Charming fishing game with a lovecraftian story. The game is quite relaxing making you move from zone to zone while upgrading your equipment to catch and sell better fish and piecing together the mystery. Near the end I found it a bit too repetitive to become something special.

I remember playing this as a kid and being absolutely terrified. Its soundtrack is still one of my favorites today. Having just replayed it, it is less scary and the terrible voice acting takes you out of the game a bit, but back in the PS2 era this was, with Resident Evil, the best horror game. The story and themes are still shocking today and I wish more games would tackle such mature subjects. We can only hope the remake will do it justice but by expectations are unfortunately very low.

While never being the biggest Amnesia franchise fan, as a horror lover, I was looking forward to this one. The premise is great, you are alone in a creepy World War 1 bunker and need to find the way out. Why are you here? Who brought you? Where is everybody else? What the hell is that noise? The bunker is not big and has four main areas that you can explore. You can find scrap, craft helpful items and piece the story together through notes and pictures. Which leads me to my biggest gripe as a story person. Making sense of the story while being constantly hunted by the monster was more annoying than fun. If the generator goes out and you have no light, good luck, you will miss important items. After a few monster deaths the tension is kind of gone and I started sprinting through the bunker while I had light.

The game itself is a walking sim, for players that do not know this beforehand I can understand the frustration. You walk, pick up scraps of info and walk further. Piecing the story together is easy enough and makes for a macabre tale of a painter that seems to have lost his mind. The second game is also included and changes the setting completely. Exploring the house in Unreal Engine 5 is a treat. The graphics look awesome and are very atmospheric. Now I am not the biggest Blooper team fan and very worried for the Silent Hill 2 remake (one of my favorite games of all time) but Layers of Fear (the first story) was their best game. Unfortunately, it went downhill from there and leaves me worried for the future.

The graphics looked great and guns felt powerful enough, I did not care for the errands or the shooting range of the merchant and liked the upgrade system. Leon has some funny voice lines. The boss arenas were terrible and way too small to navigate, which made some bosses frustrating to fight.

I really did not enjoy this one. After five hours you have seen everything the game has to offer. Voice acting is monotone, I did not care for any of the characters and enemies come in clusters of four max five enemy ships. You will rarely attack a bigger enemy ship. Loot repeats over and over again, you will use the same weapons all game just with higher stats, legendary items are too rare for a looter shooter. Quests are level gated, meaning you have to grind the same boring enemies and missions to advance. Now the worst part must be the puzzles that repeat over and over again. It is like finding a needle in a haystack, absolutely sleep inducing! It took me 25 hours to complete the game and I just soldiered through because I hoped it would get better. If you do not like the gameplay loop after a few hours do not go on, trust me. On a positive note it is a good looking game and ran well except on one or two planets.

Throughout the years and before the official release media outlets would write that Atomic Heart would never release and looks too good to be true in the trailers. With multiple games releasing already in 2023 with performance issues and bugs I had surprisingly little problems with this game. An example of how you should not judge a game before release, the negative press was uncalled for. A love letter to Bioshock your first impression is the fantastic world building and environmental storytelling. The second impression is the annoying main character, constantly swearing and arrogant which becomes grating over time. While some dialogue was funny, most of it is childish and I would have wished for a different protagonist. The game itself looks absolutely stunning, the music with a mix of classical and house music (sometimes mixed together) is fantastic and the gunplay serviceable. Playing with a controller on PC some bosses were a bit hard to keep in focus with their fast movements. I thought the upgrade system that returns spent materials if you want to try a different weapon or skill is a great idea. Overall an enjoyable game for fans of Bioshock that does not need to hide behind his inspiration.

The game evoked a very strong feeling of helplessness that I miss in modern horror games. It reminded me of one of my favorites Silent Hill with its psychological horror. Sometimes what you cant see and only hear, scares you more than what you see. I would lie if I said I did not get frustrated sometimes, melee combat was atrocious, the swamp was terrible to navigate and losing all my hoarded items when transitioning to it felt cheap. I only started playing the single player four years after release and was impressed by how good it was. Compared to other open worlds this one feels lived in, from NPC chatter, realistic small towns and cities, the physics and weather engine to flora and fauna, it is an example of how an open world should be constructed in video games. The story keeps you interested, characters have depth and are likeable (or not) and the game keeps you entertained for at least over 40 hours. If you want to complete everything you can easily spend over 100 hours. With open world games feeling empty and more like a checklist full of icons that you work off one by one this is a prime example of how it should be done and deserves its place in the top 10 of the best games made to date.

Living on a tropical island, around Christmas time I love to boot up The Division. No other game represents a snowed in NYC as good. The gameplay loop for the story missions and leveling up is fun enough to keep you going. To cope with the bullet sponges you need to upgrade your gear every level. I did not like the constant hostile NPC dialogue of quest givers (I am there to help, why is everyone so hostile?) and overall snarky tone. After completing the main story in around 25 hours, fatigue set in and I had no drive to continue the end game activities. Playing the first God of War in 2023 was a frustrating experience. While the story and cutscenes are great and hold up very well, the game feels unfair. Now I might have forgotten that older games were way harder but some sequences were overtuned with enemies that took too long to kill and constantly respawned. The blocking system did not feel natural and you became stunned easily which took momentum out of fights. I loved the level design and the mix with puzzles on the other hand, the camera work was stellar showing you impressive vistas in the background that made the levels feel bigger than they are. There are hidden secrets and chests to find and the environments are varied enough. Overall the game did not age very well and would have received a better rating from me on release.

I can only give a review for the single player co-op campaign since I barely played the Multiplayer. Together with a friend everything is more fun, even a mediocre campaign. We had many laughs about the repeating animations in cutscenes and just shooting enemies together. If you look at the game objectively it is pretty disappointing compared to older titles. The open world does not do much for the gameplay and is pretty bland. There are no major vistas or landmarks to explore and we would have rather seen the old linear missions. The missions itself reuse assets constantly and after the twentieth repeating metallic alien corridor it becomes a slog. Years ago when Parasite Eve released I could never finish it, I was too young to understand the idea of transferring weapon and armor skill points from one to the next. What I had never forgotten was the haunting piano soundtrack and the incredible looking FMV scenes, that stuff blew my mind back then. I always wanted to finish it again and waited for December to fit the theme. While I did not expect it to be so short I had a great time with the game, the story keeps you hooked and I was surprised by how disturbing some of the cutscenes were. The music alone was great, I still love the piano soundtrack today. Combat was disappointing some mechanics are almost impossible to dodge, if you die you cant skip cutscenes or dialogue and sometimes have to wait five minutes to try again. But the worst happens twice in the game, an insta-death mechanic if you do not know exactly where to run (Once after a 15 minute boss fight). Very frustrating! Inventory management is terrible, key items are not always discarded automatically and clutter the space. Overall I am glad that to have revisited the game and wish more were set in present day and not fantasy scenarios.

Citizen Sleeper is a sci-fi role-playing action-adventure game. Onboard a space station this narrative game lets you meet a diverse set of characters all with their own problems. Every morning a set of dice is rolled (rpg tabletop style), the higher the dice, the higher the chance to complete quests and events of your choosing. While you do not have to complete every quest and help all the characters, I thought the game is written well enough to want you see all different stories. Characters had depth, side missions were well written and different enough and the main story had me hooked until the end. I did not really like the skill tree, some skills felt useless and the AI was shockingly bad (they kept coming one after the other and did not seem to use any tactics). What impressed me most was the city, it looked incredible and as a big fan of the original Blade Runner there were some days where I would just drive around at night and soak it all in while listening to the Jazz radio, they really nailed the Sci-Fi vibe.
