Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Angel of Darkness
5
User Scoreperkjl

Tomb Raider: Angel of darkness has a few good things going for it. The music score is performed by the London Symphony Orchestra and sounds phenomenal! Secondly, AOD's developers Core Design provide interesting architectural structures in levels and at times are able to achieve a decent and mysterious atmosphere. On top of that, the storyline is dark and probably the most engaging in the series. However, an ambitious story can't save the horrid gameplay, which is riddled with broken tank-like controls and unfinished material. You will be begging for Lara Croft's outdated control scheme from her 90's adventures! Only die-hard fans can appreciate what AOD has to offer, but casual raiders won't be able to slug through it. And by "slug" I'm literally referring to the equivalent of Lara's movement. Visually it's about average with some decent effects and set pieces with the occasional slowdown here and there. The game takes a while to pick up, but midway into the game things will start to get familiar and Lara will raid a tomb or two. For being the first Tomb Raider entry to move outside the 32-bit realm I'd say you're better off sticking with Lara's PSX games. And on Core Design's/Eidos' end, that's pretty embarrassing! You might as well move on to Crystal Dynamics efforts with the series, which are vast improvements over AOD and possibly it's predecessors. However, the original Tomb Raider game will always remain a classic and the best the series has to offer. AOD's formula takes too many risks that make it feel more like a point and click adventure title mixed in with badly ripped Metal Gear Solid stealth segments. It rarely feels like a Tomb Raider game, but when it does that's when AOD shines. It's too bad that shine flickers rather quick.

The granddaddy of all 3d platformers! Super Mario 64 is basically my childhood! It still remains a personal favorite and game I cherish both in the 3d platformer genre as well as all 3D video games in general.

First Final Fantasy game I ever completed. It has some unusual characters, but they are fun nonetheless. They will definitely grow on you over the course of the game. Everything else about this FF entry plays it safe in the sense that it's more traditional than FFVIII or even FFVII. Lot's of references from all FF games and a nod to the earlier entries FF1-6). Great game and beautiful FMV's and worlds. Possibly my favorite airship overworld music as well.

Highly underrated in my opinion. The battle system sticks out from the other FF entries and tries to do something a little more original than the traditional FF norm. It has it's flaws, but overall good. The world feels a bit more cheerful and not so depressing compared to FFVII's Midgar. Also, the visuals are some of the best on PSX, especially the blending of FMV's during gameplay. Very cool! Underrated music and game in general.

My favorite entry in the series and one of the most memorable PC/ PSX game experiences. This game is pretty much to the basics before the series got convoluted with it's gameplay mechanics. This was later fixed in 2006's Tomb Raider Legend. However, the original is what truly shines with excellent level design and atmosphere. A great sense of adventure and exploration as well. The PSX has a slight edge over PC version for having a music score that adds to the immersion. Great game. Fewer flaws than TR2-6.

It's Craaaaaazyy Taxi! How can you not love this game? Despite it's flaws the premise is very simple and highly addictive. This game will always bring me back to the times as a child in the arcades. This was one of the coolest games you could play. It was great to have that arcade experience in the living room thanks to the Dreamcast. So when that system died out it was great to see arcade classic appear on Sony's PS2. Fun times.

Better than I thought it would be. It feels like an alpha for Resident Evil 4. Surprisingly, there are some similarities. Overall, the game is mediocre. Everything from visuals, gameplay, characters, monsters, etc. The plots and characters are basically rip offs from main entry games. Go figure this game is spin off and nothing more. It's decent.

This game is bonkers! After playing RE5,6, or any of the other newer RE entries you will gain to appreciate RE4 a bit more. It's more action oriented than it's predecessors, but the series was already trying to head in that direction since RE2. The classic survival horror elements are mostly dismissed, but it's there (barely). The PS2 version adds new modes on top **** with already tremendous amount of replay value. Mercenaries mode is insane, challenging, and very rewarding! I know I put a unhealthy amount of hours into this game beating it to 100% completion. I don't know if I could go through it ****'s madness!

As far as movie licensed games go this was a very good game! Very heavily inspired by the PS2 era of GTA games, but without the violence/car theft and with Spidey instead to save the day! New York City is all open world and you must do missions whilst web slinging across New York ****. You can basically go anywhere! Very good game.

Fun platformer from Naughty Dog the creators of the Crash Bandicoot and Uncharted series. The open world environments with no loading times was impressive as well as the visual achievements/ polygon counts. It's probably one of the better platformers for the PS2.

It's far from the worst entry, but it's definitely not the best. Especially when compared to RE1-3. The flow of the game is often tedious and slow. The storyline feels a bit unusual for a Resident Evil game, but still entertaining nonetheless. RE2 and RE3 feel more progressive in the technical achievement department. Code: Veronica feels like a step back to some degree. It has more in common with the flaws of the original (which was a better game), Long backtracking, tedious battles, etc keep this entry from stealing the spotlight from the classic trilogy on PSX. The only thing it had going at the time was nice visuals and cutscenes, which even back in 2001 were very Dreamcast esque hence being a port of the DC version.

Amazing 2D.5 platformer with some great 3d cel-shading and highly underrated. Some of the levels are tough, but you will embrace the challenge as it is rewarding once you master through them. The Maze of Memories music was so catchy I still can play that tune in my head. That level was crazy! In a good way of course!

This was the game PS2 users were waiting for back in 2001. It's probably my favorite RPG even surpassing FFVII to a degree and it's definitely the best game on PS2. The lush environments and music are beautiful! The follow the yellow brick road-Wizard of Oz esque linearity is more of a plus than a negative. Along your adventure you meet tons of interesting character, amazing scenery, and fight some of the coolest looking monsters! The gameplay is my favorite of the franchise let alone the genre!

GTA: Vice City was such a vast improvement over GTA3. It captured the south FL Miami vibe very well, but with a 80's twist (and beats). It's of smaller scale than GTA: SA and even GTA3, but Vice City has it's own personality that sets it apart from the other entries. You will love the Scarface references (If you've seen the movie)!
