The Hunger Games

It's awfully awkward to critique the movie so late, but I'll do so anyways. One of the things that "The Hunger Games" does well is that the emotional input is there. The emotions feel real, the intense is present, and you feel fear (as the Capitol intends). One of my problems with "The Hunger Games", is that there is not enough time to develop all of the information brought in the book onscreen. Even with 2 hrs and 30 minutes, I feel that, "The Hunger Games" is generally rushed. It's hard to take in emotional scenes if they are happening to fast, and unfortunately for me, this was a little hard to grasp. Another issue remained with the CG, and how it seemed very Computer Generated rather then realistic. But then again, with a $78 million budget, it's hard to complain. I may feel ****, but I still feel that "The Hunger Games" is a strong film, as it succeeds is driving the emotions and feeling of intensity in your face.

Being an avid reader and both a movie lover, watching The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, was truly a satisfying experience. One of the pros to the film are that the actors display a wide range of emotion, especially Jennifer Lawrence. Usual actors will do their part, but Catching Fire's notable characters display deep and emotional realistic presence. The issue between Katniss and Peeta's growth remains a question, as like many movies these days, lack the ability to develop a relationship believably. Perhaps its the fact that the book is in first person, while the movie cannot delve into Katniss' feelings orally. Despite this minor flaw, Catching Fire provides a long, but durable and enjoyable experience with action, emotion, and convincingly acted scenes.

Let's face it. Disney is trying to bring back the old in a new, modernized style way. So did they succeed? Unfortunately, not entirely. One of the flaws of Frozen is the characters and how they are played in the film, which seems odd, as Disney princesses usually work well in its film. With the high hopes of Elsa into play, she unfortunately has very little to do in the film. Her character grows, but not in a way that seems realistic. Along with this, Elsa and Anna's relationship occurs for 2 minutes, (at the scene of the party), and for the rest their relationship develops quickly at the climax that feels off. Sadly, the main protagonists are supposed to have a relationship that should develop from hatred through a conflicted passageway to friendship, but it only happens instantly in this film. No development. However, there are still characters that succeed in a way to interest people such as myself. Olaf, one of the "sidekicks" that are present in all Disney films, is a delight. With funny lines and with a original song that brings laughs, I liked him. Unfortunately, NO purpose of him was in the film. According to the directors, Olaf is supposed to connect Anna and Elsa, but he just doesn't. I also really enjoyed the twist at the end with Hans, which purposes the commonality with "perfect" princes in Disney films. Kristoff, Anna's eventual love interest, is also interesting to watch, with growth that feels genuine. The plot is a fairy-tale, so it's obvious how it ends. One of my issues with Frozen is that the plot, forgets what it tries to explain. The main plot of Anna remembering Elsa is forgotten, Elsa's powers are not explained (which was disappointing to myself), characters like Marshmellow were forgotten, and the side antagonism of the Duke not well developed. Despite this, what I still liked about Frozen was the comedy and the emotional lines. One of the parts that still touches me is that true love is an act of a loving deed to one another and not just a true love kiss. That was touching.. One of the things that saves this movie is the music. The music is beautiful in Disney Fashion. The score flows, it moves, and it makes you feel. The original songs in the film are better than Disney's attempt with "Tangled", but I don't see it even close to matching past Disney film songs. The problem remains, the songs lack similarity. When you listen to Belle's songs in Beauty and the Beast, you hint that there are similar tones and rhythms that play into them, but when you listen to the songs in Frozen, they are completely opposite to each other. One song "Frozen Heart" sounds like an opera song, while "Love is an Open Door" is a modern pop song. "Let it Go" is an amazing Broadway song, while "In Summer" is a comedic song. One song that once again interests me is the combination between "Let it Go" and "For the First Time in Forever", which is beautiful to listen to. Overall, Frozen has the factors of music and the animation to help itself redeem its lack in characters. The twist and turns in the film add to a nice touch that makes this film, for myself, an enjoyable time.

"Iron Man 2" is able to continue its predecessor's wonderful visual effects, however, the writing feels a bit unstable. Many sub plots are not well executed, and ends up to being pointless to the film. Along with this thought, I often found myself annoyed by the protagonist, Tony Stark, and felt that the lessons learned in the original film felt off put in this sequel. While many things irked me in the film, the story isn't horribly crafted, and maintains a nicely put action-packed story. With a surprising finale that overpasses the middle section of pointless scenes, "Iron Man 3" manages to make it to an above average super hero film.

"We're the Millers" has its good moments with Jason Sudeiki and Jennifer Aniston as the lead. With infectious humor, adult slapstick humor, and a couple of racist jokes, the film is able to entertain. While watching this, you'll have a good time in fact, except after when you leave the theater feeling that nothing really special happened in the movie. The film goes through a similar plot line as several others before, and character development feels a little flat, especially Sudeiki and Aniston's love story, which escalates very unrealistically. Despite this, the film is certainly has the laugh out loud moments that comedies similar to this have (Jennifer Aniston's reaction to the Friends reference at the end was definitely hilarious).

Being a avid reader and interested in the books, the film was definitely suited for me (as were the Harry Potter film franchise). Aug 20, 2013
What DisneyToon's (the creators of the Tinkerbell series) are able to accomplish in their most recent animated fare "Planes", are to have made a visually beautiful animation film, with some slapstick humor that may appeal to the younger audiences. While "Planes" may succeed in this, and while it may be enough for some young children, the narrative does suffer. The film's narrative is downright predictable, and a little disappointing, considering that the "Cars" franchise used a lot of its universe to its advantage, while "Planes", uses its universe mostly for puns and stereotypes. While characters like Dusty, may be easy to root for, his story is definitely a little over the top cheesy as the film moves along; which ends up to be a sort of weird and awkwardly structured romance with Dusty and a Indian racer, with them flying around the Taj Mahal. Another thing to note is the film's humor, which would have benefited the film, but unfortunately doesn't work. Most of the humor depends on the characters, which, to me, felt a lot absurd, as many of the characters are a lot cliche to the type of underdog film this is. Though this may seem like negative criticism, the thing that "Planes" does well at is try to get your emotions through this underdog story, which I thought was well done. Though this may be the case, "Planes" has some heart, animation, and slapstick humor that can entertain, but unfortunately is pushed down with its mediocre narrative, absurd humor, and cliche elements.

Down in the dumps when it comes to comedy, "R.I.P.D" isn't the worst thing out there, but definitely is far down the road in the several of mediocre films this summer. The premise is average, the character development is barely there, leaving only comedy in the dust. Though the film isn't the worst, its a far cry from anything due to its ultimately dim-witted and formulaic story.

"Epic" shows promise for at least the first twenty minutes, until it reaches the average and ordinary cliche's that many kid movies have attained, with nothing more to impress. While the first twenty minutes proves to show a generally convincing personality from the protagonist, MK, the storyline for her falls a little flat afterwords. The film then follows a generic good-versus-evil story MK falls in love with a misfit, the good guys win, bad guy loses; with the saddening issue to how it never takes deep twists and turns. Despite this, the character relationships are done fine; the relationship with MK and her father work out well, while relationships between MK and her love interest Nod, or Nod and his mentor Ronin, feel a bit too familiar. Along with this, the humor gets a bit tedious after the well done first twenty minutes occurred, similar to "Despicable Me 2", and drags out a bit. Though the story is awfully predictable and generic, the emotional connections and plot elements are well done at times, and the ending result adds to a little (very little) bit higher than average. I may have been more optimistic on the first film, but the second is just downright outrageously old. With its cliche roles of the smarts, handsome looks, and the charmer; the characters in "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" are downright old and boring, and even worse as they add three more talking chipmunks with similar personalities as well. If David Cross' character wasn't horrible in the first, his role in the second is very dull and boring as well, with his already cliche character before turning horribly annoying. The plot of the story is obviously kid-friendly, as it takes on the role of high school that hundreds of films have already taken, and is nothing new. "Dreamwork's Turbo" suffers greatly from its already weak premise, unoriginal tale, and unsatisfying group of characters, and still struggles greatly to convey a message. The film greatly struggles with making likable characters from the start, as the protagonist Turbo is hard to like due to his whiny and weakly developed personality. Turbo's growth through the film is a basic one that doesn't develop as well as it should have, with moments of humor interacting into awkward moments of slight emotional edges. While the humor derives mostly on characters, it isn't that laugh out loud hilarious that you could have gotten from films like "Despicable Me 2" or "Monsters University", and that the fact that this movies tries to be hilarious but evidently fails to show extremely funny humor (example as only a few chuckles were found in my theater in Turbo, as opposed to bawling laughter while in MU and DM2) Along with the humor from the characters, a lot of the supporting characters are not even developed well, aside from Turbo and maybe his human counter part Tito. The themes are very (seriously) close to those from Pixar films "Ratatouille" and "Cars", and while compared to those, it is fallen back way behind. While the themes from "Ratatouille" and "Cars" are put into emotional depth with characters, you aren't as emotionally attached or even care for the ones in "Turbo". Starlight Plaza isn't as deeply inspired as Radiator Springs, and Turbo isn't as strong as a character as Remy, which leaves this film nearly impossible to be matched with movies similar to it. The main idea to "Turbo" is that "dreams can come true to everyone", which to the opposite of "Monsters University", but in this case, the message isn't able to influence the audience due to the case of Turbo's situation. Turbo's ability to get a radio attached inside of him and his physical speed is obviously aimed to reach the younger audience and to get a couple of laughs, but interacts negatively to the message because of the fact that it tells us that the impossible can happen, even though impossible. The message in "Monsters University" counteracts the one in "Turbo" much better, because it tells us the truth, even though the truth hurts. Turbo's positives are that its wonderfully animated (except the strange looking snails that are obviously prone for kids to like) and that its got some humor in it. While "Turbo" has its downsides, you may want to watch it on DVD instead of theaters, as "Monsters University" and even "Despicable Me 2" are much better than this film. While "Turbo" may be not as tight and well executed as it could have been, it is most likely that it will be the third best animated film of the summer (not that optimistic on Planes and Smurfs 2).

Giddy, hilarious, and wonderfully animated, "Wallace & Gromit in The Curse of the Were-Rabbit" succeeds all my low expectations with a "two-thumbs up" review. With its moments of joyous and sometimes rather scary scenes, it leaves audiences to have an enjoyable time at this movie. While not as high as Pixar's highest films, this claymation film is sure to delight children and their adults.

Having watched this film first on DVD, I sure wish I didn't. With its stunning scenes, its wonderful script, and surprising depth, "How to Train Your Dragon" truly is in itself a winner. While its story tangles with the "Aladdin", "Avatar", and several of other tales told before, the story still shines with its wonderful creative spin off of its book series. With several more positives than negatives to the story, its a fun and new tale to everyone.

"Rio"'s lush landscape and vivid score can make up for its cheap humor and kiddie elements (alot of pop culture references). While its story isn't that bad, it is somehow a little wasted from its complete use of comic relief characters (I mean, a dancing bird with a had. Seriously). The love story between birds aren't that bad and the story to bring them together because of science is rather an interesting concept, except to the fact that the story revolving around that concept isn't too well executed. It would have been interesting if "Pixar's Newt" came out to compare with this film, but unfortunately Newt was cancelled with concern of this film. "Rio" is fine, but could have dropped all the pop culture references and the comic relief characters, to have become much better.

With its charms of a kid fairytale-like film, "Ponyo" is visually inventive and wonderfully scored. With its story towards the more confusing, and weaker side, it's charming characters are sure to help win over. To watch Ponyo is watching not Miyazaki's finest, but probably most charming.

"Tarzan" brings a beautiful heartwarming tale, and while it does lack the strength in the middle sections of the film, it's still great fun. With bright beautiful visuals, a catchy theme, and action-filled, "Tarzan" can soar.

"Hop" is pretty hopeless, despite its sweetness but put with little to no care. It's script is very weak, but its sure enough to entertain children. While I didn't completely hate Hop, there was little to like about it.

"Grownups" may not be put in too depth and wit, but from its top notch comedians such as the works of Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, the film is able to pass with its humor. With actors playing on wonderful parts and a group of crazy middle-aged men acting like kids, "Grownups" can be idiotic to most, but an enjoyable one at that.

The quality produced in total from "Home on the Range" is probably Disney's worst in a while, as it does lack from originality and its simple, not any deep storyline. With its predictable parts it does lack much than anything, but its music and animation is nice so it doesn't deserve a zero or one. Well, at least Disney shaped up after "Chicken Little."

"Shrek 2" is just a hilarious comedy hit, and while it feels somewhat similar to its original, new characters do shine Puss in Boots as an example. It's formula to appeal to adults and children at the same time works, and while it may feel a tad too familiar to the first; it can still appeal to all ages.

While not even close to the past of Disney, "Meet the Robinsons" is average as to expect, but its still quirky and fun at times. With strange characters like time-traveling dinosaurs and singing toads (annoying, but bearable), it's not too bad, but the main characters could have used alot of more development on them. It does have blandness in it with story and all, but you can sometimes feel some sympathy towards the main character, so thats okay. While it's tepid and all, kids will love it, but Disney fans would probably be annoyed how its Disney's third film in a row that fails to deliver much.

"Tales from Earthsea" is once again, wonderfully animated by Ghibli, and despite its usage of violence and finess lacking and its confusing plot elements, its rather not that bad. While it's not as warming other Ghibli movies, it still conveys enough action that it's not considered bad.
