its edges to the point where it feels like a tighter, more fluid experience.

Blasphemous 2 has everything a proper metroidvania should have and plenty more besides. It’s properly difficult, it boasts wondrous exploration, epic bossfights and an imaginative world. So it doesn’t really matter that it’s not very different from the previous instalment.

OH. MY. GOD. I had my hopes up when I first played this. Blasphemous 1 was meh, combat was good but the movement was stiff and uncomfortable. This game made everything go away like it never existed. Gameplay is varied as hell, with 3 different weapons to choose (4 if you buy the DLC), each with their types of damage, stats and movesets. On top of that, the rosary system continues unchanged, prayers have been buffed, and the greatest addition, MORE MOVEMENT ABILITIES. I swear I didn't have this much fun exploring in a metroidvania since Silksong, and I'd even say Blasphemous 2 surpasses Silksong in some ways. The movement is a lot more fluid, with more content all over the map to traverse and return with new abilities, and combat is absolutely perfect, it's addicting, I swear. I'd pay for a mode to repeat bossfights over and over. The soundtrack is also a masterpiece. Obviously not every song is a 10/10 unforgettable (nor in any game), but it has a lot of bangers!! I'd recommend listening to "De Blanca Mantilla", it's genuinely my favorite. The art style is also amazing. They went from cinematics that looked weird, made with pixel art, to actual animated cutscenes. It may look generic to some, but I actually prefer this style, and makes the game look so much more beautiful and understandable. The map is way better connected, with more fast travel points and indicators that tell you (subtly) where the main story needs you to go, which definitely makes exploring a hundred times better than the original. And the endings, DAMN!! They were not special, nor outstanding, but if I mention them is because both hold a certain shock value, that's really well developed and actually makes you feel the weight of your actions, specially if you complete ending A after the first game. To sum everything up, Blasphemous 2 is an amazing, outstanding experience, that everyone needs to try. The first game may have disappointed some, or have some things that people dislike, but this game solves absolutely everything the first one messed up, and delivers a close to perfect, if not immaculate experience

I enjoyed this game, but I think its a step down from its predecessor. The world is massive and beautiful, the art design just as inspired by the first game. I love the way weapons also serve as traversal mechanics, and I love how the world sprawls so you can tell there arre many pathways through. But a lot of the modernizations they made, like downward attacks or permanent movement upgrades, rob this game of the uniqueness it had in the first game. The first game felt like it asked you to make sacrificies to get stronger, which fit the world's themes, while this game felt like a good metroidvania like any other. But, a big issue: the map updates form the DLC are present in the game veen if you don't own the DLC, meaning you are going to run into obstacles that you will never unlock a way past. that's bad form

Most of this game is actually an 8/10, but there are two bosses at the end that completely ruin the experience. They are extremely difficult, requiring dozens of tries. They have unskippable cutscenes that take minutes. They basically require very specific builds to have a shot at them, and these builds are often bugged out to the point you'll have to restart the game several times. One has a first phase that is simple but adds minutes to every attempt. Both can stun lock you. These just completely ruined the experience for me, and while I eventually finished, it wasn't worth the frustration. If you are ok with enjoying most of the game, I'd suggest stopping when you get to these last 2 bosses.

So, here’s another game that thinks it’s fun to have an unbalanced and abusive “final” boss. I really enjoyed most of the game, even with the increased difficulty after the patch. I even got almost all of the in-game achievements. But I uninstalled it when I reached Eviterno. I know that after enough attempts, muscle memory would eventually kick in and I’d beat the guy, but it’s just not worth it. Why would you ruin your game with something like this?! Now I don’t even care about the DLC or any possible sequel.
SummaryThe second scripture in the Blasphemous series portends the return of The Penitent One, with a story that continues from the free Wounds of Eventide DLC for the original game, where The Heart in the sky heralded the return of The Miracle and foretold the birth of a new miracle child. Awakened in a strange new land, and displaced from ... Read More
