ARK: Survival Evolved3
Nov 10, 2017
One of the industry's most promising titles turned into the single most heinous, unplayable, gruesome piece of software in history. This pathetic game studio have over the years finely tuned a CIA torture and interrogation purgatory that would render terrorist groups speechless and in envy. From blatant refusal to resolve horrendously broken core game mechanics for two years straight, to releasing full price DLC midway through the most pathetic Early Access process I've ever seen, to stretching themselves hair-thin across editions, expansions and console versions, constantly making useless content additions while the game's functionality went down the toilet, to not being able to wait until going out of Early Access before charging full price, to not even having a finished product on their hands when getting out of EA and finally making content modifications reinforcing ARK's focus on assaulting players through exhaustion and psychopathic degrees of grind, I not only believe ARK goes down as one of the most disappointing titles in history, but also, the team behind it are a bunch of sick, deranged individuals.

This is the kind of trash that is destroying the Steam storefront, but with a VR flavor to it. Is the "game" technically sound? Does it hide behind a smokescreen and present itself as more than it is? No, but at five dollars, that doesn't matter... because technically sound or not, you're paying five dollars for an unfinished tech demo. That's right it's not just a tech demo it's an unfinished tech demo. Fiddle with this POS five minutes and voila, one dollar per minute for the entire experience that you'll likely never run a second time. Screw these devs. They know what they're doing wrong.

Truly bland and ordinary shmup with questionable mechanics including the boring" feels like you're not even controlling the gunfire" drag-reticule-across-the-screen aim. Full of annoying incomprehensible non-translated dialogue - the back and forth banter is unbearable. A sub par game with extremely misleading reviews and an overall disappointing purchase. Metacritic ought to investigate how this ordinary 4/10 made it on the top of their ranks for a bit. Inexplicable.

Moon Chronicles: Episode 18

I had bought this title and loaded it on my 3DS just before going on a camping weekend. Late one Saturday night while in my tent in the middle of the pitch black dead silent woods (ok, dead silent... I have a television in my tent... I can choose to end the silence) I decided to turn my 3DS on and begin playing this title. Normally I game very little when I'm camping but wow... not sure if it's the setting I was in or the game or both, but everything felt perfect. I quickly took a huge liking in this game. It's a simple game. Basic graphics. Basic FPS, almost retro by comparison to modern day titles. However it's just simple plain fun and you have the free time on your hands, and the correct setting to play in, you're going to have a blast reminiscent of the good old Doom days. One big downside for me was the cutscenes are very low res and not stereoscopic 3D. That sort of tended to break my bubble and take me out of the mood. However as soon as the gameplay picks back up, you're in again... just wish the cutscenes were 3D. The controls for this game are PERFECT. Stylus-aim (feels like mouse aim) circle pad movement/strafe and L button to shoot. There's left-handed control schemes as well. The game is not short on content at all as it's super low priced and is clearly being delivered to us in episodes, so no need to affect my score with the game's length - it's fine. This gets an easy 8. Would get a 9 with 3D cutscenes.

The stereoscopic 3D is worth the price alone. Not to mention most OpenGL games have no other way of working in 3D than to have it built-in - as DirectX injection drivers normally won't work at all. Thanks to this edition I can play the title with full blown depth percetpion. I've been taken back to hell, this time in 3D, it's rattled me and I freakin' love it! Ok I don't love it to a 10/10 but to offset the harm done by idiots with keyboards who don't know any better and can't tell a good game if it hit them right in the face, I had to overscore a bit here.

Oh boy, oh boy, oh boy! Where the HECK did this little gem fall from?! I bought this game with absolutely NO expectations... I started with the demo to see if the game would run in S3D using Tridef Ignition. Sure enough put aside a few shadow issues, it worked! Go figure I'm not even a big fan of twin stick shooters - mostly because I'm a keyboard/mouse kinda guy, not able to carry the same skillset on a controller. Despite my shortcomings on control skill, this game is awesome. It's awesome, it's addictive, it's a blast. On your own, you'll have a lot to handle and need incredibly quick reflexes on your aim finger - often finding yourself completely surrounded with enemies all trying to rip your character's face off! It's a demanding twin stick shooter that carries with it a visual style that just makes you want to play "just another 15 minutes" over and over. It's hard to put the controller down. The visual styles are really a great fit. The characters are cute and the level end animations are funny. I even found Holly telling the boss "I'm here to stop you so uhm... stop it!" kinda funny... through small hints they unveil distinct character personalities. This was taking it beyond what I expected for 15$. The cherry on top. If you are a fan of twinstick shooters you should already own this title. If you aren't much for twinstick like me, do still consider this title. I did not regret my purchase.

Race the Sun10
Jan 21, 2014
Okay before I get started writing a positive review, I doubt the person who wrote the description of this game know the title well. This bares little to no relation to Starfox. This is a "reflex puzzle" type obstacle-dodging game with the endless run kind of model. This may sound crude and simple, but Race the Sun totally comes out victorious in two respects: First I've only played a few fully enjoyable titles like this - most of the time you risk stumbling upon shovelware with this kind of game - and Race the Sun is an impeccable implementation of the genre on each and every aspect of its gameplay! It'll get your full undivided attention and give you many, many "whew" moments right off the bat. Secondly this game could've gone bad with its design style. You'll often see artists try the simplistic approach only get bland results instead of just simplicity. Race the Sun nailed their simplistic design, using modern graphics capabilities like post processing effects and lighting to clearly show a simplistic design really does not have to be bland for one bit! At the price they sell it it's a no brainer. It's a casual play so you can add it to your library even if you're currently going through other bigger titles. This is a nice side-game to have to fill in those voids where you need a break from the massive large-story type gaming.

Being a fan of any type of space/fantasy shooter I'm glad I finally got this title. There's a steep learning curve given the controls are hard to master, as the turret and rate of fire can be slower than you'd want it, but the style will grow on you as you adapt, especially if shooters are your thing. The difficulty is high but the reward is good. The card system can be a blessing or a curse depending on your luck. All in all very much worth the 15$! Note, one should play this title with a friend: it even supports Download Play for your friends who don't have a copy. It's clear co-op mode will give you a huge advantage and it's also clear the game was designed with difficulty levels adjusted for more than one player.

The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds7
Dec 4, 2013
First off, this is indeed a good game it would be unfair to immediately compare it to other titles in the franchise. On its own it's a solid 8/10. However as part of the Zelda franchise maybe it's because my previous experience was with Ocarina of Time 3D, but this new title falls horribly flat. OOT had this charm about it that even when you were stuck, you'd have something else to catch up on, another attainable goal, something to kill time with until you figure out the next roadblock. This new title is tedious all the way. When you're about to enter another dungeon and yet again notice there's this damn skill or item you didn't get yet, and have to scoot your butt across the damn map to get what's missing, or have to question every bloody NPC in a mile round radius to get your next damn clue, it's not fun anymore, it's like a chore. It's like homework. You'll get your moments where the game does this less and becomes Zelda again for example when you embark successfully on a dungeon, things get cool. But as soon as you walk back out those doors... oh boy. This one seemed to work for those who play the whole game in one sitting. I don't game like that. That's why I have a portable. I play in 15-30 minute bursts about 7-10 times a week. It's the time I have. This game's flow makes it virtually impossible to get on a roll at that pace, an sort of requires me to pull off a whole hour in one sitting... which shows something's wrong with the game. Disappointed in this title big time. Also it looks like it's been wildly overrated even before its launch. A really frustrating thing I'm told by ones who raved about this game: "So do like in the original and go there..." I didn't play the original. Was this game only designed for those who finished the SNES version? Really... and no, it doesn't feel like I'm exploring something new even without having played the SNES one. It just feels tedious and I wanna finish things as quickly as possible to get some fun playtime again in a dungeon.

Sonic: Lost World4

While the game looks great and has that awe inspiring bright Sonic color scheme, the game play is terrible, the auto aim control does whatever the hell it wants and the flow gets frustrating after a very short amount of time. I truly despise games that ask more of the player than the mechanics of the game can afford. The camera is possibly one of the worst recent implementations of a camera in a 3D environment I have ever seen. All in all, avoid this title.

Nano Assault EX8

This is truly a little gem of a title. Having owned the retail version I downloaded this one and sure enough it's been propped up and improved over its predecessor. If you like the all-out shooter genre, this title is not to be ignored! Great visuals, cool music and excellent use of stereoscopy (except for one of the microcodes in Cluster 4... it appears the stereo image is reversed in that one) make this a shooter that's intuitive, presents good challenge without being frustrating and actually keeps you playing after you finish all the clusters.

Here's a great example **** that clearly benefits from the 3DS's stereoscopic capability. When your task in the game is to fly along a morphing path while avoiding collisions with large blocks, it really helps if the game throws in depth perception, helping your reflexes by giving them that extra edge. Despite the game's simplicity, it's addicting, challenging and fun.

Being fairly experienced with stylus-point shooters (Kid Icarus Uprising being my favorite, having over 40hrs of play in the title) I can say that this title is just... broken. I cannot seem to, for the life of me, even complete the very first mission. The enemy threat is random and the markers barely help as sometimes you're only given 1/2 a second to react. This is a decent small-game idea gone horribly bad. I am wondering if they even tried their game port on the 3DS at all.

Super Mario 3D Land9

Wow, I thought I was fed up with Mario titles. I thought I had grown past them. For some reason I ignored this title's existence for the 1st year owning my 3DS. What a freaking mistake! A co worker set me straight by, after a discussion about this game, lending me the cartridge for one day. Needless to say when I had to hand it back to him, I also got myself a copy immediately. I couldn't let it go anymore. The use of the 3DS's amazing 3D capabilities is simply exceptional. Level design is brilliant. Camera movements are virtually perfect. While the Mario sidescrollers have gotten old for me, this kind of title is a reminder Nintendo are still veterans of good level design and great game mechanics and can still manage a hit like is Super Mario 3D Land!

This is definitely one of the year's greatest surprises for me! Never did I expect a Luigi's Mansion title to be this darned fun to play! Loaded with content and a tasty, fun online multiplayer feature, equipped IN FULL with download play so you can gather your friends who don't have the title and still all get to have at it, this game will bring hour upon hours of fun and has just enough variety and genuine gaming difficulty that will keep you coming back like an addict!

This game desperately calls for the exact same controls as Kid Icarus (on option of course, not imposed on everyone) as it's begging for it. Being a keyboard-and-mouse kind of gamer I really hated the camera controls in this game. It ruins the entire experience, which I can clearly see is nothing but barrels full of awesome. I can see, from the point of view of someone who likes this game, why they adore it so much... but I can't seem to get a groove going for the life of me. I always end up with the camera pointing away from the enemy. The "L" taps don't respond as expected. The button configs are super awkward. I tried an hour of the demo, then hours of the game itself... yet I never ever found my groove for this one. Not enough control options.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed4

Sadly this title, which could have been great, is ripe with severe technical issues ranging from frame stutter, to stereoscopic ripping and even to outright system halts (as in, total crash requiring a system reset). It's really a bummer because what the game is trying to be is actually quite a lot of fun... when it works well and holds together for more than 15 minutes. Normally you'll find yourself after a few tries finally having a good run and about to advance to the next goal... only to have your 3DS crash during the last lap. Multiplayer, solo player... doesn't matter. The thing is eventually going to crash. You can actually tell when it's about to happen it appears this game leaks memory to the point where it slows down and when these slow downs become frequent you know it's about to blow up on you.

Donkey Kong Country Returns4
Jul 25, 2013
I've rarely been put down so quickly by something that was presented as one of this console's "AAA" titles. The control is awkward, the game play is stale and the difficulty varies at complete random even within a stage itself. I could easily compare this title to Rayman Origins, but the only result of this would be I'd recommend Rayman Origins instead, period. Mario, Rayman, you simply handle this genre way better and Donkey Kong.... nnnnot soooo muuuuch (Borat voice).

Undead Bowling8
Jul 25, 2013
I'm actually impressed! Starting from the demo I already found this title quite addicting. This is one of those deliciously cool ideas brought up by a crazy imagination mixed up with a penchant for zombies. Killing zombies with a bowling ball and the player is fair game for the zombies... don't let em get too close otherwise.... For the price this title is quite a fun play and despite limited content, it's the bowling action that seems to help the immense replayability of this very casual title. The kind of game you can fire up even when you don't have much time to play; bash a few zombies and get back to what you were doing after.

Chain Blaster8
Jul 25, 2013
For its price, this simple and straightforward shooter is worth the buy. I had for a long time hoped that a shooter in the likes of Metal Torrent would be developed for the 3DS, and this is totally IT! Don't expect anything too complex in terms of content like say, Star Fox or Nano Assault, but if you're into straight up shooters this one is a title to pick up!

Kid Icarus: Uprising10
Jul 24, 2013
This game is the best possible title on the 3DS: best soundtrack, best effects, most extensive content, by far best controls, and the very best replay value of the entire 3DS library. From learning the controls to increasing difficulty, unlocking the goodies and going through the story, this title keeps you coming back. The first few sessions as a beginner are rough because you will inevitably need to adapt to the controls before you're fully submerged into game play... but once that's over and done with it feels just as powerful as keyboard and mouse. Then you can increase difficulty and really get your senses going. Rarely does a game require every single gamer skill to be at 100% without getting too frustrating. They hit a perfect balance.

Resident Evil: Revelations5
Jun 20, 2013
In regards to the PC version of this game, not only is it falsely advertized stating "improved visuals", but the mouselook control was put into this engine via hackjob and it just feels like something that's been forced out of a handheld and onto computers.... oh yeah; right. It is. Taking the game from its stereoscopic 3D original and downgrading it to monoscopic 2D without even building the option to enable 3D if one has the hardware is a gigantic downgrade. I don't care how many more polygons you render, how many more colors the palette can actively use it's garbage because the depth perception or even the option to have it has been removed. To me, having loved the 3DS version this was a gigantic letdown that tore 40% of what the game had to offer away from the experience. What's really a letdown about the downgrade to monoscopic 2D here is this is a desperate move by Capcom to cash in over their failed Resident Evil 6 release. It's turning out to be more of a slap in the face to the gamer than anything else. It's been rushed, downgraded and it's essentially the very same game with nothing new to offer.
