Airship: Kingdoms Adrift

The gorgeous Anno aesthetic is complemented by epic aerial battles, and although the gameplay is a bit clunky, Airship delivers a very interesting gameplay experience. [Issue#330]
Airship: Kingdoms Adrift is a good game for anyone who wants a modern twist on classics like Sid Meier’s Pirates. The core story explores pretty familiar ground but it’s fun to simply move through the game’s world, make some money, enter tense battles, and find ways to improve ships and grow one’s fleet. The title’s release was troubled but developers claim that they have now restored all game content that’s supposed to be available, although bugs are still present. Airship: Kingdoms Adrift is an ambitious video game that offers some great moments but really never fully delivers on its promise.
The overall gameplay is quite decent. But the bizarre design decisions regarding flight, settlements, and NPC interaction, coupled with some annoying issues, like lack of fast-travel or tutorials, leave you with with a blend of both fun and frustration that just doesn’t quite payoff in the end. I can see a niche audience for a game like this. But to have a broader appeal, I think Airship: Kingdoms Adrift needed more time in the oven to expand its feature set and create a good on-boarding experience.

This game needs a lot more work, as of the time of my post 11/17/23. The Escort/Fleet Ai is so, so terrible. Way to often, they go in-between other ships and get blown to hell and back. Doesn't matter what you have them set on. (evasion) for example. Traveling needs a speed boost big time, even with the 10x boost at the moment it takes 20-60 minutes irl time to get around. Traveling back and forth to go to one town to talk to someone then back to another and repeating this process for the main story is a huge, huge waste of time. Its boring because theres nothing to interact with or random stuff to find really. You can attack pirates and other ships, but it gets old fast. having a bounty on you and having the hunters basically spawn on top of you gets a bit old. It runs kinda wonky. It will be smooth as butter, then just start acting up for some reason and frames just die for no reason at all. Wait on this, if you where thinking about it. This game has tons of potential but its in a sorry state and needs lots and lots of tlc.
