Sid Meier's Civilization: Beyond Earth9
Oct 25, 2014
I personally think Firaxis has done a great job with this Civilization game. The new (and old) system really make it something more than Civ V was, or to me at least. I also really dig the futuristic aesthetic, I love how you're now building an alternate future instead of an alt history. On itself, it's a phenomenal game. Great 4X with some really interesting systems. But since it's another game in the long lineup of other civ games, we're gonna have to compare it to Civ V. Whether or not it's better than Civ V is debatable. They're very similar but slightly different. Some may think Civ V was better, others may think Beyond Earth is better. You're gonna have to look for yourself to see if you like it or not. I personally love it!

A very cool and original concept perfectly executed in a mobile game, that's rare these days. It has a very nice looking art style, nice music and just generally good sound design. I actually feel bad for the developer, because of all the free clones, this is not getting the attention and credit it deserves. The only minor problem I have with the game is that there seems to be an issue with scaling. I have a 720x1280 (Android) screen and the designs on the tiles have jagged edges. Besides that, it's a very cool game.

I think the game is great. It certainly has it's issues, but none of them really break the games experience to me. It has some technical issues. The AI is a little bit broken. Everyone seems to be complaining about how bad the AI is, I haven't had to many issues with it. A guard got stuck on a door once or twice but it wasn't gamebreaking. Also, some of the voice acting isn't properly normalized, which is annoying but again, not gamebreaking. The stealth in this game is really well flushed out. It's satisfying to sneak around the place and there are some really good mechanics. Like the light/dark indicator or the swoop ability. I also thought the atmosphere was really nice. The fog looks amazing and the detail in the world is astonishing. The game just oozes atmosphere with it's dark and gloomy graphics style. The game seems to have a fairly bad reputation due to average and even negative reviews. I don't really know why this is. I mean, surely there are some people that dislike it because it's nothing like the original Thief or they were expecting things like the weapon variety Dishonored had. Which brings me to a point which annoyed me the most, stop comparing this to Dishonored. The two are completely different games. In some way similar but mostly not. Like combat. This is well done in Dishonored but not in Thief. Eidos deliberately didn't make the combat interesting since Thief is a game that focuses on stealth, that means there should be no to minimal combat involved. All in all, Thief is an enjoyable experience. It has it's problems, but none of them are gamebreaking and almost all of them are forgivable when you look at how good the rest of the game is. Like the atmosphere and stealth.

This game is amazing. An absolute blast to play, even better with friends. Games are short, but the replayability is great. There are so many different outcomes. I can imagine myself playing this hours upon hours just to see which choices effect the outcome in what way. The art is amazing as well as the music. The only real criticism I can make is that there are probably a lot of people that wouldn't want to pay $10 for this. I personally think that the price is justified by the art and all the stories the game has to tell.
