I thought that this game would fill the niche for a light, easily-accessible time-filler. The graphics looked simple but appealing, but discovered thru gameplay that objects are a bit too small to enjoy: the great majority of my screen was often black. The game mechanics and sound were as I had hoped, but I eventually lost interest nonetheless.

I like this type of game but just couldn't get into it, I think because of the juvenile and unappealing graphics. I wish someone could come up with a graphics mod I like, because I still think that underneath the surface is a good game. Switched to Dwarf Fortress instead.

Combat Flight Simulator 3: Battle for Europe10
Dec 27, 2019
I use this in order to play the WWI combat simulator mod Wings Over Flanders Field (WOFF). And the result is the best combat flight simulator I have ever experienced. Has better terrain graphics than IL2 Sturmovik though the aircraft graphics are about the same. Career mode is better done than IL2's and delivers an abundance of satisfying statistical data. The enemy AI is varied and excellent, much better than IL2's.

Crusader Kings II5

The horrible portrait graphics are a game-breaker: I dropped playing CKII and switched back to the original CK just in order to avoid having to look at CKII artwork. The other problem with this otherwise fine dynasty game is the marketing strategy to milk players for more money with the numerous DLCs. Gameplay itself is a 9-10 experience, though the game engine conjures up a little too much of a soap-operatic experience for my taste, in comparison to the original CK.

This game, the predecessor to Crusader Kings II, has far superior character portraits to CKII. Released 15 years ago, I still play this now and then (CK Complete, Steam version) . Can't say this about 90% of the games I have owned, including CKII.

Resident Evil HD Remaster6
Dec 27, 2019
A good remake of a mediocre game (by 2019 standards). Worth buying if it is on sale. However, Resident Evil games don't hold a candle to Arma 3 Ravaged, Arma 2 DayZ, or DayZ Standalone.

Resident Evil 27

A well put-together and very pretty game but the game-playing experience is only a 6. Essentially a third-person shooter on rails, you won't be favorably impressed if you have already played the likes of Arma 3 Ravage mod or DayZ Standalone. The boss fights were frustrating because it was a mix of realistic and fantasy behavior, though in the end one eventually figures out how to beat the baddie. But 20 tries before success takes the fun out of winning. Superior to RE 0 and RE 4.

This is the best RPG I have ever played, even better than Skyrim or the Fallout 3,4, New Vegas series. Depth of detail in recreating life in Medeival times is great. Melee combat system is most rewarding I have experienced yet at the same time has some problems. I played without HD graphics and was very pleased with the appearance of the in-game environment. Voice-acting was very good, as good as Fallout RPGs. The quest system is the best I have seen, tho not perfect. Impressive how well thought-out the game was. Only experienced minor bugs. The save-game system is not really a problem once you figure out how to implement it. However, inexperienced or passive gamers might find some aspects of game frustrating, thus mitigating their enjoyment of this gem. The game has so much detail and depth that it can be replayed (using a different style) without any problem.

A pretty good variant of a statistic-based game with a tremendous amount of replay value because there are so many eras and ways to play it. However, after many seasons of enjoyment in the space of a year, my steam-based version of the game force-updated and suddenly a couple of minor bugs sprang up. Plus my manager (my alter-ego) who had up to then been a perennial world series contender then slowly but surely lost his grip on what it takes spot and nourish talented players, leading ultimately to year after year of second division finishes. LOL it was as though the game was patched in such a way that it would no longer be enjoyable - the solution being to buy the newest version of the game ?

Fallout 45

A major disappointment, after having played both FallOut 3 and Fallout New Vegas. A soulless, by-the-numbers update of previous Fallout titles. After a couple of hours of gameplay, you realize that the landscape and the encounters found there, are crowded together like exhibits at an amusement park. You jog about 10 seconds in any direction and voulez! you come upon an encounter. You will meet ghouls in one place, jog 10 seconds and then meet bandits, turn and jog in another direction and come upon super mutants. How is it that they can exist so tightly packed together and not wiped each other out ? Like I said, after awhile it feels like you are at an amusement park going from one ride to the next.

A little too simplistic for my taste. Didn't enjoy the art style either, which didn't help matters. But I can understand that others might enjoy this offering.

The game has great graphics but the gameplay and the storyline didn't quite grab me. The zombie AI was not good and being able to vault around from building top to building top was a bit too much like being a superhero. Not challenging.

This game is a more light-hearted, non-subtle take on GTA. Can be a lot of fun but after years of playing Arma I found the combat mechanics a little too bland. I didn't quite like it enough to continue after starting a campaign.

Arma 310

The futuristic successor to Arma II. This is both a military sim and a FPS. It is supported by a tremendous modding community which for me means that the game can be twisted and prodded into almost any type of experience you wish. But it has a decent learning curve and there is much background lore to digest, so players who are not aware of this assume that the game is bad. Witness the poor ratings on this website. Note - download the Ravage mod if you want to experience a single player zombie apocalypse surivival game. Check out the Armaholic website for downloads. Note 2 - there is even a single player version of PUBG where you go up against dozens of AI npcs. Fun if you are an average player like me. !!

A great single player experience, with an atmosphere somehow reminescent of Half Life 2. There are several different ways to cope with the cannibals and great fun to find out what works and doesn't work.

Outward10
Jun 1, 2019
This game has a well thought-out fantasy world with well-functioning mechanics. I have put in about 30 hours of gameplay and experienced only two minor bugs. With my graphics settings (very high with 3.4 Ghz processor, Windows 7, GForce GTX 1050Ti) the game looks and plays beautifully. It is a pleasure to view the landscape as my character jogs around. The combat and magic systems are geared towards thoughtful play and not the faster-than-light play style that others might enjoy. And if a **** file is laid in the Outward_Data folder, then multiple save points and debug console options/cheats become available. Outward is as enjoyable as Skyrim was, though lacking all the Skyrim DLCs, is not as diverse. But on the up-side Outward is ultimately more coherent. Note: death is not final in Outward, and your equipment at the time of death can be eventually recovered after you spawn again.

A good beer and pretzels baseball game but the animations get redundant after awhile. Very nice stats system for a game with such a light-hearted approach. And as with most games of this sort, your own team plays differently from the other teams in the league and the stats reflect this.

Sir, You Are Being Hunted7

The game concept is fresh and original. The graphics are quite fetching and almost a reason in itself to play the game. The game plot is OK. But had a big problem with maintaining situational awareness once combat started. Suddenly the graphics became jerky and my opponents seem to disappear in front of my very eyes as I swung this way and that to locate them. This was quite vexing after awhile as invariably my character would be killed by opponents I suddenly could not see. If the developers would fix this I would still be playing the game.

A FPS on rails. Lacks the freedom of open world shooters like Arma 3. I somehow got the impression that the graphics were very 2-dimensional, that is most objects seemed somehow flat.

Frozen State6

This is an OK survival game. The controls are a little more clumsy than I am used to. Top-down view is not my favorite mode in which to play a game. The inventory system is awkward and slows the game pace down. But the idea of suriviving in the frozen Russian wastes and combating AI humans, supra-humans, subhumans, and the environment itself is an attractive one.
