If you love the early Command and Conquer and Red Alert games, you're going to vibe with this big time. Really really well done RTS and the music soundtrack is insane. Frank still knows how to make a video game soundtrack.

Great stuff. Love the entire aesthetic of post WWII Britain with references to things like the BBC Light Programme and such. They really dug in on the vibe, going full on English slang and northern accents. I'm sure there are a lot of gamers in the US that are going to be confused by some of that but I love that they were completely unapologetic about the look and feel of the world they designed. Amazing voice acting and sound design. Rating it a bit lower than I would because I wasn't a huge fan of the limited inventory system and while the game does have different lines of dialogue that you can say to NPCs, the inflection and attitude that you choose does little to nothing so it's more of an illusion of control but the game is fun. I like that it's not disturbingly long as well. Sometimes you want something that isn't 300 hours long. Would love to see an Atomfall 2!

I don't like rogue likes or even puzzle games but even I have to admit this game is a masterpiece. Not a single bug and amazing design. It's a bit too random for me (and long) but that probably has more to do with the fact that this kind of game isn't really my genre so that's probably me perceiving it incorrectly. As a friend of mine said to me recently, "Blue Prince...more like blue balls".

Honestly surprised how genuinely good this game was considering how many studios tried to rescue it and how long it took to make. I went into this expecting Duke Nukem Forever and what I got was way above my expectations. It's still pretty B movie but hey, it was kinda fun and wasn't that buggy, so I'm pretty impressed. I don't like the fact that it was on Epic first. I waited a year before playing it on Steam because I think Epic is not customer friendly.

World of Warcraft: The War Within5

World of Warcraft has officially become a walking simulator. Where is the actual game? What little game mechanics there are present little to no risk, challenge, or consequence. They claim that this time they "listened to the fans" but I see little to no evidence of that. The game is beyond easy. At this point, you just walk around triggering cutscenes. I mean the cutscenes look nice but the story is absurd. Too many characters, none of it is relatable, and almost all of it is forgettable. They fixed none of the problems that existed prior to this expansion and created new ones to compound my boredom. Also, I paid roughly $95 (Canadian) to buy the expansion and get enough play time to play it for a month. Is that good value for money when I max level in 2 days, complete all the quests in 7, and dungeons in 1? Was $95 really good value for 10 days for boredom? I think I got ripped off.

I was interested in playing this game because people told me it bore similarities to Gothic and Gothic II. It does but with some survival genre aspects that weren't to my personal liking. For example, there is a heavy weight restriction on character inventory and the food you cook or harvest expires fairly quickly. The game has seasonal cycles that require you to hold onto gear that helps you deal with hot or cold temperatures but considering you can't hold much, this is frustrating. There are few quests, as the game leans more heavily into the survival sandbox aspects rather than questlines. That said, you can mod the game to make it more like Gothic and that helped me connect with it more strongly. As the developer has said this was more of an experiment, I'm looking forward to seeing their improvements on this interesting RPG when they release Outward 2. Lots of interesting stuff in this game and this developer is definitely on my radar as a result.

Wow, what an wonderfully bizarre experience. This one thinks WAY outside the box. I don't think I've ever played anything like this before. It was very unique, it always kept me fascinated, confused, baffled, and interested. I'm not even sure how to describe this game. If you like your games full of odd mechanics, quantum theory, and time loop insanity, this one is for you. Definitely one of the best indie games I've ever played. Can't wait to see more from these guys.

ELEX II2
Apr 29, 2023
This is the first time I've ever not recommended a PB RPG. It hurts to say that because I've been a big fan of their games since I first played Gothic 1 and 2 when Gothic 2 first hit shelves in North America. I've been playing their games since and apart from a few moments where they've come close to Gothic 1 and 2 (Risen 1), it's been a slow steady decline. This decline was barely acceptable with Elex but Elex 2 hits a new low that I cannot support in any way. This is not just one of the worst games PB has ever made, it's one of the worst games I have ever played. The combat is juvenile, the graphics are buggy (and recycled from Elex), as is the music (most of it from Elex 1) and terrible (an insult to anything Kai Rosenkrantz ever did). The writing is some of the worst I've ever encountered. The quests make almost no sense. Factions don't make any rational sense (why would anybody join the Morkons?) and things that people say make little to no sense. The entire script sounds like it was translated from German to English using Google Translate, then passed to mostly bad voice actors with no coaching or guidance on emphasis, cadence, tone, or pronunciation. Some characters from the first game are retconed, yet new characters are brought in and you are expected to believe you played with in the first game (ie. Bully). Companions are abusive (ie. Nasty, Bully, etc.) for seemingly no reason. You have a child, who you and your partner treat like garbage (this can't have been written by a parent), especially at the end of the game. This is genuinely embarrassing to see from PB. I will be stunned if these developers manage to get funding for Elex 3 and even more stunned if I can be convinced to play it. I am stupider for having played this game. And for people that say "they're a small studio of 30+ people", enough. It's been over two decades since Gothic 2. This company is not learning from their mistakes. They are regressing into insignificance and have been for quite some time. Rest in peace, Piranha Bytes, I guess. Sad to see it come to this.

This is an extremely well made game. There's a lot to enjoy about it. I just wish wild west settings were my thing or I'd probably be giving it a 10. If you're into that sort of thing, it's probably a 10. For me though, I found the game kind of depressing. Impressively depressing but depressing and grim nonetheless. Don't get me wrong, I was pretty impressed with the game and I liked it. It was just hard to play sometimes because it's a bit of a death march. Not the most uplifting story I've ever been dropped into, that's for sure.

I thought this DLC was good but a little hard as you got further in and was a little overly grindy. It took forever to get to the final boss, which got a little annoying. It's okay. I got two max level in 2 days, all the main and side quests in 5 days, the dungeons, the dragonflight glyphs, dragon races, engine of innovation, tried the new dracthyr evoker, and then after a week and a half it just turned into a grind fest. It's good for maybe 2 weeks but after that it's back to business as usual. Lots of grinding, grinding, and more grinding. I think maybe I'm tired of that. My main complaint is that it's WAY too easy to level. I shouldn't hit max level in 2 days. What's the point of even levelling anymore?

Oct 29, 2022
Look, I'm gonna be honest. It's a great looking great. It didn't crash, the voice acting was great, the motion capture was top notch, the voice scripts were good, the graphics were fantastic, the gameplay was smooth, and the music was great. That said, as great as this game is, there are two very big problems with the game that keep it from being a great AAA game to just an okay AAA game. Specifically, the mechanics and the AI. The AI on the enemies is lackluster - the combat is just WAY too easy. Also, mechanically the game is the exact same game as Far Cry 3, Far Cry 4, and Far Cry 5. I know that you "shouldn't break what isn't broken" but there's been enough time since Far Cry 3 that you expect a little bit more innovation at least. I mean, it's been 9 years since then. What has the team in change of mechanics been doing in those 9 years?

I'm going to give a good review score because I want to say good things about Piranha Bytes. They build some of the best open worlds there are. This is the central reason I play their RPGs. When you play a PBRPG, you really feel like you're living in a well designed world. That said, you can't ignore the landslide of issues facing PB that make their work seem AA rather than AAA. This is hardly a surprise but there is so much they need to improve. The voice acting is awful and the translation of the dialogue from German to English is embarrassing, causing the story to make almost no sense. The combat is rough, the character animations are awful, the cold/warm system is ridiculous, the ending is poor, and the initial learning curve makes the game unattractive to new players. I should hate this game but I don't. If it wasn't for the amazing environments that they create, I'd be a lot less forgiving. One of these days, I hope PB does a good job again, putting them on the level of what they made with Gothic, Gothic 2, and the first Risen game. This isn't it, but I'll throw them a nice score in hope that they get it right again at some point.

This is one hell of a CRPG. I'm glad I played it after it was heavily patched though, as those opening months of release must have been brutal. This, along with Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous are some of the best CRPGs I've ever played. Like most CRPGs, there are a few bugs and issues but I'd say this is on par with CRPG classics like Baldur's Gate 2. Not to be missed if you're into this sort of thing but fair warning, as the learning curve can be a kick in the teeth for people that aren't used to D&D or Pathfinder. It's a hard game and you need to know what you're doing. You're going to be deep in the stats and you're going to get a LOT of hours out of this game, so set aside a LOT of time. Great stuff though. A lot of people complained about this DLC but I'm not sure why. Took me about 15 hours of leisurely doing all the achievements and side quests and I enjoyed it. I don't think 15 hours is short for a DLC. Hell, I've been main campaigns that were less than 10 hours long so I think 15 hours is pretty reasonable. The new voiceovers were great and I really liked the story, even though it was essentially a very long side quest. There are some puzzles but they're really easy. For the people that complain that puzzles are in the game, I'd say that if you don't like puzzles in CRPGs, maybe you shouldn't be playing games from the RPG genre because it's pretty common and they're nowhere near the difficulty of the puzzles in the main campaign.

I'll give this one a 7 out of 10. It's an interesting CRPG blobber that I always wanted to play and finally got around to it. Great graphics for its time but a little ambitious. The FMV sequences aren't that impressive, even for their time. It's a fairly good CRPG but it's a bit light on plot and the ending is a let down. There are also some puzzles near the end of the game that are so obscure and vague that it's difficult to know how anybody could expect to complete them without looking up their solutions on the internet. I'm speaking most specifically about the keypad you use on the first floor of Khull-Khuum's tower to disable a trap.

Not bad but a mix of highs and lows. For me, I took no interest in the multiplayer, as I'm a big fan of Tie Fighter and X-Wing from the DOS days and was looking for a similar experience. Great cutscenes, good looking gameplay and a fun ride but on the down side the flying experience felt a bit sluggish and the keyboard and mouse control set feels a bit rough. Also, it's too short. I was experiencing an old school feel like maybe something where you could play through a rebel campaign of 15 missions and then 15 missions of imperial, kind of like with the original Command and Conquer. Playing both sides simultaneously was interesting but ultimately felt a bit unfocused. Interesting though. I think these guys should remake X-Wing and Tie Fighter together in one game where you can choose sides and then play through those campaigns. Those games are crying out for remasters.

I loved this DLC. Some people complained that it was too short for the price and that they got through it in three hours but honestly, if you're getting through it in three hours, you're doing it wrong. Either your difficulty is too low or you're not doing side quests and missing half the fun. Lots of interesting new storyline, multiple zones to play in, different endings and the difficulty scales with your party level. You can play it early on when your party is level 10 or so or even late in the game when you're reaching the Yuma County Speedway about to face down Liberty at the highest levels. Interesting new weapon and combat mechanics to play with and new crafting aspects make it a lot of fun.

I'm no Starcraft expert and couldn't remember what any of the units did when I came back to play this expansion. It shouldn't have been this easy. Wow. I really didn't like Elder Scrolls 3 or 4 and could never figure out what all the fuss was about. I always thought Gothic 1 and 2 were WAY better at implementing an immersive open world RPG. To me, Oblivion just seemed bland and repetitive (ie. tower after tower being closed and they all seem to be designed the same way it got tiring for me). Skyrim changed my mind though. I think they finally figured it out. The world looks great, the quests are pretty good. It has a nice big playtime on it yet you still feel like you can play it casually in 30 minute chunks. The open world design is fantastic. Traversing the world just feels fantastic, believable, and fun. I haven't seen an open world this well designed since the Gothic games. The factions, races and classes are fun without seeming unnecessary. Yeah it's pretty hard to say anything negative about the game. I will say that as a PC player, I absolutely hated the menu system. It wouldn't have taken that much work to make a nice PC based menu system that doesn't feel like a console system. Or maybe it could have been added in as a menu option in case you wanted to play on PC with a controller. That said, their support of mods has allowed me to add in PC friendly menu systems to replace theirs, so at least I have options and can't really complain, as I'm not locked into it. Thank you Bethesda for a great gaming experience. All the accolades are well deserved.

I really didn't like this game. You can make all kinds of improvements to your game engine and become focuses on making great games in a certain genre but the game penalizes you harshly for repeating genre combinations. So I make a great fantasy role playing game and it gets amazing reviews, I improve my game engine with things like rich backstory, character development, and other aspects pertinent to role playing games but when I make another fantasy role playing game it gives me terrible scores because I'm repeating myself. This isn't at all similar to what game development is like. The fact that I have to go from fantasy role playing games to making a casual virtual pet game for kids in order to have success is ridiculous. If any of this game was reality, companies like Bioware, Blizzard, and Maxis would have tanked after their first game. I'm sorry, but the mechanics in this game are ridiculous and it just makes the game feel clunky and broken.

I'll play it as a single player experience for a month and then move on to something else, but if you see it from that perspective, it's good for a month I suppose. Great art, story, music, etc. Nothing wrong there. Just the overall design and direction on this MMO needs to reach some kind of paradigm shift and I'm not seeing it showing any signs of going there any time soon.

UFO was awesome, but you can always go play it in DOSBOX and it'll still be great. It's not like somebody killed X-Com; that's just silly, and people that are saying that need to think about how silly they sound saying it. This way you get a game that evokes the awesomeness of the X-Com games of the past, but brings in new elements to re-imagine it. Let your nostalgia go free and enjoy something new and awesome. When I first played this game, I went straight for the turn based. I was upset that they were trying to make X-Com into a real time game but happy that they at least gave me a choice. That said, years later I tried the real time and it works surprisingly well. I'm not saying it's better than turn based, I just think it works well within the framework of this title, as it did later on in the UFO series (Aftermath, Aftershock, and Afterlight). Some of the graphical aspects of the new engine are slightly clunky but it might just take a little getting used to. Some people really didn't like this title but I thought it was great. The cutscenes were awful, but who plays X-Com for cutscenes, right? The story was really good and I really enjoyed the aspect of moving from a geoscape to a cityscape using factions of people and corporations instead of countries. It was like a version Sim City I'd actually want to play. I remember when this came out, people were upset that the multiplayer aspects had been scrapped. X-Com always works best as single player anyway, so it's not a huge issue. Absolutely loved this game and I highly recommend it. If you like this title, also check out the UFO series, which was built on an engine the creators of X-Com wrote.
