SoulCalibur VI
9
User ScoreSpitbot
Jan 4, 2019
Why the SoulCalibur franchise is so often overlooked by fighting game veterans and rookies alike is something I will never understand - and if anything can prove the worth of the series, it's this game right here. The fighting mechanics are as solid as they've ever been, and the game feels smooth as butter. It retains that "easy to learn, hard to master" feeling, which ropes new players in and keeps the old ones engaged. The roster is fairly small, but each character feels incredibly distinct, and it's always rewarding to try new ones out instead of forcing yourself to stick with a "main". There are bad characters, sure, but you'll find yourself itching to play as them as well, even if it's just out of curiosity. If none of the character designs appeal to you, you're more than welcome to build your own from scratch - The infamous character customizer, Create A Soul, is back, and the possibilities are endless. Whether you're trying to put together an original fighter or your favorite cereal mascot, you have more than enough tools at your disposal to do so. What's better is that all of your creations are permitted in online matches (even ranked ones) so no one's stopping you from taking on the world as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man. Just in case you needed icing on that wedding cake, the game contains two single player modes - Soul Chronicle, which follows the sometimes thrilling, sometimes mind-numbing lives of the main cast, and Libra of Soul, in which you bring a custom character on an RPG-esque adventure, taking place after Chronicle. The two modes are far from perfect, and both lack in the presentation department, but c'mon... You're not here for the narrative, are you? All in all, SoulCalibur VI is one of the most impressive, finely-crafted fighting games on the market right now, and if it looks the slightest bit interesting to you, I'm sure you'll have a blast with it. If you're new to fighting games, start with Libra, as it's the only mode in the game with a tutorial. If you're an experienced soul, don't be afraid to build an abomination and start pummeling people online right out of the gate - It's tough to have more fun than that in a video game.

While Injustice 2 might be the best Netherrealm game yet, at least from a technical standpoint, it also suffers the most from WB's scummy business practices. The core gameplay is still a ton of fun, if a little slow, and the campaign looks and feels great. The Multiverse, a refined version of MKX's Living Towers, is a great addition, and provides consistent PvE content when you don't feel like getting brutalized online. So what's the issue? Netherrealm Studios have churned out ten additional characters since the game's release, and you have to pay for ALL of them. Some of them are crazy good and can counter popular strategies, but if you don't fork over the dough to buy them, you're put at a disadvantage. This doesn't even factor in "gear", stat-altering cosmetics that unbalance casual play, or "source crystals" a premium currency used to change the color of your character's costume. Even those who waited for the full-priced edition that includes all the DLC characters have to deal with the economy of a mobile game, and it's depressing. It pains me to give this game such a mediocre score, but the core mechanics, as solid as they may be, are bogged down far too much by WB's penny-pinching. If you have to play it, I recommend you buy a used copy of the Legendary Edition to ensure you get the most complete experience without directly supporting these practices.

Star Wars Battlefront 2 is perhaps the most conflicted I've ever felt about a video game. The multiplayer is fun. It's not the next Overwatch, there's not much depth to it, but it keeps you entertained. There's enough content here, it covers all three movie trilogies, and all the future DLC will be free (however, the rate at which it's coming out is questionable). There's even a single player campaign this time. It's pretty mediocre, but it's better than nothing. If that's all there was to it, this game would be a solid 8/10 in my book, but as I'm sure you've heard, the game follows a pay-to-win microtransaction model. Those who forked over real money got better cards right off the bat - cards that give you a blatant and unfair advantage. EA pulled the plug and you're no longer allowed to buy loot boxes, but in their wake they've left a progression system built around their money-grubbing scheme that's incredibly harsh and unfair to those who haven't paid for microtransactions (which is now everyone). I want to love this game, and I still have bouts of fun with it here and there, but I can't recommend you buy it. Once EA "fixes" the progression things might change, but I think the damage is already done. There's always Battlefront 2005...

It's a Pokemon game. I could end the review right there, because chances are, you already know what you're getting into, but assuming you've never played one of these massive critter-collecting RPG adventures, this is a good place to start. There are over 800 Pokemon, it's a blast to play, and there's post-game stuff to keep you occupied after the 20 - 30 hour story, but if you've played Pokemon before? You might be happy to know that they've mixed this one up a bit - The gym system has been overhauled, your old favorite Pokemon are back with new forms, there are new, ultra-powerful moves that can only be used once a battle, and yet... It feels like it's different for the sake of being different. The replacement for the gym system works, and it works well - I enjoyed it, don't get me wrong - but there was nothing wrong with gyms in the first place. The Z-Moves are nice, but they don't feel as rewarding or cool as Mega Evolution (and the animations get kinda tedious, too). They tried to write a good story, which I applaud them for, but it really isn't anything special. I know nobody cares about the plot in these games, but it gets in the way - This game has the worst tutorial since Black and White. At it's core, this is still Pokemon. All of these games have problems, and while I have a few gripes with this one, it's more or less what you've been playing since 1996. So, brand new to the series? Jump right in, the water's warm. Seasoned veteran? It won't surprise you, but I'm sure you'll have some fun. Looking for something brand new? You'll probably be let down.

Skylanders Superchargers is the fifth installment of the Skylanders franchise that I forced myself to finish because the sixth one is out. And I regret it. The gimmick is vehicles, and it's a pretty stupid gimmick. You need a land, sea, and air vehicle to experience everything the game has to offer, but the game only comes with a land vehicle. I didn't buy any additional toys (because I have far too many kicking around as is) so I didn't get to experience two thirds of the vehicle segments. that angered me at first, but the ones I could play were fairly generic and bland, so maybe it's not such a bad thing that I got to avoid most of them. Battle mode is absent yet again, as is it's former replacement, the Kaos Challenge thing from Trap Team. The little rhythm minigame is gone too, but I don't think it was ever the most popular addition. I barely even remember the plot, even though I finished the game just last week, so it couldn't have been great. Your collection of traps from Trap Team is usable, but they only serve as weapons for your vehicle. I stopped using them halfway through because they barely made a difference. The traditional Skylanders gameplay is pretty much unchanged, so there's that. There's also an online mode, but I couldn't get it to work. The game is still backwards compatible with old figures, so your existing collection should carry over just fine. Overall, very disappointing. I'd avoid it if at all possible.

Is Overwatch for you if you want an immersive single-player experience? No. Is Overwatch for you if you want some dumb fun? You know it is. Overwatch is an objective based six on six hero shooter from our pals over at Blizzard. You need to be connected to the internet to play, and the only single player content is in the form of bot matches. Again, if you need a campaign, this is not the game for you. With that out of the way, the multiplayer is sooo good. I'm forty hours in, and I'm still having a blast. There are 22 characters that fit into 4 classes who all feel unique, and only like, 13 maps, but let's not dwell on that. All the game modes are objective based (no team deathmatch or anything similar) so you have to stick with your team instead of wandering off alone. Team composition matters too, though playing six of the same character is admittedly fun. The game is a bit light on content right now, that's true, but Blizzard has stated that all future heroes, maps, and game modes will be free, so that problem will fix itself later on. Even so, the game might not be worth it to you at full price. If it looks interesting, but you're not super into it, wait on a price drop. In conclusion, pretty darn good, just not too much to keep the average person busy for hundreds of hours.

Transformers: Devastation

I'd like to preface this review by saying that I haven't been a "true" Transformers fan since Revenge of the Fallen. I've watched some of the TV shows, new and old, the 80's movie, and all the Bay movies but DotM (but let's be real, no one likes those). I also used to play with the toys, but I think my Mom donated them all years ago. So, coming from someone like me, how's Transformers: Devastation? This game's from our friends at Platinum games (I've never played any of their stuff, actually) known for Bayonetta, Wonderful 101, Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance, and Madworld, that really gory Wii game, among other things. I've heard nothing but praise for them, and despite my high hopes, I really enjoyed Devastation. It's like a normal action game... But with Grimlock. The controls seem pretty standard, but since you're a Transformer, you can transform. holding the R1 button does just that, while briefly pressing it acts as your dodge, and well timed dodges slow down time. Square is a light attack, and triangle is a heavy one, preformed by weapons you can purchase with virtual currency, or loot from enemies corpses. You can also sacrifice your unwanted weapons to beef up the ones you actually use, which is nice, because I ended up with like, ten pairs of Thermal Gloves. L2 aims your ranged weapon, and R2 fires it, as per usual. the campaign takes six or seven hours to beat, but there's also a set of challenges you can unlock. All of the characters feel nice and different, but I felt that Optimus was by far the best. Of course I wanted to use Grimlock, because he's Grimlock, but I couldn't seem to get decent results out of him, or really anyone else. The plot feels like it was ripped straight out of a cartoon, in the sense that it's not very good, but we're not here for the deep, immersive story line, now are we? Overall, a pretty good game. It's free on PS Plus this month, so grab it if you can.

Another great addition to the Ratchet and Clank series with a few minor annoyances holding it back. The gameplay is as fun as always. If you've played the PS2 trilogy, you know what to expect, as it hasn't changed much, but if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? The graphics are pretty good, especially considering this game came out in 2007, and the plot isn't half bad either. Sure, there are no trophies and there's no multiplayer to speak of, but I don't think either of those things are truly necessary in an R&C game. What does bug me on the other hand, are the motion controls. Yes, Sixaxis / Dualshock 3 controller motion controls. There are puzzles and falling sections among other things that require you to move your controller around, and it gets old fast. There's even a weapon you control by tilting your controller in the direction you want the projectile to go. Why? Alongside the weapons system the series is known for, Tools of Destruction adds "Devices", which I don't even understand the point of and I hardly ever found myself using. I know I'm ranting at this point, but don't get me wrong - this is a great game that I would recommend to any PS3 owner.

Uncharted 4 is a fantastic game that I'd recommend to any PS4 owner. There really is something for everyone here, including a great story (arguably the best of the series) awesome action and set pieces, and online multiplayer. I don't like to bring up graphics as I don't think they matter, but if they're your thing, this game is absolutely gorgeous. I died a few times because I thought I was still in a cutscene, but I was actually supposed to be playing. I have a few nitpicks, though. The distance you need to fall in order to die is very inconsistent, leading to many deaths at the hands of safe-looking jumps, and the multiplayer has micro transactions. They're pretty minor and shouldn't bug you too much, but it kind of irks me that Naughty Dog thought that it'd be a good idea. There's also going to be single player DLC in the future, implying that you'll have to pay extra to experience the whole story. Again, these are all nitpicks, and you would be doing yourself a major disservice by not owning this great game.

Excellent return to form for the Ratchet and Clank series, just as good as the originals, if not better. It keeps a lot of things from the first game, but mixes it up enough to be it's own thing. Lots of new and returning weapons, level variety, puzzles that I still **** at after all these years, but I can overlook that, funny writing... And they've brought back Challenge Mode, (Fancy way to say new game plus) giving you tons of replay value in an otherwise fairly short game. The story could also be a bit better, but I'm sure the upcoming movie will flesh that out a bit more. Overall, a fantastic game, recommended to PS4 owners of all age groups.

Broforce, a side scrolling shooter with a retro style, is great fun, if not a little short, and not to mention, incredibly buggy as of now. It's really creative and enjoyable, throwing Satan off of a cliff as an 80's action hero with "Bro" squeezed into their name is really fun, and it was one of the only games I've ever played that made me laugh out loud on purpose - not by means of a funny glitch or anything - but wow, is it ever broken. I like the Super Nintendo-ish style, but why is it so laggy? The FPS drops all the time, and it's infuriating for such a seemingly simple and non-graphically demanding game. The controls lock up for a few seconds after you spawn as well, leaving you vulnerable to enemies. I have no clue why this wasn't spotted and sorted out, as it's probably the most maddening thing about the whole experience, and the load times can be atrocious too. if you can see past all of that, you'll have a surprisingly entertaining game on your hands to occupy you for a little while. You should grab it while it's free with PS Plus, but if you can't and the game's been fixed by the time you're reading this, I'd say it's worth your 15 bucks.

Not really, but it was a nice little side game for a while, and I definitely enjoyed playing it. The save system is really weird, you need to manually load your game from the menus, but after you figure it out it shouldn't be too problematic. Would I pay much for it? No, but if you come across it cheap at a yard sale or something, maybe you should give it a try.

Revised review - after the January 2016 update. Star Wars Battlefront is fun, but is plagued with too many issues for me to really recommend it to most people. But first off, I have to give credit where credit is due. The graphics are gorgeous, and the sound is good too (aside from the voice acting, of course). It really immerses you into the Star Wars universe. Game play is enjoyable, but far from perfect. Lightsaber fights are a huge letdown - take turns smacking each other until one of you dies, or catch the other player off guard, not letting them land a single hit on you, or even turn around for that matter. The shooting isn't bad, though. The game's online mode consists of nine game modes, (Ten with the free DLC) but I only really enjoy three or four. Anyone I've asked said it was the same way for them, so you'll most likely choose an handful of favourites and disregard the rest. The single player on the other hand, is an absolute joke. It'll last you maybe an hour or two before you leave it forever. The worst part, however, is the DLC. The 50 dollar season pass is advertised on the main menu, and a bunch of new maps and heroes are promised, essentially making this a $110 USD or $130 CAD game. This is ridiculous on it's own, but a sequel is reportedly already in development, meaning EA couldn't care less about actually creating the content people have already paid money for. The game is fun. I want to really enjoy it and play it consistently, but in it's current state, it's a bit of a train wreck. A recent update did fix some issues and added more free content, so EA must be trying something new. I'm happy to bump the score up to a 7 instead of a 6 because of that.

For one, there are only four vehicles as of now, and not all that many maps. Even though it launched just over a week ago and is free for PS Plus subscribers, the game's online multiplayer seems VERY abandoned. Full games are a rarity in my experience, and I usually get paired up with people way above or way below my skill level. It's fun, but is it worth the asking price? As of now, maybe not, but is it worth playing free if you have PS Plus? Absolutely! It's just weighed down by too many problems to be a must buy for most people

The Mortal Kombat series hasn't disappointed in recent years, and Mortal Kombat X is no exception. The game is beautiful for one, cracking Scorpion's skull with your fist has never looked better. It's heaps of fun, whether or not you have PS Plus and access to multiplayer. Offline players will have the story mode, however short, local multiplayer of course, and towers. There are classic towers - ten fights against increasingly difficult opponents, Test Your Luck towers, my personal favourite, where every fight has random modifiers thrown in to make it more chaotic, and living towers, that change constantly as long as you have an internet connection (PS Plus isn't required here, to my knowledge). You'll also be able to join a faction. Pretty much everything you do earns points for your faction, and the faction with the most points at the end of a certain amount of time gets big rewards. If you have PS Plus, you'll get all of what you've come to expect from an online fighting game - 1v1, King of the Hill and stuff like that, along with some new game modes like online Test Your Luck. I haven't experienced much lag or any disconnects while online, but there are quite a few spammers and other unfair players that will ruin your match. As for characters, there are around 29, new and old, which doesn't seem like too many at first, but each character gets three variations, essentially tripling that number. If it still isn't enough, more can be obtained via DLC, including old favourites like Tanya, and licensed characters like Predator. Overall a great game that I'd absolutely recommend.

I've owned a PS3 since 2012, but criminally, I never owned an Uncharted game. Then, around a month ago, I picked up a PS4 that came bundled with Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection. At first, I didn't want my first PS4 game to be remastered last gen games, I wanted to experience the new stuff, but I gave it a whirl anyway, it was all I had after all. I have now completed all 3 games, and they just might have been some of the the finest pieces of media I've ever laid eyes on. The games are all amazing - the story, the graphics, the shooting, the characters... I was trying to think of complaints for this review, and honestly, I don't think I have any. I haven't had this much fun with a game in years, and I play a lot of games. If they were selling one of these games at this price I'd absolutely recommend it, but you get three, plus the beta to the multiplayer for Uncharted 4! (I haven't played the beta yet, as I don't have PS Plus, but still, free stuff.) I've read a lot of reviews on this site in my time, and I know some people hand out a lot of 10/10s to games they enjoyed. Nothing wrong with that, but I'm a bit harsher when it comes to reviewing. As of now, I've never given anything a 10/10, but this collection deserves that prestigious score. I don't think I could be any happier with this, and I'd recommend it to anybody ever.

I, a rabid BIONICLE fanboy, enjoyed this game. However, you, possibly not a rabid BIONICLE fanboy, may not. You see, it's certainly a competent game, even if you aren't into the toy line, it's just that knowing about the source material will make you appreciate the game on a whole other level. So the game is an FPS starring your favourite plastic heroes getting kidnapped by plastic bad guys, and now you have to play as a nameless grey plastic good guy to save them. Once you've finished the opening cut scene, you'll be given access to the six elemental regions of the island, as the game lets you choose the order you want to play them, Mega Man style. At the end of each region you'll take part in a boss fight, bringing you one step closer to saving the others. One thing those familiar with the toys are sure to pick up on after a few levels, is the fan service. So many iconic things from BIONICLE's past make this game even more fun to play in my opinion, and it's completely non canon, so crazy and impossible things are allowed to happen without screwing with the official story. One criticism iv'e heard is that the graphics are bad, but the sharp edges and blocky character models suit BIONICLE well - it's how the toys look after all. so if you like BIONICLE, this might just be the game for you. If not, you might still enjoy it, and might find a new love - colourful lumps of plastic with ridiculous names.

A fun game, especially if you like Star Wars or LEGO, but not without it's flaws. The GBA versions of LEGO games are never properly 3D because of hardware limitations, which isn't a huge problem, as the game is unique in this sense, but the non-isometric controls are terrible in my opinion. It's an easy fix, just head to the options menu, but before I knew about it, I struggled with all platforming segments due to the characters jumping all weird. This is the first LEGO Star Wars, so you only get access to levels based on the prequel movies (Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith) and, since the game was released right before Revenge of the Sith, it may have been rushed to coincide with it for maximum profit, and seeing how Attack of the Clones has 3 levels, I feel like it was. After completing levels, characters become available for purchase, and by the end of the game, you'll have access to buy all 15. for a LEGO game, that isn't very many, though I guess hardware limitations could be to blame, and there are even characters that function exactly the same as other characters, making collecting them all less fun and rewarding. But one redeeming quality here is the difficulty. Most LEGO games are pretty easy the whole way through, except for the occasional tricky boss or puzzle. Here, however, the game gets progressively harder throughout the different episodes. I found Episode 1 to be a cake walk, but Episode 3 actually put up a good fight, which was a pleasant surprise. So there you are: not a bad game, and it's dirt cheap online, so if it looks interesting to you, it might be worth a buy.

After finding a cheap copy of this game online, I looked it up to watch and read some reviews. Critics weren't really into it, but I thought "Y'know, this looks like a game I would enjoy regardless." and I bought it. I thought it was a pretty good game, certainly better than the internet makes it out to be. Destroying vehicles and buildings with a rocket launcher mounted on a truck never ceased to amuse me, and I had a big stupid grin on my face as I did it. The game isn't without it's flaws, however. For one, it's awfully glitchy sometimes. I went off a huge jump, and I was soaring through the air, passing all of my earthbound opponents with ease... Then I got stuck inside a building and lost. One time I finished a level and couldn't go on to the next level for no reason, and had to quit to the PS3 menu to get it to work. Once, the game just froze during an important boss fight. The game also becomes frustratingly difficult at seemingly random intervals. Multiple times I thought the game was almost over because of the huge difficulty spike, like I was nearing a final boss or something, but no, it was just the game being ridiculously hard for no reason. Maybe I just ****, but it seemed like they wanted to make the game feel longer by making me spend more time on a level. But if you can overlook these issues, you'll find a hidden gem, yours for the taking for a measly price online. So if you're into racing games, I'd highly recommend Full Auto 2. If it looks interesting, give it a try, you have nothing but a couple bucks to lose. There's a local multiplayer mode if you have some buddies around, but I'd recommend playing at least some of the single player to unlock some cars and guns first. The online mode's servers were shut down, however. So at the end of the day, my point stands: A great game if you're a fan of the genre and aren't picky about it's issues.

You obtain cards by entering those code cards into your account, or buying them with virtual money earned in-game (Though you're given a few free starter decks). If you're trying to make a deck with nothing but the cards you've purchased in-game, the game is probably going to ****. but if you're a Pokémon TCG veteran, this is a great alternative to the game when you're alone.
