Taken

'Taken' is a very basic action/thriller, centering on a man doing whatever it takes to get his kidnapped daughter back. The man is played by Liam Neeson, however, which means trouble for the guys that took his daughter. There is a lot of hand-to-hand combat in the film, and it's exhilarating to watch as Neeson takes out multiple people in a matter of seconds with quick shots and the feel of impact as people are punched and kicked. There really isn't much reason to see the film for other than Neeson's strong performance and the butt kicking action scenes. With that being said, the film is well made and entertaining throughout it's brisk 93 minute running time.

I really do not see why a lot of people like this movie so much. While it has some cool battle sequences and good special effects, the film feels slow and not as exciting as it could have been. One big issue I had with the film was the constant use of slow motion. It feels way too overused here and it takes away what could have made the action scenes more thrilling. The CGI blood looks pretty fake, but for the most part, it's a visually appealing film. The film also feels empty, narrative wise. Then again, the film gets its praise from so much people because of the battle sequences, not from story or characters. I must admit that Leonidas is a pretty cool character, well acted by Gerald Butler. The film is just ok to me.

'J. Edgar' sadly isn't the great Clint Eastwood film that I or anyone else was expecting. The film, for me, suffered from not having a plot that moved forward. Instead, the film is told through flashbacks and we go from old Hoover to your Hoover several times. With that main gripe aside, the film itself IS good. It's superbly acted by DiCaprio, well directed by Eastwood, and never has a dull moment.

In all honesty, I was actually enjoying 'Grown Ups' as I was watching it. About an hour in however, I started thinking things over. There really isn't anything memorable about this comedy. There are a couple of decent jokes in the film and I'll admit that I actually laughed a couple of times, but when it hit the hour mark, the film reaches that point where it tries having some heart, which is a generic and typical move that I've seen been done in far too many comedies of this caliber.

The most that I can say about 'Book of Eli' is that Denzel Washington gives a solid performance and the apocalyptic setting is very convincing. Everything else is meh. My biggest problem with the film had to do with it's pacing. It takes way too long to establish the main conflict of the film, which basically centers on Denzel being hunted by Gary Oldman because he carries the last known Bible in existence. It takes nearly an hour just to get to the conflict and the film runs just under 2 hours. If the pacing was sped up a little bit, my feelings toward the film could have been a bit stronger than they already are. Not bad by any means, but the slowness of everything keeps it from being great.

Eh, it's really not the same with Kate Beckinsale. Heist movies shouldn't require absolute brilliance to be good, but they should at least have a brain in their head. 'Takers' is sadly not a smart heist movie. Now, you CAN have fun with a dumb movie, but there's really not much fun to be had with 'Takers'. It takes itself so seriously, but comes off as unintentionally hilarious at times thanks to some weird choices of music in scenes that are supposed to come off as dramatic. Rappers and R&B singer also do not make for good actors in a film of this type. Period.

I was super excited to see 'Cowboys & Aliens'. I never read the comic book that the film was based on, but I absolutely loved the concept of cowboys duking it out with aliens. The fact that the director of 'Iron Man' was behind the director's chair also had me psyched. While I certainly got a solid movie out of it, I was expecting more. The film never is as fun as you might expect, and that probably has to do with how serious the film is in tone. Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig are great, the special effects are pretty good, and the blending of western and science fiction elements is done well. If the film let itself loose and didn't take itself as serious as it did, it could have been a lot more fun. With that being said, it's a fine film overall.

If you're not a Sean Penn fan, then do yourself a favor and please watch this film. He is just phenomenal here and you don't think of the character as someone that Sean Penn is playing, but you think of the character as the actual person that Penn is portraying. When an actor can do pull off such a thing, you know it's a great performance. Inspiring and surprisingly emotional, 'Milk' is a must see for fans of biopics and Sean Penn.

Great action scenes and special effects aside, it actually has a solid story and even more interesting characters. Will Smith steals the show here, no surprise there. Where the 2004 'Punisher' movie was more focused on a revenge-fueled story rather than blood-fueled carnage, 'Punisher: War Zone' flips the table completely. While there is a story to be found in here, this sequel undoubtedly works more as an action film than it's predecessor. I didn't find it as good as the first film, but I did enjoy it nonetheless. The action and violence may turn some off, but I was enjoying myself as The Punisher was blowing people to bits and destroying faces with the might of his fist.

Super 8 feels like a bit of a mixed bag. While it's never boring, most of it isn't as interesting as it should have been. The scenes involving the monster are well crafted and tense, while the scenes involving the human characters never really soar that much. All of the performances are fine, but it would have been nice if the film focused more on the dilemma that the small town is going through rather than the small dilemmas that the kids were going through. It's a fine movie, but not as good as I expected.

While a decent heist thriller, 'The Town' sadly isn't much more than that. When the film is concentrated on anything besides the love story between Ben Affleck and Rebecca Hall, it's pretty interesting. Sadly, the love story is anything but interesting. Most will disagree, but I found the romance to be dull and lifeless. There's a 2 and half hour extended cut of the film that, to me, only makes matters worse by extending the romance. I wanted to like the film more and hopefully get past that main gripe, but I just couldn't. Jeremy Renner steals the show here, although I really did not find his performance to be great enough to be an Oscar contender. I think. As you can tell, I find 'The Town' to be over-rated, but that doesn't mean I didn't like it, it just means that I found nothing special about it. It's good for a single viewing, but I have no real reason to see it again. 7/10 for theatrical version, 6/10 for extended cut.

While the film isn't bad by any means, it just feels so average. When the action happens, it's cool to watch. When the film switches to telling the story, nothing interesting happens. I never really found the losers to be interesting characters, and that **** because what made The A-Team at least watchable were the main characters. I tried watching the film as just a stand alone film, but it didn't even succeed with that. A decent political comedy that features quite a bit of vulgar language and crude/sexual humor, a lot of it ranging from amusing to pretty funny. Will Ferrell and Zach Galifinakis are great to watch on screen and bring a lot of laughs to the table. My major gripe against it is that it starts taking itself a little too seriously in the 3rd act, which makes the film less enjoyable as it was in the first 2 acts. The film is pretty entertaining on the bright side. While not gut bustingly hilarious, it has enough laughs to keep the viewer satisfied.

This is everything you could have ever asked for in an action film: Tons of action stars, lots of explosions, bodies flying everywhere, and lots of one liners. Oh, and don't forget the cheese. Nothing makes an action film more entertaining than making it cheesy and over the top. The Expendables 2, although not art, will entertain any fan of crazy action films. As long as you don't take it TOO seriously, even though I thought the film got a little too serious for its own good in a couple of scenes, you will walk out satisfied. The acting and story are nothing worthy of an Oscar, but the actors and the writers, one of them being Stallone, get the job done. Some may gripe about how the film takes about 40 minutes to go from the 1st action scene to the next, but at least this establishes the actors and the tone that we're settling for in an hour and a half movie. When the action happens, it's great fun to watch, and that's all that should matter in a film like this.

I'm surprised at some of the negativity that this film has received on this site. If the idea of a film centering around a couple and their dramatic dilemmas for 2 hours don't interest you, then you might want to avoid this one. That would be a shame, because you would be missing out on one heck of a dramatic film. Leonardo DiCaprio gives, in my opinion, his absolute best performance and it's a real shame he wasn't nominated for an Academy Award. At least Kate Winslet was, her performance also comes off as riveting and powerful. I have not read the book nor do I read many books that some movies are based off on, but this film kept me engaged throughout regardless if it lives up to its source material.

The majority of the jokes failed to make me even smile while I got insanely bored with the serious side of the film when we're supposed to be seeing Madea, given the title of the movie. I was honestly expecting a lot more from this movie. Hearing that the producers claimed that this installment would be the darkest in tone since the first movie, I got pumped because it was great hearing that this movie wouldn't be go for the comedy route that the 4th movie took. Sadly, I was a little let down. The mediocre-to-bad acting was one thing, but the film had some jokes that I felt were a little forced and thus ruined whatever serious tone the film was going for. However, I must state that the use of 3D was surprisingly effective when I saw it in theaters. The death scenes are classic Final Destination as expected. There's some fun to be had here, but if the film took itself more seriously and perhaps different actors were chose for their roles, this could have been a really fun movie.

Some of the fighting sequences are ok to look at, but when they're over, it's back to the uninteresting story. One thing that I thought was weird was the film's attempt to be stylish at a point or 2.
