Absolute cinema. Fun gameplay, compelling characters & worldbuilding, good writing with natural dialogue, and an interesting style reminiscent of The Venture Brothers. A German associate of mine described the experience as "Very American and vulgar. But not the bad kind of vulgar to the degree of Vivziepop's 'masterful' writing."

Pokemon Legends: Z-A5
Oct 19, 2025
From a subjective standpoint it's "fun", but this is hampered by some of the worst game design I've seen in years. The day/night cycle is horribly handled, so every five or so minutes the map forcibly resets and whatever you're fighting at the time despawns, which has cost me numerous rare Pokémon. The parkour is boring and tedious, with many buildings only reachable through specific routes that are difficult to discern at times. The rogue mega battles are done in a giant arena, and you have to DODGE and RUN a lot, while also ATTACKING the rogue mon. You you can only do ONE (attack, by holding down the left trigger and your A B X Y buttons transform into your moveset, or run and dodge) which is inexcusable. A company with more money than God has no excuse to be so consistently low-quality.

I've been one of GF's biggest critics since the Gen 6 Battle Frontier fiasco, and if not for the rushed development I'd call this a step in the right direction. Good mon variety (aside from some uninspired designs like "Flamigo") and freedom to catch & explore like Legends Arceus shows that they've learned from some of their mistakes. However, the lag and removal of Megas/Nat Dex ensures this game will never stand among the greats like SoulSilver or Emerald.

Translation's a little wonky and the latter half of the story is a bit generic, but the characters are fantastic and the combat is fun. It's essentially Digimon Adventure for older teens/adults and it does its job well.

The tone's all over the place and it feels more like Zero Escape 4 than its own thing, but the writing and characters are fantastic. It's no Disco Elysium but if not for 999 it'd be Spike Chunsoft's best mystery game so far.

Cowboy Bebop meets Megas XLR, this game is every man's dream. Charming characters, fantastic artstyle, good writing, thrilling combat & ost. My main gripe is the pointless padding in the form of running down a 10-second street every time you go somewhere, but it's not too bad overall. It can be ignored with a bit of tolerance. The game is essentially a stylish visual novel with RPG gameplay elements and executes it well.

The entire reason this game exists is to serve as a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment, one of the greatest CRPGs of all time, but it greatly falls short of the mark. Tyranny copied its combat system from this and it's just as bland here as it was there, and Chris Avellone was barely involved (even he says the story is too linear and uninspired). A good RPG doesn't need two hours to draw the player into the world, and I can't give this game any more time than that.

Abysmal writing to the point that people are literally removing the game's dialogue files. For example, see Lilith. The game opens with Marcus hailing Lilith as the hero that "saved Pandora over and over" even though half the events of 2 were directly her fault after she disfigured Handsome Jack and got Roland killed. Pre-Sequel all but spelled out that her obsession with revenge against anyone she feels was even remotely connected to Jack and thus Roland's death was leading her down a dark path, but this plot point is ultimately abandoned despite it being central to the character they spent the entire game shilling. Amara is this game's only redeeming quality, but the story essentially ignores her being a Siren.

Battle mechanics and gameplay are solid, although type variety is low and there don't seem to be any dual-types which is disappointing. Like others have said it can be pretty puzzle-heavy at times but it doesn't detract from the experience and it's much more tolerable after the first dungeon. Monster design, graphics, and OST are charming, while it borrows from the Pokemon formula it's distinctive enough to have its own identity and so far I'd argue it does a better job of it than Nexomon & Temtem. The reduced multiplayer component compared to other games in the genre is a slight letdown but it's easy enough to find all the mons without trading & the battle scene is alive and well.

It's a pretty solid experience, it's not perfect and the gameplay is fun although a bit repetitive at times, but the atmosphere is super chill and it can be challenging when you least expect it. It's not for everyone but it actually feels like effort was put into this one. In the early game the mon variety is a little shallow but it gets much better as you go. I'd put it on the same level as Pokemon Emerald, it's not a masterpiece like HeartGold/SoulSilver but it has charm and style.

One job. They had one job. Copy and paste Platinum while sprinkling in bonus content like new Mega Evolutions. And they couldn't do it, so we're stuck with a $60 game with less content than one released 13 years ago.

Star Wars: The Old Republic6

This game truly is the epitome of mediocrity. Of the eight storylines available, only two of them are actually well-written and engaging (Sith Warrior & Imperial Agent). Not to mention how it butchers the lore of previous entries in the Old Republic series in order to make the mediocre Jedi Knight storyline look more important. Aside from that, it's pretty much your basic MMO.

It pains me to do this, because this game truly had potential. The characters and worldbuilding were interesting, the execution was enrapturing, and if not for the most glaring issues it could've been something to rival the Phoenix Wrights and Danganronpas of the world. First and foremost; it's short. The game costs 1/3 of the price of the average AAA title but a decently astute player can clear it in two hours and still be in Steam's refund frame. Secondly; the game revolves around rooting out people possessed by demons, and the given list of demons makes it too easy to eliminate suspects that don't display the required motives, contributing to the game's length (or lack thereof). The game is too obvious with the story it tells, pulling down the mystery element too much despite it being the game's main selling point. Since it's more of a visual novel, there's little replay value to speak of but while other similar games make up for this by giving players dozens of hours of mysteries and character interactions, this game fails miserably. Lastly, the ending twist ends up making the world less interesting when you leave it than when you came in, and I cannot imagine a greater failure of storytelling. In summation, wait for a 75% sale.

This DLC was more of a tip jar for Tynan than a full-on expansion in the beginning but it did become worth the money over time as it adds a lot of variety in terms of quests, new bionic body parts, new clothing, new weapons, etc.

Regardless of the game's current lack of optimization, I can't wholeheartedly recommend it in its current state. Like others have said, the alleged RPG elements are surface-level at best and CDPR suddenly shifted focus to "action-adventure". The limited character customization allows you to adjust your genitalia but not muscles, weight, or height. Too many corners have been cut and lost content like the spider-bot, Techie skill tree, and wall-running pretty much locks you into one playstyle. I hope that we receive the product we were promised in the near future, and I will delete this review for a positive one once that occurs.

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Complete Edition9

One of the best RPGs to come out in the past couple years. After the disappointment over Pokemon Sword & Shield I was in the market for a new monster-collecting game to fill the void and this did an excellent job. Excellent story, lovable characters, good monster variety, and a challenging difficulty puts this game high on my JRPG list. Only issues I'd say is that the translation can be somewhat lacking at times, and the lack of dungeon variety resulting in a lot of the same dungeon visuals repeated through most of the game, but these are relatively minor gripes. Despite being a Vita port the game provides console-level quality and is more than worth the $50.

Pokemon Omega Ruby7

As a lifelong fan of Pokemon who got their start playing LeafGreen & Ruby, I went into this game with high hopes. Now they weren't necessarily dashed but out of all the remakes released by Game Freak to this point this is by far the weakest (until we're inevitably disappointed by Gen 8's lackluster Sinnoh remake). While it offered an expanded story, improved contests, and a few new Mega Evolutions the lack of a Battle Frontier and reduced difficulty makes it feel like a casual rehash with less content than Emerald, a game released a decade prior.
