The Bard's Tale Trilogy Remaster

Good effort at the remaster but the game mechanics didn't age well. The combat is very repetitive, grindy and shallow by today's standards The exploration is rather simplistic and boring. Gameplay doesn't stand on the level of modern RPGs. Only play if you were a fan of the originals.

Endearing and nicely narrated visual novel. Becomes a bit tedious at the end. Pick it up if you are a fan of visual novels but this is not a proper interactive or puzzle solving game.

Very frustrating. This is effectively a stealth game but you can't sneak or walk. You are essentially teleporting and getting stuck in furniture and other scenery all the time, while robots kill you with one shot when they see you.

Good graphics but the game gets extremely boring. The puzzles and things you do are very uninspired. Most of them are like - fetch 3 items to progress. The dialogs are really dry. Plus there's weird political messaging, not sure for what purpose.

Great art style. So so controls. Combat is on the difficult side and you can't save very often at all. So it all becomes very frustrating very very quickly. But if you are used to other Metrodivanias, or whatever they are called, you might enjoy it.

Tried to play it solo and gave up. No Quicksave and Checkpoints are far apart, so if you mess up, especially because your character gets stuck in the scenery or due to poor stealth mechanics, you loose a LOT of progress. Lots of mechanics and controls, most more clunky then interesting. Poor fighting and shooting mechanics. Story - so so

An Australian space cop (who, you guessed it, likes surfing and Sheilas) is chasing, you guessed it, evil Russians.... in space... Developers, you need to try harder....., 'mate'! Still, the game has a few redeemable qualities and the plot is interesting apart from the above cliches. It's non linear and decisions do matter. The biggest problem is the inventory system and how it's used in the game. Its clunkiness and lack of response. You often know what exactly you want and need to do but spend 15-20 mins trying to figure out of how exactly the game wants you to do it via the system. Some puzzles are logical but tedious and boring. The Australian accent in a space setting is not very 'atmospheric' but kudos for using local talent.

Not horrible but there are much better games out there. Slow start, becomes somewhat interesting in the middle but then the last half is a real drag. Same recycled environments, same filler fights, story not very interesting or engaging. Can safely skip this one.

It's OK, I guess. It's a lacklustre version of Dragon Age: Origins without the epic story or interesting companion dynamics. The game mechanics (taken from a table-top game) are overly complicated and 'alien' to most other RPGs. Plus they are poorly explained and sometimes not properly translated. But they kind of work. All of it would be not too bad if the gameplay was interesting. It is NOT! You will realise that after killing your 50th wolf or wolf-rat. And after tediously running around back and forth on empty maps for a few hours. There are so much better games you should be playing instead!

Start out well. Interesting premise. Gameplay is clunky and gets tedious as others have said. Plot has some interesting moments and twists. Ending gets messy and is not really fulfilling. - 1 point for not working under my old graphics drivers and not telling me why.

The Bard's Tale IV: Director's Cut

I was a backer but waited to play the Director’s Cut version. The good: - they tried to make the first few locations feel alive - Combat mechanics are good and deep - They invested into some good music (even if some of it is not 100% to my liking) - Good character level progression and builds The bad: - Poorly optimised performance clog - Game breaking save bugs, crashes, even in the Directors Cut version - Save system is overly complicated and worst of all, often doesn’t work, losing saves and having to retrace your progress - Quits without saving every time computer goes to sleep - story is meh and incoherent, clearly not the focus - Characters are meh - Dialogues are awful and cringey, some feel like they’re written by a 10 year old for other 10 year olds - Character models are meh - Inventory is bad - Gear puzzles are annoying not because they are difficult but because it’s really hard to click on the correct gear via the UI - Other puzzles are nothing to get excited about - Combat music is same same and gets annoying - Combat animations are long and annoying when you are seeing them for a hundredth time - Talking mouths are annoying as you can’t hear them clearly half the time - Some weapon puzzles are not solvable on lower detail settings - Dungeons scenery is not very coherent - lots of same looking recycled statues for whatever reason and can you never distinguish secret buttons - Weird difficulty spikes, often you’ll progress a level just fine and then meet a totally overpowering mob realising you need to go back and level up before you can continue here - A lot of enemies are just placed in locations without any discernible purpose other than for you to fight them - why does every dungeon have same goblins and acolytes?!? What are they doing there? Overall you’ll be completing the game because of your character level progression and somewhat interesting combat and be annoyed with everything else. After struggling for awhile you’ll start asking: is there a purpose to all of this?!? Am I enjoying this??? And realise that there are a lot better games you could be playing.

Got bored. Just play the first game. It's much better. It seems everything from the first game is reused but is made less dramatic, more mundane and more tedious. The scenery or the music does not impress any more and I could not bother trying to connect with the unengaging story.

Generally good mechanics but, as other people have correctly said, throwing is not implemented properly. It breaks the whole experience and impedes progression. The whole game becomes an increasingly frustrating experience. To progress you need to throw and it just doesn't work. I've tried many ways, placing camera at the bottom, at the top, tried to do it in different ways with no avail. Gave up at the end... A pity...
