Dune: Part Two6
Mar 8, 2024
Visually amazing. Worth seeing in theaters before it leaves. Perhaps a bit overrated, but it’s still fresh in people’s minds. The script and acting was mixed quality. I’ll expand upon that: Austin Butler was highly oversold as a villain. People said heath ledger joker level good. He was not even close. If anything he was a drag upon the rest of the movie. Secondly, the chemistry between Zendaya and Chalamet is nonexistent. Between lazily written dialogue to emotionally shallow delivery it’s amazing we know they’re interested in one another. It’s a fun movie, but the books are better (as always).

Hit and and mostly miss. I think it gets more love than it deseeves. A few good scares and the inevitable desire for a consise story the entire time.

Who decided to green light a slow paced slasher/comedy that makes you wish you were watching the movies it’s constantly referencing? Poor writing, worse acting, annoyingly typical characters, lame premise.

I wasn’t a fan of the first film beyond the cgi that was at the time very beautiful and novel. This is yet another gross amalgamation of cherry picked qualities and generalizations of indigenous cultures. It’s Dances with Wolves,Pocahontas, and Fern Gulley rolled into one un-fun “adventure.” This seems like the type of film Lefties will love and feel empowered by the whole drive home in their SUV.

Black paranoids will love it. The Truman Show meets Get Out. An ode to blacksploitation films of old. Good for a few laughs and almost genuine mystery in the first 1/2, but it’s ultimately a rinse and repeat of modern race politics. It’s full of violence but there’s a clear distinction between how it portrays black on black violence (as sad, tragic consequence only induced by outside, ie white, forces) and black on white crime (as necessary and cathartic). When sci-fi begins to reaffirm the mainstream narratives to justify violence then it’s time to question whether it’s actually sci-fi and not just budget propaganda

This movie proves critics are full of it. This is great storytelling and deserves more love. Is it perfect? Nope, for me it’s Paul Giamatti’s stutter isn’t very good and takes me out of it, but he’s still a pro at drama. The lore leaves me wanting more.

The best part of the movie is the first five minutes, and that’s basically a redux of the opening to the first film. Majority is filmed in front **** screen and that’s evident. It’s a cash grab at the end of a franchise. Don’t waste your minis or time. I can’t believe someone put their name on this pile.

We Need to Do Something1

At first it’s intriguing, and has some seriously weird scenes dispersed among a broader film full of fluff that no one really gives fly F about. Characters are based on tired dysfunctional family & social tropes and possess the interpersonal depth of a sheet of paper. 1/4 of the way through it cuts to a flashback concerning the teen girls self harm “boohoo woe is me” wiccan-lesbian relationship; get ready because it‘s a recurring theme playing into the situation the family is *presently* in. Does Sierra McCormick only play damaged girls with an alternative lifestyle? Seems like a decent actor who’s just shoehorned into this character over and over again. You’re really not missing anything if you skip this one.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery6

Daniel Craig is the only part of this film that works. It’s more of a social/political statement than a clever “who done it.” Actor’s primarily played themselves to 1000%, the plot was weak, and there were far too many cameos from random famous people. Craigs comedic delivery was top notch and makes it worth a watch. They should’ve spent more time writing a good case rather than “no case” being the reveal.

It’s a solid modern-western, revenge shoot ‘em up. It knows what it is and doesn’t try to be more. The only thing questionable is the casting; Karen Gillan and James Ransone seem so out of place and have to wonder if they did single takes because they’re so bad.

It’s about as historically accurate as that last season of The Crown. I’m not sure why people are giving this such high ratings considering it’s inaccuracies and general quality.

You can’t inject wailing guitar riffs during emotional flashbacks or action sequences just because you have Bruce Willis in front of a camera. It’s not 1988 anymore, guys. One of his final movies and y’all do this to him? This director should be blacklisted.
Yet more writers who can’t seem to figure out that you don’t need written dialogue specifically to explain characters are a same sex couple.
What’s with the Italian playing the biker who can’t seem to keep his character’s accent consistent?
Why was this movie made?
Why did I watch the whole thing?

Well… it’s not as great as people make it out to be. It’s better than “Us” but not by much. It’s a lazy quilt made up of *a lot* of recycled UFO/SciFi ideas by better writers and cinematography of popular directors. It’s not just subtle nods either. Visually it is striking, but you have to try these days to make a cgi heavy movie that doesn’t at least look good. His fans, and clearly Peele himself like to think of him as a modern Kubrick or Hitchcock, but their works possess what most of his works don’t: a cohesive plot

Objectively a bad movie full of plot holes. This is another one of those films that you’re supposed to like more than I actually do. I watched when it originally came out and just recently got the nerve to stomach a second attempt… oof still bad. Hopefully Nope will be better, but I’m getting similar vibes tbh.

Worth watching. Weird, not overly gore filled, and solid acting. Plot could’ve used some more time on the burner to flush it out. Jeffrey Donovan is underrated and often put down as an actor and I think it’s unwarranted.

This film is in my Top 10. It proves less is still more in film. It deserves far more attention than it received, and the reviews whining about dialogue (that was actually decent and mostly necessary to flush the plot out)) or minor technological details concerning astronomy & astrophotography are probably the same folks happily being spoon fed by Marvel, Star Wars, or worse: Ancient Aliens. If you check you’ll see their reviews for this film are their only reviews, so take that for what it’s worth… It’s an indie sci-fi film based primarily on hard science and it punches wayyy above its weight. Keep looking up and try to be less cynical.

Visually pleasing, hardcore gore, unnecessary virtue signaling throughout the plot, victimhood porn-kills, not enough expansion on the broader lore. Worth at least seeing once and a decent addition to the franchise overall.

The Wandering Earth2

Though visually appealing, it's full of the cliches of Hollywood sci-fi movies in the last decade, and it falls flat with me and my sentimental desire for the *creativity* and intellectualism of the sci-fi of old. As others have already noted, this is clearly a warning to the West of China's ability to *cheaply* project soft power in mass media with the help of American content distributors. CGI and emotional appeals to various moralities can really shine up a Red turd. I ask myself why this film, at the time of this review, is trending in the U.S. while South Korean and Japanese science-fiction are so overlooked and I can only assume it's because most people won't make the effort to use a VPN, or even search for access to foreign streaming. We're just happy to have the same rollercoaster fed to us on a drip I guess. Reading a classic for a couple of hours would be time better spent, in my opinion.
