The Netflix series not only takes a dark turn in terms of story but also in style, with life-threatening fights, a lot of gun action, and more. The new season feels like the show has evolved in the years it was away, and the result is what I believe to be one of the best seasons for any show on Netflix.

The Chestnut Man has an intriguing mystery and strong lead characters. It’s a prime example of why Scandi noir is such a popular genre.

It took a while to get to the point of the investigation, as the episode meandered between Hartung’s first day back at work and Naia’s and Mark’s wildly contrasting home lives instead of focusing on the case. It was all the better for it, though, with every scene building suspense or adding rich context to what promises to be a gruesome and engrossing series.

The Chestnut Man: Hide And Seek is as creepy as the original season of The Chestnut Man, with the case at hand enhanced by the now-established personal and professional relationship between Naia and Mark.

At the end of the day, “The Chestnut Man: Hide and Seek” isn’t exactly a series that’s reinventing the wheel in the world of crime dramas. But, in many ways, its formulaic nature is part of its appeal, and its solid execution makes for an enjoyable enough ride.
