Most segments have a fair share of cheap scares, but they also delve into the art of the build-up, as if delivering a series of grim jokes with bloody punchlines. Consider it a 21st-century take on "Tales from the Crypt."

Scrappy and unsettling, V/H/S puts the majority of today's mainstream "scary" movies to shame.

the problem isn’t the format, it’s your perception. i completely understand that there are viewers who aren't convinced by the format of 'v/h/s'. its homemade aesthetic, apparent “technical poverty,” and improvisational feel can put off those looking for something more polished. but that's precisely where its charm lies. the film embraces roughness and imperfection, turning them into its identity. that sense of dirty, almost amateur realism heightens the terror and gives it an authenticity that many more polished productions completely lose. additionally, the fantastic and surreal nature of some stories adds a layer of narrative freedom: it doesn't feel limited by the laws of reality, and that works entirely in its favor. another of its strong points is variety. each recording is distinct, both in tone and approach, preventing the film from falling into monotony. overall, 'v/h/s' is an uneven experience, yes, but also a unique one. it’s not a film for everyone, and that's exactly its appeal: what many criticize—its “roughness”—is what makes it so special within the genre. for me, it's one of the best horror films within found footage. i give it a 10/10, especially recommended for watching at halloween. i will always have a fond memory of the first time i saw it. spanish: el problema no es el formato, es tu percepción. entiendo perfectamente que haya espectadores a los que no les convenza el formato de 'v/h/s'. su estética casera, su aparente “pobreza” técnica y ese aire improvisado pueden echar para atrás a quien busque algo más pulido. pero precisamente ahí reside su encanto. la película abraza lo tosco, lo imperfecto, y lo convierte en su identidad. esa sensación de realismo sucio, casi amateur, potencia el terror y le da una autenticidad que muchas producciones más cuidadas pierden por completo. además, el carácter fantástico y surrealista de algunas historias le da un toque de libertad narrativa: no se siente limitada por las leyes de la realidad, y eso juega totalmente a su favor. otro de sus puntos fuertes es la variedad. cada grabación es distinta, tanto en tono como en enfoque, lo que impide que la película caiga en la monotonía. en conjunto, 'v/h/s' es una experiencia irregular, sí, pero también única. no es una película para todo el mundo, y esa es justamente su gracia: lo que muchos critican —su “cutrez”— es lo que la hace tan especial dentro del género. para mí, es una de las mejores películas de terror que existen dentro del found footage. le doy un 10/10, especialmente recomendable para ver en halloween. siempre guardaré un recuerdo especial de la primera vez que la vi.

This found footage movie is amazingly awesome and spectacular! It is not perfect but its imperfections barely make this movie unwatchable. It has fun scares, creepiness, and gross-out disturbing imagery. It is only entertaining and a must watch for horror fans.

The film also plays to the strengths of the found-footage format, proving that sometimes the scariest things are the ones you can barely see. For horror hounds, this is required viewing.

Anthologies are risky. For every high point, there's often a misstep to match. But this indie compilation has enough inventive chills to interest any horror fan.

Viewed en masse, V/H/S can't generate the necessary suspense, and buy-in, to truly get under your skin.

Had V/H/S been a nasty jolt of three, it might have been memorable, but at nearly two hours, the gimmick punctures a hole in itself, causing ambience bleed-out. Recommended cure: a tripod

V/H/S is an example of the genre at its least compelling.

This movie has all the right creep-factor going on, while avoiding slipping into torture porn territory. It's an anthology, with the stories all having significantly different tone. The acting might not be the best in the world, but none of it noticeably bad, and you never get pulled into disbelief due to someone not delivering their part well. By the nature of the stories being anthologies, each gets in, sets itself up, and delivers in a pleasantly timely fashion.

Not excellent but not awful. This movie VHS was a grotesque and edgy film that was put together well but had some major flaws. The main downside of this movie is it ends leaving you confused and not understanding what happened.

I respect what it is trying to do, but as the first entry, it is incredibly rough around the edges—the low budget, the shakey cam. It looks like it was filmed in the late 90s/early 2000s, and I don't say that in a good way. The potential is there but I felt it could have been better with a slightly higher budget.

Hit and and mostly miss. I think it gets more love than it deseeves. A few good scares and the inevitable desire for a consise story the entire time.
