Tip Toe practically stomps in, boldly calling for history to not repeat itself. Davies has done it again, creating another landmark show that captures the queer zeitgeist.

Tip Toe is one of the most unsettling TV shows of the 21st century — and you absolutely must watch it.

It’s a show that brilliantly, humorously and heartbreakingly acknowledges just how much harm queer people are experiencing in the age of disinformation.

It still lacks the discipline that made his other state of the historical/future nation pieces, Years and Years or It’s a Sin, so powerful and moving, but the strands begin to interweave, momentum builds and if the extremity of the conclusion still doesn’t quite ring true, everyone has worked hard to get it as close to authentic and emotionally credible as possible.

Morrissey is terrific and terrifying across these five episodes, but Cumming is the star, a charismatic, complicated and subtly sad figure who transcends the broadness of Tip Toe’s plot.

A drama that takes wrong turns but is never less than bold and, in the round, deeply stirring. TV polemic is back, loud and proud.

We know where this is going and at times it feels as subtle as a brick in the face. But when Davies steps down from his pulpit and lets his characters breathe, his storytelling is visionary, devastating, passionate and humane.

It’s not perfect television, by any stretch, but, goodness, does Tip Toe have something to say.

Occasionally lapses into speechifying; it’s a show with something to say, and it makes sure you get the point. But both of the main characters are carefully written and acted with fierce intelligence.
