Despite the predictable conclusion, "Stargate SG-1," leaves many character threads dangling tantalizingly. If you aren't careful, this series could definitely hook you. [27 Jul 1997]

The two-hour premiere is sort of fun, but the plot is nutty even by sci-fi standards.

My go-to, must-have favorite show of nearly all time! I can't count the number of times I have watches and rewatched this whole series!

Stargate SG-1 is a classic among sci-fi circles. Ignore the critic reviews, most of them very clearly have not watched the show. The show does take a pretty dramatic drop towards the very very end (season 9 and 10) when the Ori arc begins, this is because sadly O'Niell was getting old and clearly he couldn't film as much and General Hammond's actor passed away rest his soul. O'Niell and Hammond were (mostly) replaced and a new enemy appeared in the galaxy and its just not quite as good. There are still some great episodes sprinkled in there, but nothing really lives up to the original SG-1 members: Tealc, Carter, Daniel, and O'Niell with Hammond running Stargate Command. That is peak sci-fi. If you are a fan of episodic sci-fi shows like Star Trek you will like this show. Don't get me wrong, it had its issues, and this was due to circumstances when it was made. They often were not aware if they were going to get renewed for the next season after the original 5 season run on Showtime so the showrunners and writers didn't know whether to wrap up an arc or end on a cliffhanger. Especially when Daniel's actor had to leave, there was some very good episodes surrounding that but it was jarring . From there you get used to Jonas who comes in and fills the spot of the archaeologist/ethnolinguist in SG-1, and he actually does a fantastic job in my opinion. But at the time fans wanted Daniel back, and the actor returns and its just a little unusual because I don't think they had time to plan some directions they had to take. Bottom line though SG-1 was fantastic with both Daniel Jackson and Jonas Quinn. Overall this is a great show, it really is. And Furthermore Atlantis isn't too bad either honestly, but its nowhere near the original SG-1 crew, and if you stick with this show (like all great episodic sci-fi shows it takes a season or so to really find its footing) I promise you will appreciate it. Star Trek (TNG, Deep Space Nine, and yes Voyager too) and Stargate SG-1 are foundational sci-fi shows and if you appreciate the classic single or double episode storylines of a crew of people exploring the galaxy and all of the politics and interactions that come along with it then you will love this show. Just avoid any of the new stuff for either (Stargate Universe, Star Trek Discovery, Picard) because writers now days can't for the life of them write sci-fi without it becoming the most generic CGI "save the galaxy" Star Wars style action flick. Experienced sci-fi people will eventually get to those and watch them, and they have some good points here and there in those shows, but for the most part they are just Hollywood slop ruining good characters and ideas from the past to satiate their need to "modernize" the IP. Just absolute slop from writers that don't understand sci-fi, they hold disdain for the fanbases of these IPs, and they seek to self insert themselves and deliver nonsense narratives that are just so annoying and exhausting. Mix in a push by the studios that want to have their own Star Wars franchise so they can sell merchandise and you just end up with garbage television. If you want a serialized narrative watch Battlestar Galactica or The Expanse.

Stargate SG-1 is mainstream sci-fi television of the no-brainer genre. Light on intellectual depth and heavy on action, it seems destined to play toward a younger age group than the Star Trek and Babylon 5 sort of science fiction shows. [24 Jul 1997]

"SG-1" is a passable action series on a par with most syndicated sci-fi fare. Its only real distinguishing feature is [a] ludicrous, completely gratuitous nude scene. [26 Jul 1997]

The TV pilot, like the theatrical film, is long on hardware and gunplay and short on logic. [24 Jul 1997]

Anyone with fond memories of [the] film should avoid "Stargate SG-1," Showtime's oddly enervated series version. ... "Stargate SG-1" will be a treat only for those who love science fiction most when it's done badly. [26 Jul 1997]

Pedestrian writing, pulp-mag plotting, shopworn characters, hackneyed dialogue ('with all due respect' pops up at least three times in the first hour) and Mario Azzopardi’s broad direction will all undoubtedly delight billions and billions.

Second favorite show of all time behind MASH. This show was amazing until Jack left. As soon as Jack (RDA) left, it just lost its way.

Why is MacGuyver traveling the woods of North America? I keep expecting him to make a gun out of a stick and a pack of gum.
