Them is a horror show, through and through. But while the violence is challenging, it’s not necessarily exploitative in its treatment.

What marks out this portrayal of 50s prejudice (not unworked ground) is that, thanks to magnificent performances from Thomas and Ayorinde, you get a great sense of the cost to victims: the sheer amount of mental energy it takes to navigate a relentlessly hostile world, the consequent exhaustion, the constant abrading of the soul. If the series has a weakness as a horror story, it’s that the supernatural stuff is really a bagatelle.

The series was a great story of real life migration for black americans with a twist of Horror that relly touches black american viewers. Most of the negative reviews are purely because it touched an emotional trigger with black americans that feel the idea of 'black trauma porn' is offensive to them and dont wantto experience watching lback people murdered anymore. I can totally undestand BUT as a black man myself I want non viewers to see themselves in this light. To see the trauma that actually existed. This is different from most movies that just kill black people with no regard. There is true context in this story of why we as black Americans cant just accept America, because in it's total history it never really accepted us. It pulled an emotional response out of many of it's viewers and that alone should be a tell sign that it actually did a good job at telling the story and being a TRUE horror story for black Americans and a cautionary tale for white Americans to how we got here.

The show is horrifying. The cast shines like the sun on an already perfect world. The story is clear and makes sense. The racism is horrifying the ghosts are also horrifying. The show is plain win for the horror genre. I don’t know if I have been this effected by a show of film for a while.

Some people are going to love "Them" and some may be content to acknowledge its visceral potency while desiring to never watch it again. It may traumatize, and that doesn't make it bad or unworthy of your attention. Think of it as a provocation. Then decide if you have the stomach to be provoked, yet again.

Them: Covenant, on the other hand, has a lot of promising things going for it, including strong lead performances and unnerving atmosphere in every scene. But it’s hard not to notice that the show spends 10 episodes dragging out a nearly identical story to what Lovecraft efficiently told in one. And after a while, the new show’s individual strengths crumble under the weight of its sheer size.

This is another rehashing of broad Black Lives Matter statements that are unsuccessfully contorted to try to fit into a genre piece. As a result, both the horror aspect and the sociopolitical commentary are shortchanged. There's no sense of mystery, no intrigue that keeps you guessing until the final credits.

Them primarily feels empty during the first half of its run. But episode five, “Covenant I” — which is, notably, directed by the show’s only Black director, Zola’s Janicza Bravo — turns the show from a grating, hollow depiction of Blackness in America to one that revels in degrading its Black characters in a way that left me questioning both the Black creators involved and the studio system that is eager for this kind of work.

It’s amazing but not surprising of the negative reviews like any other reviews, status, award, or any accomplishment controlled by white audience and white platforms. So many black movies and black actors never get their flowers and as showcased in this series, no matter where you live, go, or what class or stature you carry as a black person, you are not invited, accepted, or seen as equals in this nation, even today! This show is epic in so many ways that it gives a mental, physical, spiritual, out of body, and supernatural approach to the reality of black people! The acting, theme, story, realness plot, and attempt to give an authentic and surreal experience will miss the mark for the obvious to the same people the serious is TRULY ABOUT! THEM!

I thought the acting, cinematography, production design were all top notch and so I'll give a few positive stars for that. But as for the show itself I went into it thinking it was going to be sort of a twilight zone/horror show. But what disappointed me was it just seemed like a big corporation (Amazon) trying to exploit a terrible and tragic situation in the the US for profit for what they think is would sell right now. Racism should be the topic of serious discussion not for ratings and selling advertising space for Amazon Prime memberships.
