Yoshi and the Mysterious Book

So don’t be fooled - whilst this may look like a simple game with simple controls, simple mechanics, simple play style and one for the younger audience, the depth and breadth of the game is impressive with hours and hours of exploration and discovery, all in easily accessible bite-sized chunks. It’s very easy to pick up and play. Though also to put down when an annoying inhabitant of the book won’t quite do what you want them to. But give it a rest and you’ll find yourself coming back soon enough. Overall then? Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is not quite a top-shelf page-turner but it’s definitely one worthy of picking up for a read.

…this though is one of the title’s only shortcomings as otherwise it is a masterpiece. Beautifully presented and minimalist in style, get over the initial hump and this game will challenge you not to enjoy it. Never mind unforgiving. This journey is unforgettable.

This is slapstick Bond. Think Batman the TV series, applied to James Bond the movie. More The Living Daylights Bond than Casino Royale Bond. Everything feels half-baked and undercooked. Hell, I’d rather Gordon Ramsey’s Bond than this! And the story…..corny and cheesy to say the least, with some cringy dialogue sprinkled on top. I can only think the script writers must’ve written the outline and then taken the rest of the time off. Given it to the underpowered AI to finish, for it is poor. Or maybe the AI just gave up also.

Ignore all the boorish nay-sayers! Metroid Prime 4 is amazing and easily accessible for newcomers. Much more so than others in the series.

Amazing game. GotY contender in my humble opinion - ignore some of the lower review scores here. No idea what game they were playing and I guess neither do they! Can check out my IG review here: ****/reel/DRZwqdhDJJo/?igsh=bmgzOGd2M2kzMzI4 ——————————- Sometimes, even when playing a great game, a little bit of boredom can set in. When it all gets a bit samey. When the thrill of the new mechanics wears off. When you’ve seen all the new enemies and level designs. When the plot no longer excites. When you just want to complete the level asap so as to progress the story and move on. When you’re completing a task you’ve done many times before - it may have been fine the first 99 times but that 100th time just feels a bit, meh. It hit me towards the end of playing Cronos: The New Dawn though that I didn’t experience that. Not once. Not at all. And that’s probably the highest praise I can give the game. Yes there were feelings of frustration and annoyance, though not to the limit. Feelings of ‘not again’ when the Unmerged Terror had ripped me to shreds for the 5th or 6th time, but the 7th time was still fun! And I’d learnt a bit more about how to defeat it. So when I did…bam. What a game. Starting off weird and only getting weirder, Bloober Team have taken inspiration from all the usual and unusual suspects - Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Control, Twelve Monkeys, Stranger Things, Gears of War, and then some. Without giving anything away (no spoilers here!), the plot is confounding - mixing time travel, religious cults, pandemics, and alien technology. The start of the game though is perhaps the toughest to get to grips with. But only until you realise you can’t shoot willy-nilly. That you have to ration like mad. That it helps to use the environment. That sometimes run and don’t look back is the best approach! And that peering through your fingers from behind the couch is also acceptable! It’s scary in parts. The monsters yes, especially when you can hear them but can’t see them. But also when your essences jump scare onto the screen and into your vision, for fractions of a second when you least expect it. But the most shocking and terrifyingly scary thing for me is why some reviewers have rated this game so low. If this is not a contender for Game of the Year then I don’t know what is. Fellow Travellers and Collectors - pick this up now. The Terminal is not going to send you back for it. Such is our calling.
