Alwa's Legacy
9
User ScoreSwitchindiefix
Oct 10, 2020
Buy this game, play this game, love this game. My only complaint would probably be, I wish it was longer so I could enjoy it for longer. The Game is about 10 hours long if you’re rifling through it, but could be 15 hours if you try to collect everything. Alwa’s Legacy is a gem in a genre that can churn out below average experiences. The game feels like it was carved from stone. What I mean by that is, they’ve thought of every scenario to ensure every playthrough feels natural. It can truly be non-linear. The order of which you discover items will not match the way I discovered items, or areas for that matter. Similar games will have NPCs that will say something that could spoil part of your adventure, or seem out of place.

Hades

Oct 10, 2020
Hades is a triumph **** and shows what early-access indie games should be in 2020. Supergiant Games is one of the best indie game developers there is and they have shown their class and skill with Hades. Everything in the game is perfect from its art and music, to combat and narrative. There is not one bad thing I can think of about this game, it is simply perfect. If you are skeptical of the roguelite genre, Hades is the one game that will get you addicted to them. Its progression systems are rewarding, making you want to have ‘one more run’ rather than throwing your controller through the screen after a death. The story, though simple at its core, is enthralling and makes me want to keep playing over and over to find out the conclusion to Zag’s story. I think this has a lot to do with the excellent writing of Greg Kasavin and the amazing character designs of Jen Zee. I’ve become so interested in Hades that I’ve been Googling and reading up on Greek mythology, to get a better understanding of how all of these Gods, Spirits and Monsters intertwined. In my eyes there is no question that Hades is my Game of the Year. Honestly, if we didn’t live in a world where graphics rule awards, I would say it should be Game of the Year, that is how good it is. If anything in this review has piqued your interest about the game, please, please try it out. It is truly an outstanding, once in a generation game that should be played by everyone from heaven to hell.

Underhero

User ScoreSwitchindiefix
Mar 24, 2020
Underhero is my favourite indie game of 2020 so far. The story was both funny and touching, the world and game as a whole is stunning and the soundtrack rocks. The combat is novel forcing you to get good at it. It feels rewarding and by the end of the game you feel like a god when in battles. It’s fair to say Underhero is a mix of different genres and is influenced by a variety of other games. Nevertheless, it does everything well. Platforming is challenging but fun and the RPG elements add a nice feeling of progress, making you feel like the hero when you started off as a minion. If you have any interest in Underhero you should buy it. The only reason I’m not giving it a perfect score is because I encountered a potentially game ending bug. However, I was playing an earlier version of the game, so hopefully when you get your hands on this indie gem it should already be fixed. [Link omitted]

Wonder Boy Return Remix is a decent endless runner but sadly doesn’t reinvent the platforming genre. There’s enough here to keep you challenged for while, but I still wonder what this game could have been if it had the features that the PS4 version had. I just can’t understand why you’d bring out a remixed version of the same game that was on PS4, with less extras that its previous release… However, if you love Wonder Boy games then there’s still a lot to love here and I did enjoy my time with the game. Even though it’s a little flawed in some areas and doesn’t quite reach the heights of some of the best platformers out there.

You will definitely get your money’s worth with this game because it literally costs next to nothing. It retails for three US dollars, but as of this writing, it is on sale for two bucks. You can pay a lot more money for much worse games than this. I originally wasn’t going to review Refunct. In the beginning, it felt like the kind of game that would come out of a “make your own 3D platformer in Unity!” tutorial. Super basic, no frills, barely a game. Over my playthrough, however, it won me over. The relaxing platforming, combined with the soothing music, created an atmosphere that I’ve never quite experienced in a game before. This is definitely a title that is worth your time and attention, and gives so much in return for how little it asks.

Katana ZERO

User ScoreSwitchindiefix
Jun 21, 2019
Halfway through, I wanted to give Katana Zero a score of 10/10. The gameplay is fluid and responsive, the presentation is great, the characters are well-developed, and the overall atmosphere is extremely well-done. It’s easy to get lost in the game world and immersed into your role as the Dragon, especially as things get darker and your dialogue choices become more tortured and emotional. Unfortunately, the confusing nature of the story (and the cliffhanger-ish ending, about which I won’t say another word) drags things down just a bit. I’m still getting all the DLC that comes out for this game, as I need to know how this story ends. Bottom line: this is one of the best games on the Switch and an absolute Indie Game of the Year candidate. Don’t hesitate to pull the trigger (or draw the sword) and download Katana Zero.

Jun 21, 2019
I don’t like point and click adventure games, but I did like The Mystery of Woolley Mountain. It’s easy to see a lot of love and care has been put into this game. The voice acting and humour in the game are fantastic, even if the story looses its way by the end. Puzzles are convoluted enough to be challenging for point and click fans (you maniacs) but if you want to just enjoy the game, there’s a great walkthrough to help you along your way. The Shake the Vessel mini game was frustrating for me, however that might just be a one off thing. Maybe I’m just terrible at video games! Nevertheless, if you’re a fan of the genre you should 100% pick up The Mystery of Woolley Mountain. It’s $12.99 on the Nintendo eshop and I think worth every penny if you’re a point and click fan and like a bit of British comedy!

If you have friends to play with, Duck Game is an excellent party game with good online and hours upon hours of gameplay. The arenas and weapons in the game are designed flawlessly. They ensure chaos ensues with every round and that you’ll be screaming at your friends down the mic or elbowing them on the sofa. As a single player experience though, the game is lacking. At the time of review, finding online games was none existent and the single player content isn’t worth your time.

What do I think of Venture Kid? It is very reminiscent of the Mega-Man games with its level structure and always ending with a difficult boss. With said boss rewarding you with an item that empowers you to beat the next boss. Each power helps you move little closer to your goal, but I would have liked to have seen more creativity in some weapons. There’s a range of different modes to play such as Classic, Adventure and Survival mode. As well as one hidden mode to unlock. There’s even extra incentives to keep playing after you’ve beaten the game. For instance there’s treasure hidden in every level and even achievements to unlock. My only real negatives are there are no online leaderboards for speed-running runs or survival mode. Furthermore, I would of liked to have seen extra content with a more lasting appeal. The game does offer 3 difficultly settings if you want to increase the difficulty of your runs. However, for most veterans of platforming titles, Venture Kid will be completed in few hours at most. It’s not the most in-depth platformer and takes inspiration from other well known platforming heroes. Nevertheless, I can’t deny that I’ve enjoyed my time with Venture Kid. It’s a pleasant romp through some good old fashioned platforming. And with a cheap price point, I think its worth picking up.

My experience with Vaporum has been a positive one. The last dungeon crawler I played was Monkey Tavern and I found that game to be less than impressive and got tired of it pretty quickly. However, Vaporum feels like a completely different experience, which is made better thanks to its interesting story and unique gameplay mechanics. Honestly, I’m hard pressed to think of something I don’t **** knit-pick, the lack on inventory space can be annoying as it can become full pretty quickly. Furthermore, there is some tedious backtracking in the game, but now I’m really splitting hairs! I’ve enjoyed my time with Vaporum. It’s great dungeon crawler and RPG. It’s now officially my new favourite Switch indie title that I want a physical edition of! Do yourself favour and pick up Vaporum if you love dungeons crawlers or RPG’S. Especiallyif you love levelling up, using powers, collecting weaponry, solving puzzles and defeating enemies. Add to your wishlist or better yet just pick it up. you wont regret it I didn’t! I really enjoyed my time with Tangledeep and I hope to enjoy many more experiences with it. That’s kind of the beauty of Tangledeep, it’s a rogue-like worth playing again. The entertaining battles, diverse job classes and awesome environments to explore make this one of the most enjoyable rogue-like experiences to date. Yes menus are a bit clunk and overwhelming, and there are some questionable design choices. But if you’re willing to look past some dirt to see the gold you will find Tangledeep shines in two genres that have become very saturated. If you’re looking for an awesome nostalgic rpg, then Tangledeep is for you. If you’re looking for a tense, yet rewarding rogue-like experience Tangledeep is for you. If you aren’t a fan of either, and you’re not one for nostalgia then even still give Tangledeep a shot. It might just win you win you over.

Ape Out takes a lot of unique and unusual aspects and smashes them all together to make an amazing game. The music is like nothing I’ve ever seen before in a video game. Your senses will be put in a trace with each level’s hair-raising drum beat and bright visuals. It feels like an arty version of Hotline Miami, but still keeps a brutal aspect that pays homage to that game. Determination is needed to beat the game, so expect a death count way into the hundreds. However, I never had a death that felt annoying. I was always willing to hit ‘retry’ and fling my hairy ape body at my enemies to gain my freedom. Plus, depending how good you are, the game can be beat in about 4 hours. Ape Out is well worth a buy on the Nintendo eshop, so stop monkeying around and get it bought!

The time I spent with the game before the fifth chapter was a lot of fun. It has a cool RPG mechanic that makes you feel like you’re progressing through the game. Moreover, though they were delivered in a weird free loot box way, some of the skins of the planes look awesome! Bare in mind though, that the mission in the game become repetitive fast and flat out frustrating towards the end. If I was to buy the game, I would wait for a sale.

If you are a brawler fan or have been at anytime in the past, I highly suggest Wulverblade to you. Its mechanics and controls make it feel so satisfying to play. However, the thing that I love most about the game is that it represents what an ‘indie’ game is. You can tell that it is a passion project with all the love and detail put into it. Its genre is niche and its story is niche. Nevertheless, I think it should be commended that Micheal Heald made the game he wanted to make, regardless of it appealing to a mass audience. What’s incredible is that though the game may not appeal to everyone, it seems to have sold very well on the Switch, so I’m happy for Micheal and Fully Illustrated. Critically, the ending really did disappoint me and thats why I couldn’t give Wulverblade a perfect score.

To conclude, Saturday Morning RPG has a unique concept that I haven’t seen in an indie game. The story and writing perfectly fits the 80’s cartoon theme, even down to their faults. For fans of 80’s nostalgia this is a perfect game. It’s packed with easter eggs and things for you to do if you don’t mind repetitive fetch quests and combat. The mix of 2D sprites and 3D polygons is interesting, but for my taste makes the game look dated and amateurish, when actually it runs well on the Switch and is a quality game. Though its price point is quite cheap, I would suggest skipping it or waiting for it to go on sale if you want your 80’s nostalgia trip. For more Switch indie reviews, check out Switch Indie Fix.

The Last Day of June is a beautifully crafted game with a mature and heartbreaking story that will leave an impression on anyone who plays it. I’ve thought about it a lot since finishing and have told everyone I know who likes games to check it out. What lets The Last Day of June down is its lack of direction. I feel like if there was more of a focus on the actual game parts of TLDOJ then it would be a 10 out of 10. When I bought this game I had no expectations of it what-so-ever. For its price it felt a bit like a throwaway game, something you can buy on impulse, play for a little bit and abandon if it doesn’t immediately get its hooks in you, That’s exactly what happened to me and probably what happened to you if you bought the game when it first came out. Nevertheless, having taken a few hours to play through the game, I have to say that you should go back and beat Kamiko! Though it may be repetitive, I think that its combat and basic puzzles are perfect for someone who wants to play something short and beat a game in one sitting. The price of the game reflects its play time, however, just because it is cheap doesn’t mean Flyhigh Works skipped on the quality of their title. The art and world looks wonderful, the music is great and the game is fun. I hope we see more added to Kamiko or a sequel announced in the future. In conclusion, I think Oceanhorn: Monster of Uncharted Seas is a good Zelda spiritual successor that lacks its own personality and identity. Unfortunately, playing the game through a second time and looking at it critically has lowered my feelings about the game. However, for some people this might be ok. Maybe you played Breath of the Wild and really want a Zelda fix? Then Oceanhorn is perfect for that, but I would personally like to see a less generic story and combat mechanic in Oceanhorn 2. Nevertheless, I think in other respects Oceanhorn punches above its weight, especially in its art and music. This shows that even though a game may be smaller in scope, that important things should not be skipped, proving Oceanhorn’s and Cornfox & Bros’s quality. I would suggest Oceanhorn to players who liked Blossom Tales: The Sleeping King, as that too is inspired by Zelda (but does a better job of having its own character and identity). There was a lot about Vostok Inc I liked. It's 80's art style makes it stand out against other indie titles that tend to go towards a pixelated art style, which I think is oversaturated the indie market. It's first few hours are so fun to play! You are making progress, exploiting new worlds and making tons of Moolah. However, the game quickly becomes a grind that does a poor job of guiding the player through that grind and bringing them out the other side. It took me over 20 hours to beat this game! I'd say half of those hours was spent wasting time, destroying asteroids to keep my managers happy and waiting for my Moolah to go up. If the game was over in 10 hours I would have left feeling I got a return on my investment. However, the grind made me feel like Vostok Inc was a chore or a job, something I had to chip away at to finally reach the end. For more indie reviews on Nintendo Switch, google Switch Indie Fix.
