Mina the Hollower8

I enjoyed my time with this game but it fell short the lofty initial reviews for me. The gameplay is tight, great combat and platforming. Personal preference but I’d prefer a 16 bit art style over the 8 bit. Story was serviceable but forgettable, as was the music. Most of the fun for me came in “boning up” my character. It’s just a shame your levels max out so quickly. Battles started to feel repetitive and pointless after I had maxed out 2/3rds of the way through my 20 hour play through.
This game needs a mapping system of some kind! You’ll get lost, you’ll want to revisit locations you’ve already cleared, and you’ll have no idea where they were. Hollow knight, Zelda, Metroid, all show me where I’ve been, why can’t I here? Just makes backtracking so tedious. Kudos to the devs for so many was to modify gameplay to make it easier or harder. That’s a really cool way to let more people meet the game on their level.

Enter level, meet new bug, eat bug, throw bug onto back, into the mud, into an apple, solve basic puzzle, wash and repeat. That’s it. That’s the game. There’s no sense of progression, no goal, no reason to even really play. None of the mechanics introduced are all that standout. Some feel downright bad. I’m just sorta left scratching my head at this. It’s the worst Yoshi game yet and I own every one. I didn’t have high expectations for this and it still came up way short. It’s great Nintendo is keeping up a steady stream of releases for Switch 2 but it’s beginning to feel like quantity over quality. I met every creature in the pre and post game content in 10 hours. I’m just glad I bought the physical version so I can recoup some of the $70.

This isn’t really a game, it’s a movie with some interactive point and click sections. I’m an 80’s kid who came of age in the 90’s just like the story and it sorta kind hit me in the feels. The soundtrack was unfortunately mostly forgettable or unknown. Pretty decent writing and some funny one liners. Visually pretty dated, could’ve easily been made 10+ years ago. Even the story is pretty freaking basic. I can’t really think of one single thing it did great. Not really worth $20 for 2 hours to roll credits. I don’t see how anyone could call this a 10/10 masterpiece. All the negative aside, I still didn’t hate my time here. It’s fun to think about your own stories of a similar time and how one day was our last of something and we didn’t even know it. All in all I can’t hate a game for tapping into that 80’s/90’s nostalgia cause who doesn’t miss the simple days, just game wise it’s pretty boring.

I’m tired of switch 2 editions. This package should be $60 at most. Stop paywalling a simple switch 2 resolution bump behind $20 DLC. Mario Odyssey was a free update! Charging $20 for the DLC is fine but I would not recommend anyone spend $80 if they’re new to the game, that is just absurd.

Such a perfect game for the switch. Both versions run well but switch 2 holds up better under intense battles.

This is just peak survival horror. Sure you can debate if RE2 or RE4 are better but it’s irrelevant, it’s cut from the same cloth. While other developers barely struggle to put out games this generation, Capcom drops this and laughs in their faces. It’s a technical marvel and it’s hard to comprehend how adaptable the RE engine is. We’ve never seen a high end game launch like this on all modern platforms, day one, that pushes each of those hardwares to their unique capabilities. Switch 2 DLSS? PS5 Pro PSSR 2 PC DLSS w/ full path tracing all with so much polish. Rarely does a game like this have something for everyone. Lifelong series fans, new comers, stealth, action, it’s all covered.

Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora9

One of the most beautiful natural open worlds ever created in a game. The variety, size, and detail of the biomes is truly mind bending. The third person update really made this a joy to play through. I wish this game had been better received because more people should play this and live in Pandora for awhile.

Metroid Prime 4: Beyond5

I’ve never played a Metroid where the world felt so compartmentalized. This feels like the campaign of a FPS shooter. Where’s the exploration? The interconnected level design is just missing here. The story is pointless. The overworld is pointless. The extra characters are pointless. What carries the game is its atmosphere and technical performance. It is also surprisingly short. Given the difficult development and deadline to make it on the almost dead switch 1, that’s not much of a surprise. I’m just glad the game came out at this point. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is the last entry in the prime series.

Pokemon Legends: Z-A1

This would’ve been a great game if it was released 20 years ago. It has less polish than a free to play phone game. Gamefreak knows they can release anything and the Pokecult will eat it up. By all means, if you live and breath Pokémon no matter what, enjoy! I just wish we could get a Pokémon game that tried to appeal to everyone not just the people who will buy it no matter what. Guess it doesn’t matter when it will sell 10 million + copies.

Hollow Knight: Silksong7
Sep 17, 2025
15 hours in and I'm trying hard not to bounce off of this. I completed Hollow Knight without too many low moments but Silksong is just wearing on me. I love the exploration of this game, but this has really become more about combat and punishing bossess and enemies. A few different difficulty options wouldn't hurt anyone. Do I really need to redo the same difficult platforming stretch 50 times to the boss thats going to smoke me in 4.5 seconds till I can dial in it's pattern 50 deaths later?
Beautiful atmosphere, playable on ANYTHING, level design, PRICE POINT!, all 10/10 on those fronts. Just a hardcore game for hardcore people.

Donkey Kong Bananza: DK Island & Emerald Rush4
Sep 17, 2025
Don't be an idiot like me and blindly give $20 for this. I loved the base game so much and have such a soft spot for DK that it was a no-brainer for me buuuuuuut ~ THIS SHOULD HAVE BEEN END GAME CONTENT INCLUDED in the 2 month old release. Imagine if peach's castle in Mario Odyssey had been DLC?? DK Island is a nostaligic museum for 30 mins. No new bananas, just the new mode. Nintendo is just bending their fans over a this point and only discouraging new ones all at the same time!

Nintendo DNA runs deep in this game. Throw back to the sand box days of Mario 64 yet folds in layers of Mario Odyssey and even Zelda Tears of the Kingdom. Less linear than an Astro Bot or Mario 3D World. There are just so many new and fresh things going on here, it’s rare we get this anymore in the modern era. Truly a masterpiece in game design and a technical marvel to even pull off. Nintendo should be commended for not playing it safe in their first big new platformer since Mario Odyssey. Digging around the world can get a little tedious but it’s usually self inflicted because the completionist in me cannot stop smashing everything. I’ve found I have to make myself stop and focus on the objectives at hand. Welcome back DK.

Mario Kart World6
Jun 7, 2025
I probably had unrealistic expectations for Mario Kart World. As the first Mario Kart in 11 years and launching as the premier launch title for Switch 2 how could you not? Nintendo doubled down too with the $80 price tag heard round the world. Well the dust has settled, it’s still Mario Kart. The free roam mode which I think many hoped would really revolutionize this generation of Mario Kart feels to be nothing more than a lifeless add on. The challenges scattered about are fun enough but there is absolutely zero reason or reward in doing them. There’s not even an organized checklist or map to fill in, it feels like a tech demo. There just isn’t much flow to exploring the world. There’s no setting way points, you rarely know which direction you’re headed, there’s not even a ton of landmark references because the draw distance isn’t great. Grand Prix has switched from 4 lap races to 1 lap races with driving between courses filling up that space, it’s just not as fun. The roads aren’t nearly as fun as carefully crafted, tight course design. Knockout Mode is the most fun and it’s very rewarding to stay alive in a race that lasts close to 10 mins. 24 racers on course is mayhem but in classic Mario Kart form, you have to actually try to be in the back half of the pack, fall back and you’ll be getting the best items and the leaders literally slow down. 150CC is the fastest mode available and often times it still feels slow. I was able to gold trophy almost every Grand Prix cup in 150cc on my first play through. There’s just not much here for a single player. Online multiplayer is by far the most fun I’ve had. I’m sure if you had access to a bunch of friends to play with then multiplayer would be as fun as ever but I’m 40, my friends stopped playing Mario Kart after N64.

Mario & Luigi: Brothership8
Nov 25, 2024
There's certain people that a Mario & Luigi RPG just isn't going to click with, no matter how good it might be. If you've enjoyed any of the earlier Mario & Luigi games or any Paper Mario games for that matter, you will likely enjoy this game. At it's worst, this game is a 7. Anyone who says otherwise either had unrealistic expectations or just isn't the target audience. There's a 35 hour main story here if you don't do a single side quest and know what you're doing in an RPG. I wouldn't call it a "kids game" for that reason. Yes it starts slow, yes it over stays its welcome, yes its too wordy & yes it holds your hand too much. Once I got rolling, I really enjoyed finding new islands, solving their problem, and repeating. I wasn't stuck in any one place too long and felt there was plenty of variety and reason to keep "plugging" along. The battle system is really great, while I wish there were more attack and defense options. Learning to nail your abilities is fun. Learning to dodge new enemies is almost more fun. In true Mario & Luigi fashion, the boss battles are really epic. I found the pacing of difficulty to be great, you never need to grind for levels. The new plug system is interesting enough. The puzzles and platforming are also really fun and spaced out perfectly to break up combat stretches. I had zero issues with performance in gameplay. I am playing on a relatively new console if that makes any difference. I noticed some slowdown in some cutscenes, a menu, and one major boss battle which just didn't impact a thing. I thought the visuals were gorgeous enough and it performed exactly as you'd expect for a title on the 7 year old switch hardware. My only complaint here is truly load times, mainly into and out of battles. New hardware can't come soon enough. The story actually far exceeded my expectations though it really doesn't get rolling either till the second half of the game. For once, it actually felt like finishing a Mario RPG was worth it in this regard. Things get kinda dark, kinda twisted, and kinda creepy. The new characters are fine, nothing special, however its the returning familiar faces that complete it for me. Developer Acquire really set out to make an epic game so kudos to them. It feels like half of the dialog should've been cut from this game. It also feels like the handful of fetch quests scattered throughout needed to be cut. If they could've done that and kept the playtime in that 25 hour range I think it would've warranted a 9 from me and been better received overall. Dare I say I was more engaged in this title than I was Paper Mario & The Thousand Year Door? Just have realistic expectations, DO NOT BE IN A RUSH, and just enjoy this for what it is.
