Subnautica: Below Zero3
May 18, 2021
It simply is a toned down, much less dangerous sequel that lacks the immersion of the first. Don't give us base building, then give us zero reason to build them. Especially with awesome quality of life additions like the jukebox. Also, as many have noted, the vehicular changes remove yet another layer of gameplay that is beloved by fans of the first. Everything is easy to achieve in this sequel and I often found myself needing little protection from most dangers. If this is the future of this franchise, then count me out. (Subnautica original is one of my favorite games of all time, bugs and all.)

Sid Meier's Civilization VI: Gathering Storm0

Played the civ series since the first and it's been my primary gaming most of my life. I've loved every iteration of the series, even the struggling 5 which was quite possibly the worse launch of all of them. However, after giving 6 so much time and waiting for this final expansion and it's large summer update, i have to finally give a review. First, this clearly had ipad in mind for it's design. Stick a fork in it from that point on. The AI simply cannot play the game. It's utterly broke. 4 is so much better than this. It's like a lot of gaming now, rush to mobile market. Get that ipad money. Well, I'm reminded of that movie Idiocracy. Our new generations have no idea what they are missing concerning immersion and depth in gaming. But that's the point i suppose. They have no idea....

Guild Wars 26

Definitely a game for younger gamers. From cartoony Pokemon type graphics, to childish voice emotes when leveling up or performing certain skills, this is a large departure from the original guild wars games. That said, the game is extremely polished, and very well made. As an adult, I can't possibly become interested in this type of game. However, I absolutely appreciate the excellent job they did in creating a fast paced, all encompassing game for younger and casual players. Would not recommend it as a serious game however for veterans of mmorpgs, or those seeking a mature game.

This game is amazing. At launch it was a mess, and not ready for PC. I was given a refund by Zenimax my first week without a problem. I was invited to check the game out again over a year later, and I certainly did. I bought the game and am now a plus member. It's my favorite mmorpg on the market right now hands down. It's not perfect, but it's getting there.

I'm hooked. It's theme park elements introduce the sandbox elements as well as intended. Crafting is big and purposeful. The world is immersive, dangerous, and beautiful.

If not for the unfortunate amount of bugs, this game would be getting a much higher score. The PVE is interesting, and while following the same grammar of other mmorpgs they manage to create an engaging world and story line that seems fresh. The graphics are without any argument the best in the business, but again the immersion can sometimes be broken by clunky movement and those pesky launch bugs. Combat in this game is exciting, and moves the genre forward not only through versatile, dynamic builds, but also by implementing dodge and aim as opposed to basic tab targeting/macro mashing. The use of instances and similar zone hubs is disappointing, but the sheer size of each zone gives creedence to exploring. The guild stores are interesting compared to the standard AH, and being able to join up to 5 guilds ensures finding a speedy way to buy and sell; I would like the functionality to be more streamlined and easier to use, but hopefully as with Rift, these improvements will be implemented easily within the first year. To sum up, this game has some great mechanics behind it, good pvp, good crafting, good community, and beautiful world. The rocky launch remains unfortunate but the game is enjoyable despite. This might be the most grown up, mature mmorpg to date, and while not groundbreaking, it manages to revive a feeling of freshness to an increasingly stale, over-saturated market.

Tempest Bay is an amazing city. Dimensions are incredible. I was surprised by how many items are available and how versatile the system is. This is the best themepark mmorpg out there.

I am rooting for any mmorpg that takes immersion seriously, but as of now do not believe story alone can accomplish this. The frequent instancing creates a ghost town feeling. The pasted on, wallpaper backgrounds in each zone do not allow for players to interact with the environment as freely as in many other mmorpgs. To me, each zone feels exactly the same as the last, turning left and right through a tunnel/dungeon environment with different backgrounds. Although the story is fun, and does create the sense of being in a movie, the initial excitement for me wore off mid-level, leaving a real feeling of claustrophobia. Compared to Dragon's Nest and Vindictus this game can be called an mmorpg. But compared to those games already established in the genre SWTOR rates low as an mmorpg specifically due to the lack of an open, persistent world.
