The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword3
Aug 22, 2022
Genuinely an atrocious Zelda game, an embarrassment to the franchise. This game is defined by the word boring. The repeated sections and the uninspired dungeons drag on for the entire experience. For each interesting or compelling moment/enemy encounter there are at least 5 which are boring. And Fi, just the worst!!!!!!! The only positive thing to say about FI is that she made me appreciate tattle more in ocarina of time. Comparing the two would be like comparing the heat of a hot stove vs the sun. The characters here are lifeless (except for groose) your bird companion feels like a glorified vehicle, and your sword won't ever shut up, it's exhausting. Like I said however there are some real highlights here, including the Buddhist inspire ancient cistern and its boss, the pirate ship that switches from the past to the future, and Girahim. But these good ideas don't make up for the pacing and the rest of the problems. Underneath these problems there rests a good game, but **** is more fun to think about and remember then to play that's when there's an issue

Elden Ring10
Aug 21, 2022
Elden Ring might go down as one of the most ambitious games of the decades. Taking the already successful dark souls formula and expanding it to such a large scale was perhaps the riskiest move fromsoft could have attempted, however, it really paid off. Not only is the map about 5 times bigger than anyone imagined, it also is filled with enough content to justify the scale. The combat is taken and slightly refined from the previous fromsoft games, making it smooth and engaging. The bosses in this game rival some of the best from the dark souls 3 and bloodborne dlcs, each with their own unique dynamics and fighting styles. The game starts out so strongly and just continues to improve the farther you get in. There is always something off the beaten path, whether it be a cave or something else, which makes sidetracking and exploring worthwhile. The legacy dungeons as well are finely constructed and flow well with the rest of the open world, providing a nice balance between the two sections. While there are a few complaints to be levied at the game, such as certain bosses being bs or certain sections which just aren't fun, but ultimately these pale in comparison to the quality of the rest of the game. The main problem that I do think is apparent in the game is its lack of replayability. While this isn't a problem for most people since they won't play the game beyond their first time, for those who want to play again they'll likely notice that the game doesn't hold as much magic. This isn't to say it is not great, the legacy dungeons and the bosses are still a lot of fun on repeat runs but the traveling and the side content grows stale the second time around. However, this still in my opinion doesn't take away the fact that fromsoft created perhaps the best open-world game of all time and something which may change the industry for years to come. Elden ring should serve as an example for developers just what they can do if they are passionate about their craft and are dedicated first and foremost to creating an interesting experience for the players

Just dumb fun. There's nothing more to really add just a game that's dumb fun. There's something oddly intriguing about the absurdity of it all.

Halo 46
Aug 21, 2022
Really felt like a departure from the original series. I was never a huge halo fan but even I knew this game didn't feel true to the spirit of the franchise. The game mechanically was decent, the story was decent, and the gameplay sections were decent, ultimately the entire experience felt painfully average. The only thing helping this game is the multiplayer is fun even though it still doesn't feel like traditional halo multiplayer and feels much more washed out.

Assassin's Creed5
Aug 21, 2022
It's a game with some fun mechanics that laid the groundwork for one of the longest-running gaming franchises ever. However, even only 4-5 years after its release the game felt dated. The mechanics feel janky, the locations are repetitive, the story isn't that compelling, and worst of all the content recycles constantly. After you get one-third of the way through you've essentially seen most of what the game has to offer. It was a cool release when it came out but ultimately it pales in comparison to what it inspired.

An immersive story that engages in compelling storytelling and narrative. However, some of the stories of the characters told here are lackluster, and there are moments where boredom sets in and the game becomes somewhat of a drag. Overall it's a strong game with a cool and unique concept but it doesn't always execute its concept to its full potential.

Hollow Knight10
Aug 20, 2022
This may be my favorite game ever. Hollow knight takes the Metroidvania formula and perfects it, with compelling exploration, locations, upgrades, NPCs, progression, and combat. There's not a moment in this game where one feels bored, and the map is structured in such a way that it is unusual to ever get lost. The game has a great sense of progression and ramps up the difficulty in fair ways. The art style also adds a lot of charm to the game, making the world feel alive and making one feel good for staying in it. Theres never moments where the game feels unfair, almost every time you die or get hit you feel that you were at fault. The polish is outstanding for an indie game, I've played this game to death and ran into maybe 1 minor glitch which barely even effected gameplay. It is obvious that a great deal of care was put into this project, and it shows in every little detail. What really shows the developers' love is the free DLCs they put into the game, each adding some substantive addition like bosses or new areas. The boss-run DLC is probably the best of the bunch since they reinvent some of the bosses and add in a few additional ones, the size of the DLC alone most companies would charge in the 20$ range for, meanwhile you get it free with the game which itself only costs around 20$. Each boss, each level, and each design choice felt born from passion to make a great game and by all accounts team cherry succeeded.

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice9
Aug 20, 2022
Sekiro has possibly the most fun combat mechanics out of any game I have ever played. There's not a moment of boredom while fighting enemies or bosses, and every hit feels satisfactory. Since the game is a fromsoft title, it takes a while to get adjusted, but the game does a fantastic job at slowly getting one used to the blocking and dodging mechanics. The movement system also combines seamlessly with the rest of the gameplay. The locations are interesting to explore and there are enough set pieces here to emphasize the beauty of the world they created. The bosses in this game too are easily the most consistently great in any game I've ever played. The fighting mechanics allow for interesting and challenging fights which really shine brightest with the final fight. A substantial issue I have however is that there are a decent amount of repeat fights here. almost half the bosses and mini-bosses one fights are repeats with some alterations. Now, while the alterations often do change enough to make the second fights compelling, it still feels odd that in a game this polished there also exists a stunning lack of diversity. But, the high points of this game heavily outweigh the negatives and overall one likely wont be too concerned with the lack of diversity of fights while playing due to the fluid and great feeling gameplay that surrounds it.

Bloodborne9
Aug 20, 2022
Bloodborne is a game with an uncompromising dark aesthetic style coupled with an interesting modification to the usual fromsoft combat system. It doesn't make sense how this game was released just one year after dark souls 2 and yet feels and looks better in almost every way imaginable. The enemies and bosses are perfectly tuned to fit with the new aggressive gameplay, and the level design feels like a return to form. The only real problem I have is that the game's art style starts to feel samey when nearing the end of the game. However, this is really only a minor complaint, and the rest of the game more than makes up for it. The DLCs also introduce some really compelling bosses that both fit with the themes of the game and extend its combat mechanics even further.

Dark Souls III10
Aug 20, 2022
A near-perfect end to a legendary series. This game is an improvement on nearly all accounts from the first and second game and hits back on all the themes presented. It starts out a little slow but quickly ramps up, especially near the end. Almost every boss has incredible polish that blows the first and second game out of the water and holds its own against bloodborne. The pace is much faster, which while making the combat feel different from 1 and 2, also allows for more fluidity and dynamic action. The DLCs follow in the soulsborne tradition in being the best part of the game's experience. While the ashes of Ariendel felt somewhat lackluster (except the sister Friede fight which I think is the best in the series), the Ringed city was easily my favorite DLC experience from any souls game, sporting compelling gameplay sections with groundbreaking bosses, 3 of which (Demon Prince, Midir, and Slave Knight Gael) have legitimate claims to be called best in the series. All in all Dark Souls 3 is the perfect conclusion for a legendary franchise and easily the best the series has to offer.

Dark Souls II: Scholar of the First Sin7
Aug 20, 2022
A pretty good game that suffers from some really strange mechanical and design flaws which drag down what could have been a better game than the original. The game is bloated with bosses with a notable decrease in quality. Level design is near unbearable in certain places and makes the game downright unfun at moments. Even the DLCs are a noticeable decrease in quality compared to the originals, despite them still being some of the better moments of the game. The main thing that keeps dark souls 2 from being a worse game is the fact that it is built on an already sturdy foundation that the original dark laid out.

Dark Souls Remastered8
Aug 20, 2022
A great breakout release by a company that would go on to be one of the most consistent game developers of the modern age. Dark Souls obviously has unparalleled influence and can be credited with creating an entirely new subgenre of videogame. However, the game hasn't aged that well, especially with the release of newer fromsoft games which improve on a multitude of aspects from their older releases, making games like dark souls one feel not up to par. However, despite some of the questionable boss designs and some of the horribly designed areas in the second half of the main game, the experince itself and the highs more than make up it. The added DLC also really helps propel the game in quality. With some of the most interesting bosses and storytelling in any fromsoft game to this day, it really cements this title as iconic.

Little Nightmares: Complete Edition9

A very unique horror game that throws one into an immersive and unsettling world filled with unique monsters and set pieces. The aesthetics of this game really sells it and the creepiness and vagueness of the Maw which adds to this games impressive immersion. A fantastic game that anyone should pick up and try.

This game is a great successor to its creepy and intense predecessor. the dynamic between Mono and six adds an interesting gameplay and narrative change while not foregoing the horror elements. the atmosphere and set pieces are top-notch and in some ways improves on the first one. Overall a great horror game.
